Nintendo Wii 2: Release date and what’s needed in the upgrade

While many gamers would debate how much of a surprise the recent Nintendo success is, we see the Wii as a product that managed to tap into an audience that Sony and Microsoft never managed to reach.

Nintendo are selling Wii’s faster than stores can stock them and some may believe that they have no need to replace the Wii just yet, but not everyone has this view and Game Player have the view that Wii 1.5 / 2 will be coming in 2010.

Nintendo have shown with the DS and Gameboy that they like to tweak their products with updated versions for more innovation. The existing Wii is well behind the PS3 and Xbox 360 when it comes to hardware, so just what is needed in Wii 2?

Wii 2 will certainly need more high definition support and even support for DVD and more memory is welcomed, but what would you like to see added to the next Wii? Let’s know in the comments.

Also is Game Player on the mark for a 2010 release date, what’s your expectations? Most of this will depend on Wii 2 / 1.5 being an upgrade or an entirely new console.

And the point of this article is???

    • Jan Brady says:

Head Tracking would be bad ass

    • X says:

wii 2 should support all game that xbox and ps3 can . like halo 3. call of duty 5 . etc etc

      • Tkoblivion says:

the thing is nintendo has to sign a contract with those developers for them to get the games. and halo is created by a microsoft sub-company making the Xbox the only console to have it.

      • jeremy says:

That isnt up to the system creators its up to the game designers like haronix and EA Games

      • Anthony says:

well, if the wii 2 could support xbox360 and ps3 games, how would there be order. see if there was a console (codenamed “super console”) that could support every video game from every system, there would be no more exclusives that make a console famous, and if super console could support every game, people would simply buy that instead of other consoles that only support games from their own console. therefore microsoft and sony would be bankrupt, and nintendo would be rich. that also means that companies that make exclusives will have to shut down too. and there would hardly be decent games left. the end

      • horton says:

the wii already supports cod world at war, and will never support halo because microsoft owns the rights… which will never be shared.

        • Kevin G. says:

yeah cod world at war sucks on that system and are making modern warfare 1 called reflex for wii barely now just admit it the wii is a *** console it mioght not break but it sure has *** graphics.

      • Kevin G. says:

dude it will never because it ****** graphics and they are going to have graphics like xbox 360 in like 10 years when the ps4 and xbox 720 will be far more advanced.

      • Skyler V. says:

Why would you want to play a game like that on the wii. I mean the entire reason for the wii launch was to get people off the couch and moving. With those games 1. it would be extremely hard to play even with a classic controller. 2. It goes against the reason it was launched in the first place.

    • wii owner says:

      THE WII 2 SHOULD HAVE
      1.BETTER GAMES FOR HARDCORE PLAYERS
      2.FREE DEMOS LIKE XBOX 360 AND PS3
3.A NEW GAME REMOTE FOR LAZY PLAYERS THAT WORK IN ALL GAMES[NO MOVEMENT NEEDED]
4.BETTER COMMUNICATION WITH FRIENDS THAT HAVE THE GAME SYSTEM LIKE THE PS3 AND XBOX 360 HAVE[LIKE HEADSETS AND VIDEO CHAT WITH FRIENDS][NO FRIEND CODES AND STUFF LIKE THAT]
      5.BETTER GRAPHICS
6.AND THE ABILITY TO PLAY ONLINE WITH PS4 AND XBOX 720 OWNERS[THAT WAY YOU CAN PLAY WITH FRIENDS THAT DONT HAVE A WII 2 AND SONY,MICORESOFT,AND NINTENDO CAN SEE WHO HAS THE BETTER GAMERS]
7.YOU MAKE IT UP CONTINUE THE LIST IF I FORGOT ANYTHING OR U HAVE MORE IDEAS

      • Jeff says:

ya, what “wii owner” says, and i perspective, the wii 2, should have just as good of online connection, and sign in as PS3 and Xbox(my cousin has an xbox, i have ps3 and wii), and allow u to chat, send messages, voice messages, webcam chat etc, to friends with an without Wii’s. yes, the internet should be free, they can get money off games and most of the items u purchase off the internet. no doubt more HD. yes free demos, i can go on and on. DO IT NINTENDO!! and u wont get run out of business, in fact if u listen to us, u could be the best damn gaming system!!!

