Killzone 2: Should Sony PS3 developers change expectations

We are only a month away from the release of Killzone 2 in the U.S and there is no denying that the game is producing a huge amount of buzz on the Internet. It is hoped that Killzone 2 will finally be able to show the true potential of the Sony PS3, which will then raise the question “Should Sony PS3 developers change expectations.”
There is no denying that the Sony PlayStation 3 is a truly powerful system, but none of the games available has been able to set it apart from the Xbox 360 in gameplay. We did get a tease with Metal Gear Solid 4, but it still did not show the true power of the PS3.
Hopefully Killzone 2 will be able to change all that, the game has now raised the bar in the graphical and physical design of the game. Other developers will be able to see what Guerrila Games have done, and will aim to do the same, if not better.

Competition (and lazyness) is the fuel for innovation. Along with money and greed.
So the answer to your question is “yes”. Developers will be able to see what really is capable and attempt to mimic this.
I’m a long time Xbox 360 owner and bought a PS3 two weeks ago because of Killzone 2. While I have little doubt that Killzone 2 will set the new bar for shooters and videogames in general, the sales will be the ultimate factor in convincing other PS3 developers to put as much time and effort into their games as Guerilla did with Killzone 2. There is absolutely no excuse for Killzone 2 to not match the sales of Gears of War 2. In order for Killzone 2 to be viewed as a success, it absolutely must sell AT LEAST one million copies on day one. Killzone is an older franchise than Gears of War and should already have a larger install base off the bat than the original Gears of War. Sony must do EVERYTHING it possibly can to market Killzone 2 and hype it. The two or three reviews that have been leaked indicate that Killzone 2 is the real deal. Sony must put its best efforts behind this game. If Killzone 2’s sales don’t reach the 2 million mark within the first couple of weeks it could almost be deemed as a flop, and developers will have no reason to work so hard for a console that can’t sell millions of its flagship title.
studios are greedy now,its all about the money.unless the ps3 gets a price cut and boosts install base then devs will still make multi plat games.if studios made games to push the bar then the 360 and wii wouldn`t be touched.shame its all about money cause they could make amazing games just for high end pc n ps3 n just make less profits but the games would be better.
P.S. I think it’s a huge marketing mistake for Sony to release a demo of Killzone 2 before its release, or ever, period. As a gamer I can’t wait to try the demo but from a sales perspective I think Sony will lose sales that will be generated out of pure curiosity and by the mystique of what is supposed to be the best-looking, most technically advanced shooter on the market that’s going to show off what the PS3 is truly made of. A lot of PS3 owners who aren’t real fans of Killzone or the genre will be willing to spend $60 just to get a taste of Killzone 2, for the same reason that a large portion of PS3 owners bought the PS3- for bragging rights that they own the bleeding-edge product, even if they don’t particularly care for it. I think part of Gears of War’s success is due to its mystique. Epic released tons of gameplay footage that looked amazing and people just wanted their hands on the game, and the only way they could do that is by buying it.
Killzone 2 has been over 4 years in development, with huge amounts of resources behind it. Hence it should raise the bar for consoles FPSs for that reason alone.
Of course, setting the bar higher gives others something to aim towards, but let’s not get carried away by implying other devs are lazy for not reaching that bar, because that’s unfair and unjustified, or assume that it sets the PS3 apart from the 360 in terms of power (since both consoles are similar in this respect).
That said, I do look forward to the release of Killzone 2.
I really was not trying at all to call developers lazy. Some have not taken the time fully learn what the PS3 is capable and it’s hard to blame them. They have a business to run so they have to release the game before it is fully optimized.
If you have a enough time and money, you can get an awesome game. This what Guerilla was able to do. Sony was backing this game.
I don’t think that it will sell 1Million the first day but It should definitely sell that much in a month, at least. A lot of people are into this game. I know three people at work that are going to get it.
I am going to buy day one, but I might play until a few weeks later. i am working on my 10K for R2.
Give any game that budget, sliding deadline, resources and support from the platform holder and it will look as good.
Developers are NOT lazy, they are pushed for resources. Not every game can be Killzone 2 in regards to graphics or scope.

“Killzone 2 is only about a month away from launch here in the U.S. and has already made an enormous amount of buzz around the internet. People cannot wait to get their hands on the game that is supposed to finally show the true power of the PS3. With this new found power that Guerrila Games has managed to grasp from the system, I ask developers: Is it time to change your expectations of the PS3?
We all knew the system was powerful, but nothing truely set it apart from the XBOX 360 as for gameplay it self. We had a mere glimpse at the power with MGS4 but it still never made the PS3 a more powerful system. Now with Killzone 2, things may begin to change. They have managed to raise the bar on the graphical and physical design of a game developed for the PS3. Developers will begin to see what Guerrila has managed to achieve and will strive to do just the same if not better. As we move into 2009 will we finally begin to see a difference between the 360 and PS3? Or is Killzone one of its kind?”
when i try to add my m8 in game in call duty worl at war on ps3, i get message saying my playlist is more updated than theirs, i wont be able to play them till they update their playlist, do u have ne idea how he updates this?
From your comments….”Other developers will be able to see what Guerrila Games have done, and will aim to do the same, if not better.
”
After more than 4 years in development and over $100 million spent, it should be obvious what the real trend in PS3 titles has become. Sony, which owns guerilla, will spend and lose tons of money for games in the hope of justifying their expensive Blu-Ray/Cell Trojan horse. Other game developers need to make money on the games they produce, so everyone will get more of the same glitchy, sub-360 versions of titles released on both consoles.
PS3 is slowly killing the greatest brand in gaming history, and taking Sony down with it. Sony needs to throw in the towel and launch PS4 ASAP!
