Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360 and profit on avatar clothing sales

By: Peter Chubb | December 16, 2008 | 2 Comments

There are a number of ways for both Sony and Microsoft to make money when we use our avatars on our PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. One way is by clothing sales for our avatars, Sony allow you to fully cloth your avatar in cool clothing gear for $20.

Sony seems to want to go down this avenue, but Microsoft do not share the same ideas, as they believe that there is no profit in it, which is why they gave away the first batch of new Avatar clothing for free.

Microsoft prefers for gamers to unlock items for their avatars through the games that they are playing. Developers for Microsoft are working hard to get this feature working, so it should not be long before users get to see the results on Experience.

No offence, but this article seems inaccurate and misleading.

For a start, clothe your Avatar for $20? Where the hell did they get that figure from? Clothing items cost $0.49 each, so even to buy shoes, pants, shirt, hat, gloves and jewellery in one go would only cost $2.94.

Also, I should bloody well hope MS don’t charge for clothes since they rake in hundreds of millions of dollars with forced online subscriptions for people wanting to play online! The reason Sony charge you $5 for Home stuff is because they don’t want to charge you $50 to play with other people online…

One last thing, Sony have already confirmed that the latest incarnation of the trophy system allows devs to link Home items (clothing or furniture) to trophies, so when you get the new trophy popup you can also get a popup telling you that you have unlocked a Home item.

I personally think Sony’s approach is much more flexible – they cater for free content, premium paid-for content, and user generated content. Whereas MS have a more “it’s my way or the highway” approach of “give us $50 a year and you get what you’re given”.

    Very well put PS3Owner.

I really don’t have to post a comment since you pretty much covered it.

The things that I will add is that M$ loves nickle and diming is user base. It still baffles me how M$ charges people for themes and picture packs. These items are free on the PS3. Granted sony did start to release premium themes but the majority of the themes for the PS3 are free. All images are also free on PSN

There are sites dedicated to PS3 themes. The best part is that you can actually go to these sites right from the PS3 Web Browser and download the new theme right to your PS3.

Plus with the new NXE interface, can they still apply their old themes. that would really suck if you could not do that.
