New LG Notebook:LCD Screen Powered by Sunlight
By: Peter Chubb | December 23, 2008
When using a notebook you always know that the screen is often hard to see in sunlight, so working outside is often something you avoid. LG however have harnessed the sunlight and have managed to use it to power the LCD screen on their new 14.1-inch notebook.
The LCD screen is driven by sunlight, and helps to increase the contrast ratio and save up to 75% of the power over normal LCD notebook screens. Expect this to be one of a number of LCD innovations at CES 2008 (Consumer Electronics Show.)
These new TFT LCD screens for notebooks use selective reflection plates in existing backlight panels, this then allows you to switch from either eflective mode luminance setting, great for sunlight or transmissive mode in a low luminance setting, ideal for indoor and night use. LG claim that these new laptops will have a contrast ratio up to four times as high as a standard notebook LCD screen.
