Sony PS3 is dying: price cut is needed

The sales figures for the Sony PS3 do not look that promising for the month of November, as they were down 19 percent compared to the same period last year. CNNMoney’s Silicon Alley Insider column has even gone so far as to say that the PS3 is “A sinking ship.”

Saying that the PlayStation 3 is dying is a bit harsh, but we all agree with what their conclusion is, and that is that a price cut is needed. A cut is needed soon, and it needs to be a substantive one. The article understands that the PS3 has at least a ten year lifespan, but that has not stopped it being on the brink of falling behind the Xbox 360.

The article not only talks about the high price of the Sony PlayStation 3, it also discusses the fact that no one cares about the games console being able to play Blu-ray movies. The article also covers the lack of system selling software.

Not even the fanboys can argue (though they’ll try) that the inclusion of Blu-Ray didn’t hinder the launch and supply of the PS3 in the it’s first year. Since then I have to disagree that “no one cares about Blu-Ray” as this was my driving factor in eventually buying a PS3 and the same for other PS3 owners I know.

This may be the problem with the machine (if there really is one), BD has split the user base into people who want to watch movies and people who want to play games first and foremost. For movie watchers the price of the PS3 is reasonable but for people who only want to play games there are cheaper and arguably better alternatives.
