Xbox 720 will not use Blu-Ray: Reasons explained

When Sony fans first learned that the new PlayStation was to use a Blu-ray player, Microsoft came out and said that the format was not needed for gaming. This has since been proven wrong, but Microsoft still seem to be apprehensive to switch to Blu-ray, and for those who are hoping that the successor to the Xbox 360, the 720 will come with a Blu-ray player, I would not hold your breath.

The Gamer Access Blog said that when HD DVD lost the battle to Blu-ray, there were many that assumed that Microsoft would start to support the winning format, but instead Microsoft said that they will support digital movie downloads instead, and still use the same old format for their games.

The reason that Microsoft will not use a Blu-ray player in the new Xbox 720 is simple, they do not take defeat very well and will do all they can to try and defeat their competitor next time round. Do not be surprised of Microsoft look for another new format, just like they did with the PlayStation 3.

Blu-ray hasn’t really made that much diffrence has it?..I mean look at MGS4, 5 installs & it doesnt look any better than Gears?, (by the way MGS is my favourite gaming franchise) If/when MGS4 comes to the 360 & i had to choose between playing the PS3 copies, with its annoying installs! or changing a disc in the middle on the 360, I’d sell my PS3 copy tomorrow.

Microsoft is looking at several royalty-free solutions. The current leading candidate is HD-DVD-ROM-51 format, but QuadLayer DVD is also a contender. Microsoft has royalty-free access to both tech thanks to its patent cross license with Toshiba.

See, Blu-Ray royalty is $60 per player and Microsoft will not pay this royalty, nor will they put Java in any of its product. Blu-Ray was never even a possibility at Microsoft.

Deadmeat is right, Microsoft has a long history of not wanting to pay other companys for the things they use. They’ll happily try and shove their own proprietary formats down other manufacturers/developers throats to open up new cash cows but they don’t like to feed anyone else money. This is especially so with blu-ray format which would be feeding sony cash to fight the xbox.

There is another reason why the xbox 360 wont support blu ray in their games either and that is because it would divide their market in two.. those with blu ray drives and can play newer games and those without it.. or they’d haveto make two versions of their new games…

They might as well come out witha new console if they’re going to do that.

LOL. The author is delusional. CNN declared the PS3 to be a sinking ship. End of story. LOL

Damn Im gutted, you’ll think that after the HD add on being discounied that they would make a blu ray add on in the 360’s lifespan (before 2011, when the 720 is launched.) not delay it until the 720’s lifespan, and the idea of it not being made a MS format at all is a kick in the head for Xbox oweners like me, cos I want the 360 to be the big thing by 2011, not to be set back by unwishful thinking, well you got a console you gotta make peripherals and they have to be made before the successor is releaced, infact before the successor has a annouced releace date, cos I’m backing 360 all the way, it has the best games, and the graphics is just as good (if not in some cases better.) than the ps3 to top that aswell, all I can say is that a hope DMD is just as sucssesful as Blu Ray in the 360 generation, because if in the next 2 years MS make the right moves, then there could be big things for MS in the gaming industry. mcjakeqcool

I dont understand why mircosoft wont use blu-ray its the best format all DVD’s that come out will now be on blu-ray so what you gonna do pay 800 pounds for a blu-ray player or 300 on a console that has it in and for your info the ps3 is not a sinking ship for a start it has better games people keep going on about yea 360 has halo 3 and gears of war get upto date that was ages ago the ps3 has the best selling game out which is Little Big Planet and 360 wont have that becuse it belongs to sony and metal gear soild that wont go to 360 either that game has been with playstation from the start its the same with Gran Turismo that will never go to mircosoft becuse that also belongs to sony the ps3 is the most poweful and update console on the market its online gameing is even free ive had 2 xbox 360’s and they both broke the xbox 360 faliure rate is 33 percent the ps3 is only 2 percent

but if mircosoft dont use blu-ray and stick to normal DVD format then they might aswell not make another console becuse it will be a waste of time and money

  10. mcjakeqcool says:

They would make another console, as they would have no choice, the PS1 was the most sucsessful console ever, and the ps2 was still releaced, once a leap in technology is made, every one else copies it, it’s just competition. P.S I am releaceing a new single shortly called JQ (To cool for school) and it is icy chill.
