Why All The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hate?

Why All The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hate?

By: Peter Chubb | December 17, 2008 | 10 Comments

Bitbag has wrote an article asking why all the PS3 hate, and it is a valid question. Whenever something is written about the Sony PlayStation 3, the poor console comes under a barrage of abuse, not only from Xbox 360 users but also from the whole industry.

Bitbag has hit upon something, and that is the fact that the whole industry has something against Sony for winning the last two generations of games consoles. First Time Magazine was the first to kick Sony, then Alleyinsider and now Kotaku have started their own media attack on the PS3.

Many are just jumping on the bandwagon and kicking Sony while they are down, but the funny thing is, Sony are not down. Bitbag are correct, the PlayStation 3 is still performing well considering the price of the games console.

Alleyinsider have suggested that the Sony PS3 is a sinking ship based on November sales. Sony sold 378,000 units for November 2008 compared to 466,000 in November 2007. How can selling 378,000 unit be a bad thing, it is not the fault of the Sony PS3, but as an economy as a whole. All sales are being affected, from car sales, computer sales, even down to clothes. I don’t understand it either. Sony are the good guys in all this. Microsoft tried to force their arm by launching the 360 early (despire knowing it had problems), Sony did the responsible thing, and waited until it was feature complete and reliable.

I know the answer to why the PS3 hate. Microsoft pays massive amounts of money to viral marketing teams, who infiltrate forums/blogs/message boards, and post misinformation and FUD. Talking up their product, talking down the competition. Microsoft also have lots of media outlets in their back pockets, paying them off under the thin guise of advertising.

Sure Sony are not perfect, and have played dirty, but Microsoft are1000x worse, not just in their gaming division, across all their business units. Google for Halloween Documents for further reading.

The games bring in the revenue, the games are selling fine, the 360 of course has sold more consoles so it’s reasonable to say that they sell more games. But due it’s own piracy it isn’t brining in as much as it could, that’s where Live comes in for Microsoft.

When the PS3 is cracked, expect to pay up for online services “to keep the cheaters(bootleggers) away”

Forget about gaming for a second, think about the planet and the death and destruction occuring, oh but wait, no one cares anymore, let me shooot up the block in GTA! wooooohoooooo

    Souless freaks.

I have the 360 and PS3 and appreciate the all-round quality of the Sony machine. The 360 has some good games but it shows desperation on MS part to have two weak Halo games planned for 2009. I agree with Mark – MS have done a fantastic job of down talking the PS3 and they’re relying on US media support for this. Sony are doing a fantasically bad job of marketing the PS3 but I had to laugh at CNN aritcle stating PS3 is a sinking ship. Sales in November are reportedly down 19% but did they mention that 360 sales were only up 7% despite slashing the cost of the console to less than the Wii? 7% would be good if it wasn’t for the Wii sales, which were off the chart. Anyone who says there is no difference between DVD and Blu-Ray picture quality needs more than their eyes tested. Hats off to Nintendo who have done a great job of marketing the Wii – limiting supply for the last two years has ensured everyone wanting to give their kids a stocking filler has rushed out to get one. Mario (any iteration) played with proper pad is just like it was Game Cube and Ultra64 before that – and it looks worse as it’s now played on 40″ + screens.

i think thats utter rubbish,i`ve never heard the ps3 come under hate at all .its actually the 360 and its rrod that gets the hate all over the news n costing microsoft billions and costumers complaining….and microsoft keep buying ps3 exclusives to keep there sinking out of date 360 alive till the next gen…….only thing i`ve heard is that ps3 needs a price cut,not exactly hating is it.

How can people be SO blind. BOTH companies are out to make money.
I read everywhere that all Microsoft does is buy up all the competition to “Keep their Monopoly”. That is such stupid b*llsh*t I can’t stand reading it anymore.
I’m old enough to remember when all those movie studios, record companies and businesses you see under the Sony brand were all independent AMERICAN companies. Do you think Star Trek was REALLY produced by Sony????
They have taken their profits to put such AMERICAN companies like RCA, Emerson, Zenith, Westinghouse, Sylvania – just to name a few – with their business practices and loopholes in the law (Import loopholes) to get to where they are now by undercutting price on what we could make locally.
I realize if you grew up in the last twenty five years none of this effects you since you never took pride in an American made product or film company since they were all purchased by foreign companies using these same practices – before you were even born, but for Christ sakes, open your eyes to the fact that they TOO are a cut throat company in EVERY fashion that you seem to see Microsoft.

