
China Mobile to invest $8.6 billion for 3G development
By: Peter Chubb | January 14, 2009 | Leave a CommentChina’s top telecom operator, China Mobile has announced plans to invest 58.8 billion yuan ($8.6 billion) this year for 3G development. The telecommunications company was recently given a license to develop TD-SCDMA standard for 3G.
China Mobile will use the money to build around 60,000 base stations, which will cover 238 cities. Currently the company only operates 20,000 base stations, which are used to connect calls between cell phones across China.
China Mobile said that spending the money on the launch of 3G is important in the efforts of battling the current global slowdown. China has the biggest mobile market, in November they had over 634 subscribers
