Yahoo Inc have said that they are introducing a host of new features that will hopefully allow the e-mail service to be more like popular social network sites Facebook and MySpace. These new features have been in development of over a year now.
The new features are the brain child of Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang, which he first spoke about at CES 2008. Yahoo have had a hard time of late as the company has had to lay off a number of workers, it is hoped that these new features will help to turn Yahoo’s tide and help their 275 million e-mail users.
Yahoo is also opening up their e-mail service to features that are created by outside companies, such as Flixster, the online movie site. Yahoo hopes to be able to incorporate these new features onto their overhauled homepage, as well as their toolbar.

It’s interesting to see developments like this - I remember when people said email was basically done and wasn’t going to evolve, and then GMail came round. Making it more like social networking is a cool idea - maybe merge them together so you have a one-stop-shop for both?
