Freescale are to launch a new low-cost processor for use in netbooks, and it looks all set to challenge Intel in that market with the i.MX515. Intel has had the market share in most CPU markets, but Freescale hope that their new chip will change all that.
Freescale have designed the i.MX515 to run on netbooks and will perform basic computing functions, this includes browsing the Internet, and running small applications. The first netbook to feature the new Freescale i.MX515 netbook will use Wi-Fi wireless networking by Pegatron.
When it comes to netbook processors, Intel dominates that market with their Atom CPU. These can be found in netbooks for around $299, but Frescale will reduce the price of the netbooks even further with their new processors. The new netbooks should retail at $199.
