Sony PS3 comeback failure: Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 still winning

2008 looked as though it would finally be the year of the Sony PS3, as sales looked promising from the start. Now we have reached the final part of 2008 and things have changed, as it looks as though the PlayStation 3 comeback is more of a failure than a success. Sales of the PS3 console are still much lower than the Nintendo Wii as well as the Xbox 360.

Sony PS3 sales were twice as much as last year, and were looking to close the gap on the Xbox 360, but Microsoft introduced a number of price cuts, which was seen as a massive blow to PlayStation 3 sales. Early results from the Christmas shopping season do not look that great for the PS3, Nintendo Wii sales have almost doubled, while Xbox 360 sales have seen an increase of 8 percent. Sales for the PlayStation 3 look to be flat.

Sony was hoping that console and video game sales would help their core electronic business, which has been hit hard by the downturn of the global economy. It seems that Sony’s idea of selling an advanced game machine with the best hardware looks to be backfiring on them, hopefully this will force Sony it to cutting the price of the PS3.

I think the main issue is the PS3 is currently an adult console, set mainly by the price. It is good value considering what you get for your money but the fact of the matter for younger people and parents it is expensive. What I’ve seen is people who are just buying a HDTV are getting PS3s as a way to get the most out of their high def TVs.

All I know, is I am a hardcore gamer and I live in a house of gamers, we have 2 360’s constantly in use and had to have 2 fixed cause we use them so much and the PS3 we bought got relegated to the closet…There is just nothing that special about the PS3, it’s really an overpriced blueray player and I don’t feel the need to replace my dvds with bluerays. (and no MGS4 is not a console seller.)

I always knew the ps3 would fail. It cost to much for the consumer and now to much for sony lol. With its price and lack of killer must have system seller games no matter what the system may cost is the result. Console makers need to calm down on these so called multipurpose machines that add cost lower reliability and lower user base. Stick with just gaming in mind it would have had success like the wii did. With the cost of living going higher economy ups and downs sony needs to rethink on who actually buys these things, the very few that have deep pockets isnt enough to sustain success. Oh wait i remember at a electronics show when sony first announced the price everyone gasped and sony said ps3 is so good it would make you want to buy one no matter the price lol. Wow how tides have turned lesson learned.

I just recently switched back to playing my ps3 after months collecting dust. My 2nd 360 now has disk tray problems “it wont eject” made it unplayable. I decided not to even bother to repair or get another 360. The 360 is a lemon, the ford pinto of the console world lol

I only use ps3 for blueray movies as a game machine it sux.

me too. as soon as i heard the lowest end model was going to cost 500 and the one with more harddrive space was going to cost 600 my jaw hit the floor. and i thought…. what are they thinking, no one’s gonna buy that.

now the price is to the point where i consider buying one, but i already have netflix and xbox, and a wii.. but the games and blueray movies are too expensive. i mean, i was at target, you can get the matrix dvd 3 set for 9.99. the blueray version costs 99.99.

alternatively you can get high definition content from something like netflix. i love netflix.

The arguments about cost of the PS3 are crazy. You get a game console and a blu-ray player, along with free online play through PSN. If you want this on 360, you are looking at $300 for the console (same as the 80gb, and new 120gb playstation). You also have your Xbox Live cost. Added to that is the money that millions of people wasted on the HD player for the XBox, as well as the wireless adapter which runs over $100. The PS3 has wireless built in.

And if you don’t want to take any of that into account, the graphics on the PS3 completely blow away the 360. If you don’t beleive me, play the same game side by side. If it wasn’t for Halo, which blew with ODST, there wouldn’t be a need for anyone to own an Xbox.
