Freescale vs. Intel: who will win netbook CPU market?
By: Peter Chubb | January 6, 2009 | Leave a CommentWe reported yesterday that Freescale was to launch their new i.MX515 processor for netbooks; this low-cost CPU will help Freescale take the fight to Intel who has had the market share for some time now. The i.MX515 will be the first CPU to take the fight to Intel’s Atom.
Netbooks normally cost on average $299, but by using the new Freescale i.MX515 processor, that cost could be as low as $199. If that is the case, then Freescale would be able to take a huge portion of the market share from rival, Intel.
The new processor will have a clock speed of 600 MHz to 1 GHz and will offer support for both DDR2 and mobile DDR1 memory. Freescale have said that they will start volume production in Q2 of 2009, so by next Christmas a huge percentage of netbooks will have this new cheaper processor in.