        • Raven says:

Nintendo can’t get run out of business, they also made the most money from this generation. What the hell are you talking about?

    • johnny bravo says:

i think you should have better controllers and more realistic looking graphics. web cam so you can see and talk to eachother.

  2. VinTheDean says:

I expect the ALL consoles will release in the same year.

Sony learned it’s leason and M$ can’t afford to be wrong again (RROD, No standard HD, no wifi built-in).

But the WII will need to be HD and at least support Blu-Ray if not offer a huge hard drive.

The Xbox720/Phoenix will also have a large hard drive. If they don’t support Blu-Ray as a format they have two options. Make their own format or have multiple DVD’s. You know, install the game from one or two dvd and play with the third.

The PS4 (and there will be one) will be blu-ray compatable upto the 1TB blue ray disc. and more memory. I am thinking at least 4GB.

Both Sony and M$ need to have at least 4GB in RAM in order to give the developers the freedom that they need.

  3. N. Andraus says:

Nintendo are already doing the upgrades, with the improvements on the motion remote coming in 2009, and periphericals like Wii Fit. Also a better online community was promised.

As for the next console, I don`t see Nintendo rushing for it. Developers seems to be understanding just now how to make games for the Wii. Plus, charts show that older plataforms, like the PS2, still sell well.

And since 2008 was the year the 360 turned a profitable machine, and the PS3 is still to reach the breakeven… I don’t expect any new console before 2011/2012. Companies need time to extract all the possible revenue from the present systems.

  4. Johnny says:

The 2010 is off a year. Nintendo will release the Wii’s successor in 2011, FIVE years after its debut. Take a look at the previous Nintendo systems, and decide for yourself: NES (nationwide): 1986, SNES: 1991, Nintendo 64: 1996, GameCube: 2001, Wii: 2006, next system: 2011- see a pattern?

Also, the Wii now has DVD support- they just don’t want it to play DVD movies just yet- look for that later this year, but it does NOT have HIGH DEFINITION DVD- look for that in the next system in 2011, after more than 50% of homes have HD.

Nintendo knows what they are doing, it’s not a fluke they are on their 5th generation- an industry first! They’ve been at this almost 30 years, they’ll be around in the 2010’s with the successor to the Wii, but don’t look for it to be a Wii clone, Nintendo is hard at work designing a system that will make the Wii’s controls seem dated!

    • JS says:

It was my understanding that the NES was released in the US in 1985.

    • Jay says:

FAIL! The NES was released on October 18, 1985 along with Super Mario Bros. not 1986. C’mon, how can you forget Mario Bros.?

      • eduardo the samurai toaster says:

DOUBLE FAIL. And the SNES was released in japan on November 21, 1990.

        • geox123 says:

that would still make the console five years after >.>

          • NintendoLover says:

Dude - your theory is flawed. Another important factor is Sony Playstation was supposed to be the nintendo playstation, and not the 64. The disagreement between nintendo and sony on the final product impacted nintendo’s original release date the SNES successor.

  5. R Eddy says:

I doubt we’ll see a true Wii 2 (or whatever they call it) until 2012…..and I’ve no idea what that will involve.

I would say late 2009/2010 could see a tweaked version of the current Wii released…. the kind of uprgrade we saw from the original DS to DS Lite.

They’ll make it slightly smaller (and remove all but 1 GC port), increase memory for storage (nothing major..maybe 4 GB), maybe a HDMI port and upscaler (they may make it slightly more powerful so it can display in true 720p instead..but don’t expect games with better textures..it’ll just be to smooth out the jaggies on standard Wii software), Wii Motion Plus built into the controller and perhaps they’ll make the nunchuk wireless.

  6. dco says:

If there is a Wii 2, it should definitely have a DVD and Blu Ray player, and a bigger hard drive so it can compete with the other systems that will be coming out. Also we should see improvements in the infrared sensor bar and wiimotes so it will recognize smaller motions more easily and accurately.
Before any new versions of the Wii come out, I anticipate that there will be more highly interactive games with peripherals due to the success of the Wii fit.

