IBM (NYSE:IBM) and RIM (NSDQ:RIMM) plan to make Lotus collaboration apps available for BlackBerry Smartphones, which IBM Lotus and Research In Motion announced on Monday at Lotusphere. The new capabilities are to be launched at different dates throughout the year.
RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie was talking at a press conference at Lotusphere, where he said that both companies are taking a quantum jump when it comes to combining mobile communications with multimedia software, something that I am sure that BlackBerry users will welcome.
BlackBerry users will have access to documents produced using the Lotus Symphony personal productivity applications, this will be made available by the second quarter of 2009. Support for spreadsheets and presentations will be made available at a later date. BlackBerry client for the Lotus Connections social networking application will be coming later in 2009, this will give BlackBerry owners access to activities, blogs and communities.
