Well whoopee-do, a PS3 game in 1080p – I think it’s shocking how many games are in 720p, especially as its full HD abilities are one of the main selling points of the machine. Even ‘Home’ is 720p.

Slippy Sloppy – If you know anything about framerates, and apparently you do…NOT, you would understand the engineering and concept behind 720P and 1080P. The PS3 doesn’t do faux pas 1080P scaling like the Windows 360, it’s a true HD system. It is unfortunate that Sony chose a weak video card, i.e. the RSX by Nvidia but we’ll have to live with it. If you want a good look at what the PS3 can do in 1920×1080 check out Metal Gear 4. That’s how games should look!

I’m just giving you a hard time! Have a great Holiday.

1080p has more than twice as many pixels on screen as 720p, hence very few games run at that resolution natively.

Take any game which is native 1080p, and the devs could do more with the graphics if then ran it a lower resolution (more effects, smoother framerate etc).

LOL at the first poster… Greets fellow Troll. ;)

FYI, Lair was 1080p w/ locked frame rate but we all know about the relationship between graphics and gameplay. Halo 3 was fun, COD4 was fun and get this… Neither were HD. 8o out of curiosity… Is gears 2 1080p locked at 60fps? *walks out the door*

  • Mizu

good dont know why Boohopo is so angry. cant wait to drive into this HD bloodbath

Fanboys, fanboys, fanboys. Of course not all 360 games are native 1080p and we all know which ones they are but quite a few games look sharper and higher res compared to the PS3 version – Pure being a very good example (though the colours look richer on the PS3).

And I’ve got MGS4, it looks great but where are all the other 1080p games? It’s very poor.

  • Rob

@Slippy Sloopy – I noticed yesterday that the box for Metal Gear actually says 1080p isn’t supported..? As for other 1080p games you have Socom, WipeOut HD, SuperStardust and… allegedly, according to the box CoD:4. Struggling to think of others…

Its really about that time that they start making all games in 1080p. There are a lot of people who have a TV that is over 50 inches and at that point, at 720p, the games start looking really bad. I really hope that by mid 2009 at least 50 percent of games are 1080p and 100% of the major releases are as well.

And with that said. I thought dead space was 1080p. I downloaded the demo and it only played at 720p. What gives.

  • Slippy Sloppy

The MGS4 box says 720p but the game seems to run at 1080p, I assume either the game was upgraded before the box went to print or there was an online update. WipeOut looks stunning in 1080p. It’s a shame there aren’t more games in 1080p.

I don’t really care about people arguing over what’s best or how the 360 achieves 1080p on many games but what I do care about is buying a game for the system it looks best on. Truth be told I’d rather buy games for the PS3 but more often than not the 360 has the best version and the 1080p output certainly provides some of the improvement. If people don’t agree with me that’s fine, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.

  • Rob

It is a shame more and more games aren’t in 1080p…just thought of another GT5 lol…

I kind of agree about the 360 but i think the tide is now changing, Killzone 2 looks simply stunning as does the new Drakes Fortune, i think over the next year there will start to be a more noticeable gap with graphics and hopefully developers will push 1080p native graphics more and more…

I plan on purchasing a dynex 42″ flat panel LCD 1080 hdtv. I also own PS3 and a 360. Is this a good deal? I want the best tv possible for my games :)

  • The Future of Sega

    1080p not just 1080. Woops :P

  • Slippy Sloppy

IMO, 360 games in 1080p (regardless of how it gets there) look better than 720p games on the PS3 BUT from what I’ve seen 1080p games on the PS3 look better than 1080p games on the 360.

Again my opinion only, fanboys on either camp may whinge and wine and call me a troll (oh dear) but that’s what I’ve experienced so far.

I say it again I think it’s a disgrace the amount of PS3 games that are in 720p but I’m glad to hear the tide is turning because I think the difference is noticeable on any 1080p TV.

  • Rob

Never heard of Dynex and without knowing how much you are paying couldn’t comment on whether it’s a good deal or not… I’d go for a Sony or Samsung if money is no limit…

  • Rob

@ Slippy Sloppy – You’ve also got to remember that just because your TV says it’s running in 1080p doesn’t actually mean that it is. Modern Warfare claimed 1080p goodness but was proven to be running at something like 640p…

  • Slippy Sloppy

    @The Future of Sega

I’ve got Samsung and I’m very happy with it but I’m also gonna throw Toshiba into the mix. My mate’s got one that has <10mm casing surrounding the screen and it looks amazing. It also means that if you buy a 40″ the TV in total isn’t much bigger than that.

  • Peter

Any game with any substantial degree of visual complexity is NOT going to run on the 360 or PS3 at a native 1080×1920 resolution. These consoles just don’t have the graphical grunt to do so. Even the very latest top end graphics cards for the PC struggle at these resolutions.

  • Slippy Sloppy

What about MGS4, WipeOut HD then? Are these not 1080p games? They look it to me and the quality is certainly sharper and with less jaggies than the majority of 720p games. 1080p games on the 360 (no matter how it gets there) also seem to have that edge over the 720p game on the PS3 – Pure being a very good example.