  7. wiidvdplay says:

Its more likely there will not be a wii 2. I think they are more likely to just come up with an upgrade sometime in 2009. Now on the other had the nintendo has been releasing new consoles every 5 years for like 30 years. If they keep following the pattern the next system will be out 2011. We should expect it to be called something else. After all they never came out with gamecube 2. Man can’t wait for 5th generation gaming. The next console better be up in par in graphics as xbox and playstation are.

  8. matt says:

i think that nintendo should get rid the the stupid friend codes and make it more like the 360. They should just let people make there own names and people can add them by there name not some dumb code that they give u

    • Josh says:

i agree, the social and adding people side of the Wii is terrible compared to PS3 and 360 where you just click and add. Plus the sending of messages takes an age to arrive, making it easier to send a text. that needs updating.

Though for 5th gen consoles, personally, the PS3 ability to access the menu while in game is awesome (not sure if 360 can do this) and background dl should be a requirement so we can play games while dl extras xD

Just what i want to see in all the consoles…

      • lzztopz says:

i completly agree i have a wii and its so anoying the fact you add a 12 digit code and then your friend adds one couldent it just send a letter rather than not knowing unless by phone?

  9. wiiboy101 says:

the wii is “”WELL BEHIND”" ps3 x360 AGAIN THE INTERNET MYTHS CONTINUE…. its slightly behind graphically AND HD IS NOT GRAPHICS,, idiots and there hd graphics THAT DONT EXIST..yes graphics at a higher native resolution but theres no such thing as HD graphics thats a made up marketing term….

wii can do anything ps3 can do at NATIVE 480P the whole COUGH HD THINGY just slightly sparpens the deffinition of the graphics there is npo magical hd graphics I OWN AND USE A HD TV AND 1080P VS A SOLID QUALITY 480P IMAGE IS A SLIGHT UPGRADE theres no magic here UNLESS YOUR A PC FAN OR PS3 BLURAY SHEEP TALKING OUT UR SHIT HOLE…..

wiimote is 1000x more next gen than HD and thats a fact hd offers higher res more pixels

wiimote/nunchuck offer unparalelled gaming experiance i.e TRULLY NEXT GEN bashing a dualshock is not next gen ANYONE STYATES OTHERWISE IS NOT TALKING GEN THERE TALKING SONY FANBOYIZUMS

x360 long loading glitches out dated controls

ps3 even longer loading glitches and even more outdated controls

wii fast loading glitch free gaming and a new gen futureistic way to play SO WHOS NEXT GEN

sony and microsoft please leave gaming to its expert

    • kelokera says:

ok… there are a few things you need to know before talk… When we compare a console to other “graphically” and the HD is used to say that one console can do more than other, is CORRECT!!! because if a console can’t handle a good frame rate and a sort of effects and filters at a hight resolution, them that console can’t do “HD graphics”, but can handle “SD graphics”… About the Wii doing whatever the PS3 at 480? I don’t think so… the chip inside the Wii can be compared with a GeForce 2… and I’m serious on this!!!! I read a article from a developer, and he explain what they can or can’t do on the Wii… and the original XBOX is way better than the Wii when it comes to graphics.

About the “Innovations” is true that the wimote is fun… but you can’t play all with it… or… can you do a HADOKEN?? (just a joke) I buy a Wii when it comes out… and it was fun!!! but I’m a SERIOUS player… Wii Sports was great… and metroid… but I need a real console… about the way I control it? well I’ve been doing it the same way for more than 20 years… I’ll not die if I keep it that way.

I own a PS3, sell my Wii… but I keep my original NES… I know graphics are not the big deal when you look at fun…but it helps a loot!!! fun is about big effects and a loot of characters on screen at the same time… lights, particles, etc… ant the Wii can’t do it… well it can… but not the way I want…

    • Alex. says:

wiiboy dude shutup all three systems are “NEXT GEN” its just that the 360/ps3 are graphics oriented and the wii is innovation oriented. this is a post about a wii sequel so shutup about what system is good or not, OK? oh and “HD GRAPHICS” is real you know…HD simply states that the native playable resolution is that of 1440×900 or 1360×768 or something around those. hopefully with anti-aliasing.

      nice troll;
guys, did you really have to take the bait?
