Sony Corp. closer to breaking even on PS3: 35% less to make
By: Peter Chubb | December 30, 2008 | Leave a CommentSony Corp. is getting much closer to breaking even on their next generation games console, the PS3. The PlayStation 3 now costs 35% less to make than previous models, but do not get too excited as it will be a long time before we see some sort of price cut, if ever.
We all know that Sony is locked in a tough battle with Nintendo Co. and Microsoft Corp., as they have the Wii and Xbox 360 respectively. Sony is currently losing that battle, which is a direct result of the high price of the games console. Sony has packed so much high-tech hardware in, that Sony find it hard to bring the price down.
The previous PS3 was sold at a significant loss, Sony made up for that short fall in game sales and royalties. Thanks to key changes in components, the price has come down from $690.23 for the first-generation PlayStation 3, to $448.73 for the latest generation.