Is it simply upscaling? If it is it still looks better and surely what started the debate is GOW III being in 1080p and I don’t doubt that games graphical complexity.

  • Rob

WipeOut HD runs at a rock solid native 1080p 60fps and doesn’t show a hint of slow down evern when you have quake, rockets, mines, bombs and 8 racers all at the same time. And the game is very good looking and detailed. So it can be done and can be done well, we just need more developers to aim for the standards set with WipeOut

  • GamerFeed

“What about MGS4, WipeOut HD then? Are these not 1080p games?”

    WipeOut yes, MGS4 no.

MGS4′s native resolution is confirmed to be 1024*768 with some AA (hence less jaggies and therefore appears as if it’s at a higher res), and it is then scaled to your TV’s resolution of 720p or 1080p.

MGS4 Support 480p 720p and 1080p. I have the box and it clearly states that. Out of the games I have it is stunning. I have a 46inch Samsung 1080p television and I can tell you ever single pixel is utilized. Unlike most games that I’ve been looking at buying which run at 720p. I believe that most games developer have not learned to use the PS3′s power. Then again it might be that they just want to pump out as much games across the 2 powerhouse consoles (PS3 and XBOX 360) than to take time and make graphically beautiful game. I really want to see what God of War 3 will bring to the table.

  • GamerFeed

“MGS4 Support 480p 720p and 1080p. I have the box and it clearly states that.”

Sigh… yes because that’s the TV resolution supported! You can run it at 1080p as I mentioned already, because it is upscaled from 1024*768, not because it’s running natively in 1080p (1920*1080).

Numerous games on PS3 and 360 actually run at less than 720p. Chances are you have some of them, games such as COD4 (600p) and even GTA4 (630p on PS3) http://game-on-game.com/gta-4-goes-1120×630-on-ps3, and many more.

Think you’ll see 600p or 630p listed on the back of the box then? Nope, of course not, what you’ll see listed are the TV resolutions of 720p and 1080p, because the game will be upscaled to those resolutions. The same is true for MGS4.

“I believe that most games developer have not learned to use the PS3’s power.”

Same with 360, same with all consoles. The longer they’re out, the more devs learn to push them further.

Well dont know shytez bout 1080i or 720p,but people should calibrate their t.v bestbuy hooked mine and I was shocked at how sharp and clear the graphics are and enhanced sound too…just thought maybe should look into it its worth it…..cheers!

Games running at 1080p doesn’t need anti-aliasing. And the PS3 GPU it is not a weak video card. It may be less powerful in numbers but don’t let the number foolish you. Actually, the shaders on a PS3 GPU has a dedicated 24 pixel pipelines and 8 vertex pipelines. The Xbox 360 has 48 unified shaders that can be distribute on both sections. That’s a plus for Xbox 360 GPU because you can apply up to 48 pixels or vertex pipelines at any given time but if you do that you will lack on pixel or vertex pipeline section. So you need to distribute it to both sections accordingly to obtain better results. In fact, you always will need both pixel and vertex pipelines all the time and the best way to make a game look better is to distribute those pipelines correctly so you always have a pixel and vertex pipelines balance. So Xbox 360 GPU has the ability to apply up to 48 pipelines in any section at any given time. i.e. you can use 24 pixel pipelines and 24 vertex pipelines or 10 pixel and 38 vertex pipelines and so on.. whatever you need on the Xbox 360 GPU. PS3 GPU can apply up to 24 pixel pipelines and only 8 vertex pipelines on his GPU but and most important, actually the PS3 Cell processor can handle vertex calculations so you have a total of 24 pixel pipelines and “who knows how many vertex pipeline calculations” all you need to do is to play Uncharted 2 to get an idea… Well About the textures again they are almost equal 512MB. The PC’s GPU these days has 1GB to 2GB that’s the reason for better textures but.. once again it’s all about a system as a whole and if you talk about quantity and space needed you can bet Blu-ray disks has far more space to work at. That’s the reason Xbox 360 needs a more powerful GPU so they don’t have sufficient space on a single DVD and the GPU need to decompress all the streaming texture. The PS3 GPU gets off easy as it does not need to do all the textures decompression thanks to the huge amount of space available on a single Blu-ray disks and the CPU. Also the Xbox 360 doesn’t has the ability to do vertex calculations on his CPU. The PS3 do, and combining that with Blu-ray discs all you need is a designing staff that want to work beyond the limit. That’s why you see some multi-platform games running a little bit better on xbox 360 because they all thinking about money and not quality games. In short, if you separate the GPU of both systems and attach it to a system with the same technical specs from CPU to DVD’s the Xbox360 GPU and graphics will be better but that is not this case. PS3 does not need a better GPU to run better graphics. All it need is a descent GPU, a powerful CPU that can run GPU calculations(Cell Processor) and huge amount of space available (Blu-ray). So by combining all those elements you get better graphics, better streaming textures, better shaders, better effects, better…. OMG just buy a PS3.