ThePS3 is a fantastic machine,if there was no competition and the games were made for the PS3 then it would be a clear winner, but the fact that Microsoft got into the gamesworld,Sony should have woken up way back in 2005,but they thought that loyalty would reign, guess not.Look at the walkman, Sony was the leader in that, along comes Apple and steals there thunder and Sony are still trying to come back. The end of the day it is all about numbers,if I was a developer and was told that I could move 10 million units on Xbox 360 or about 4 million on the PS3, I would go for the bigger number.

Mark, this isn’t about good guys and bad guys, hence as Bill pointed out “BOTH companies are out to make money”.

The PS3 is a great console, it really is, however I believe what we are seeing is the backlash from Sony’s hype machine at the time the console was launched.

Some gamers hear seem to have quickly forgotten (or are unaware) of Sony’s claims and promises back in 2005, where at E3 they did everything they possibly could to make the PS3 seem twice as powerful as the 360. They produced numbers which made it appear that the CPU in the PS3 was twice as powerful, that the GPU was twice as powerful, they frequently used the word ‘supercomputer’ when talking about Cell, they claimed PS3′s power was 2 TFLOPS compared to the 360′s 1 TFLOP (again twice the power), Ken Kutaragi called the 360 XBox 1.5, they said the next-gen doesn’t start until they said so, they produced pre-rendered game footage and implied it was running in realtime (MotorStorm, Killzone 2) and didn’t admit to it being pre-rendered for a year, and so on.

So given all of this and more, gamers and journalists expectations of what the PS3 will deliver were extremely high, in fact, they were far too high but this is what Sony wanted, because they hoped gamers would hold out on buying a 360 whilst they waited for the PS3, a tactic they used successfully against the Dreamcast with the PS2.

Instead, the 360 sold well, despite the problems, and upon launch of the PS3, it became clear that the PS3 was barely more powerful than the 360, despite costing almost twice as much! A whilst some may argue about how much more powerful the PS3 is, no-one can honestly say that it matches the hype of being twice as powerful as the 360.

Hence all this ‘hate’ is a problem of Sony’s own making imo. They overhyped the console and raised everyone’s expectations far too high, and so now, despite having a great console with great games and some superb exclusives, it is suffering from the actions of the past.

Things have improved and will continue to improve for the PS3 as the price drops and more and more great exclusives are released, however it still wouldn’t be the console Sony promised before launch, and it would still be more expensive than the competition, which I feel will be a problem until the next round of consoles are released from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo over the next 2-4 years.

yeah why is sony ps3 being hated? the games batter on ps3 than xbox 360. xbox 360 ain’t nothing but a wii look at the kitty games.

I get tired of watching Microsoft’s viral marketing campaign take on to its full effect. The media is out for money, just as much as Sony and Microsoft are, so he who offers more money gets the better treatment on their web sites. No royalties, no extra exposure, but now the system has gone up a level. Not only do they dedicate more time and space on the 360, but they also make sure the PS3 gets the shitty end of the stick. Some shit web sites actually use the PS3′s negative feed back to boost their hits. Its such big news when the PS3 is failing, not so impressive when the 360 is doing poorly.

Microsoft is really changing the way the gaming industry works, and it sucks. From making premium DLC standard, to charging for online play, to nickle and dimming every wallpaper and theme available, to influencing the way reporters present their precious 360, to “making” sure Halo 3 gets a 10 score everywhere, to promoting “exclusive DLC” of multiplatform games, to buying off exclusives.

Microsoft’s business tactics have always been a big huge BRIBE, it all comes down to purchasing sell outs. It happened with windows, quick time, video games, and soon digital distribution. That is their ultimate goal, to monopolize digital distribution, the XBOX project is just one of their many trojans.

@cell989. That was nothing but a pointless rant. :-) Microsoft are not doing anything wrong to the games industry regardless of what you *want* to believe.

Hence you just sound like all those Nintendo fanboys during the N64 days complaining about how Sony were “ruining the games industry” just because the Playstation console was more successful.

So please, less whinging and more playing. :)
