COD6 Cross Platform Skirmishes: Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

COD6 Cross Platform Skirmishes: Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

By: Daniel Chubb | January 12, 2009 | 20 Comments

It’s not a new idea to connect the games console world with the PC gamers, Microsoft united Xbox 360 and PC gamers with “Games for Windows and LIVE”. It was great to see Xbox LIVE extended to Windows Vista, but this was all under one brand, Microsoft.

We would love to see Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (aka COD6) include many new features, these include different weapons and even a hostage game but what about playing gamers on other systems.

COD6 could be the first game that would pioneer cross platform skirmishes (Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and PC). Do developers already know how to do this and just not telling us?

Is cross platform gaming with the Xbox 360 and PS3 especially a reality or will this option be buried in red tape forever? Let us know your views below.

I’m unsure if a xbox 360 vs Ps3 option would ever be a reality given that MS would need to give access to xbox live and vice versa with PS3′s network. It aint going to happen. But can see 360 users playing against pc users as thats already been done with game like Shadowrun.

would be quality, have some proper good banter but could never see it happen..

  • Forget it

This is never going to work. It’s been tried and neither side really wants it anyway. The PC gamers don’t want easy targets and console noobs running around and the console gamers don’t want to get owned by users with a mouse. Plus the manufacturers and developers can sell more product by keeping them separated. I think this is a dead subject really. Must be a slow news day.

I can see xbox live and games for windows live offering cross platform play in the near future, but sony and microsoft are too big of rivals to work something out between the 360 and the ps3.

I have been searching for information regarding online gaming on the PS3. In particular, I am interested in learning about the architecture of online multiplayer games for the PS3. Does anyone know any good sources?

I have had similar questions about cross platform skirmishes, which is why I am investigating this issue. It seems to me that you would need to understand the architecture before you can say if this is a possibility or not. It might even be up to the guys coding the game to make this happen, not really sure.

I don’t see why Microsoft or Sony would care if a game is cross-platform. It will not hurt their sales, if anything it would help game sales. I would rather play a game that has a larger pool of people to play with. Also the idea that sales are increased by keeping systems incompatible is ridiculous. I own a 360 and a PS3 and I only buy one copy of a game. If cross platform gaming was a possibility then I still would buy only one copy. You would still need to buy two if you wanted to play on both systems. I don’t see why Sony and Microsoft wouldn’t want this to happen.

  • What About Lan

It may be difficult to ever get XBox Live to work with the PS network, but it should be quite possible to allow LAN party play between 360 and PS3. Although this is not as popular among many, some of us still prefer this over online play. More copies of a game could be sold because more machines could play against each other.
Games that allow LAN and split screen and both together are the ones I enjoy the most and I look for those features in purchasing.

There is some home, for instance, FFXI is played on the same servers for both US/JP/EU as well as PS2/XBOX360/PC. Completely cross-platform. Can it be done, yes! Has it been done, yes! Of course this is on company specific servers with a P2P setup.

This is already planned for EVE online. They will be linked to the future game dust## which will be played on a system.

  • oX_Requim_Xo

It can happen because all they have to do is use the same servers and that wouldnt pose to be to much of a problem all they would have to do is change around a few codes and we’d be good to go on the cross platforming

I can’t wait to start ownin xbox and ps3 users to let them know that consoles are nothin but kiddy bullshit and for people that can’t use their brain.

Someone a little full of themselves

There will be never such a thing between a console and a pc if we are talking about FPS Games. The Console Guys would always loose in aiming and ask themselves why they bought a more expensive console game, just to get beaten up ;-)

  • WiseGamer

It’s possible that a PS3 and 360 game could go cross-platform. However, an FPS game cross-platform with a PC would be completely unfair. Computer gaming is much more precise, the console gamers would be absolutely destroyed.

I remember playing Quake 3 Arena between Dreamcast and PC. I also remember kicking as much ass on that Dreamcast as I did with the PC. Of course I was using the Dreamcast mouse/keyboard. Why wouldn't you be able to play the console version with the same setup?

Saying it would never happen is just being close-minded. It already has happened. I think it would be great to be able to play in the same community regardless of which system you own. Give all the systems the same options and implement the same anti-cheating system to govern it.

Who knows, it might be the best thing to happen to online gaming.

actually i think ive seen a keyboard/mouse-type setup for ps3 somewhere & i usually use a controller with pc games anyways…& it would be awesome if they added cross-platform support for ps3, 360 & pc, even if it was just by adding it to playstation plus & getting more ppl to get it or like a platinum account thing for 360 users…& they could do it in the form of adding a new option like split-screen, LAN, PSN/XBL, & one for cross-platform, then ppl on consoles could get a keyboard/mouse setup for 360 or ps3 or sony & microsoft could create it if they havent & get more from that & if pc users just wanted to be full of themselves & just play other pc users (im not really pro-platform, but i hate when ppl think one is better than the others for no decent reason at all) they could just not select the cross-platform option

then sony or microsoft would really lose money cuz ppl could just buy the platform that suited them…

    …just some thoughts lol :)

  • ice_man765

i think it would be a great idea but it would make the server slow probably unless they upgraded it, but it would be cool to make it where you could choose pc vs ps3 or ps3 vs xbox or xbox vs ps3 i could see this happening

  • Baldisar

and would also allow people like my brother and myself as well as some friends of ours to play games against one another via LAN, so therefore it would be a nice idea, now to convince Mircosoft and Sony of the validity of the idea

  • poopie

Whether it can be done or not is not really the issue. The issue is whether or not you WANT it to be done. Xbox makes you pay to use their network with xbox live. the playstation network is free which means that you will have a lot more cheaters because you dont have to pay for the service. How can you get banned for modding when you don't pay? You just make a new account and keep on cheating. Basically it would fuck xbox gaming if this was to happen.

i don't think cross platform would be such an issue to make between pc and console, its making games that give all players equal chance and not making compromises that screw up the game (like the fact that aiming becomes less accurate when a player moves fast is a minus for shadowrun if you are a pc player)… or, maybe they should do other genres, like racing. as for xbox and ps games, it should be easy since game studios pretty much write a game for one console and adjust it for another. ask for the sale factor: if u have a friend and you want to play with them online, you will have to own the same console.

Oh come off it you fool, Xbox users cheat too. Youtube videos of hacks on COD is basically all Xbox so get off your high horse. Why don't you actually go and check it out and see for yourself. Also, yes I do know what I'm talking about, I own a PS3, my friend owns a PS3 & 360, and most other people I know run both. I don't because my friends original 360 burnt itself out.

We've played with equal amounts of bullshit hacks – and effing elevators. And trust me, there were a lot more on the Xbox than the PS3 – it's SAVE GAME HACKING! So it can be done on both, you dumbass.

The idea of cross platforms has been around for ages – the issue is compatibility of servers and coding. Obviously the games coding would be pretty much the same, but then you have issues along the lines of Microsoft and Sony being incredibly differing systems.
