Sony PS3 is gaining strong momentum

Sony has announced that its Playstation brand has performed well this holiday season so far with all of its three platforms having solid results.

Recent NPD figures have seen that in November, Sony shifted more than one million units which is a 93 percent increase from sales in October.

Its Playstation 3 console shifted 378,071 units during November which led Sony to state that the PS3 has ‘continued its strong momentum during the holiday season.’

Read the whole article in the link below. It seems both Microsoft and Sony are both having success with their consoles. What do you think?

I’m surprised they were able to have sales gains even without giving away a barebones version for $199. Oh, but lets not forget that the Nintendo Wii still outsells them 3:1, being that they are the exact same type of product, going after the exact same market.

  2. PS3Owner says:

Here are some FACTS on the PS3’s performance this year:

In the last 12 months PS3 sales have improved 69% compared to the previous 12 months sales.

In the last 12 months 360 sales have improved by just 35% (largely due to the price cut)

The console install base of the PS3 since the start of 2008 has increased by 98%

The console install base of the 360 since the start of 2008 has increased by just 53%

The average global monthly sales for the PS3 based on the number of months available in each region is 780,000 units a month

The average global monthly sales for the 360 based on the number of months available in each region is 672,000 units month

Comparing Global lifecycle adjusted sales shows that the PS3 has outsold the 360.

Even ignoring the 360’s large headstart the PS3 has already overtaken it in Europe and Japan despite it’s early lack of games and relatively high price. The PS3 has outsold the 360 by 300,000 units in Europe and outsold it in Japan by 1.74M units.

The 360’s recent sales spike is driven from a 3rd year product price cut, the PS3 numbers will not be boosted by a 3rd year price cut until next November. It’s unlikely MS will have any counter to this as they have already played all their cards (short of repeating their XBox strategy and just bring out their next model)

As well as the expected price cut in 2009 the PS3 is also boosted by exclusives like God of War III, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, Infamous, MAG, The Agency, DC Universe online and possibly FF vs XIII and Team ICO’s project (though these two may be 2010). The 360 has very little up it’s sleeve to counter these big hardware shifting exclusives… Combine this with the momentum the PS3 has over the 360 as illustrated in the figures above and I think we will be looking at a very different picture in 2009 - a picture that will probably involve the 360 being in 3rd place…

    I forgot KillZone 2 as well… ;)

I don’t know where you guys get your numbers. Per NPD:

    PS3 November 07 sales- 466,000
    PS3 November 08 sales- 378,000

That’s a 19% drop from last November guys.

    XB360 November 07 sales- 777,000
    XB360 November 08 sales- 836,000

    7% Increase.

Saying they shifted over 1 million units is misleading considering that 60% of those units belong to the PS2 and PSP. You guys are great for spinning numbers for Sony. Too bad it just isn’t true.

  5. CMoney says:

Let’s be honest guys. This is horrible news for Sony and the PS3. PSP & PS2 profits have always offset PS3 losses. But now the PS2 appears to be dead & PSP isn’t moving any software so they won’t be able to support the PS3s negative growth. Sony just cut 8,000 jobs, and things are going to get worse before they get better. The long awaited price cut may never come and if it does it will hurt Sony financially.

  6. Larry says:

360 had a 5.5 mil unit lead at the launch of the ps3. That gap is now 7 mil. That 300,000 unit lead in europe was from last month - that has dissipated in the wake of the 360 outselling the ps3 in europe by 100 - 150 thousand per WEEK in the last couple of months. And seeing as how the ps3 cost sony $400 mill last quarter and over $3 BILLION since launch, I don’t see a price cut anytime soon. The only thing keeping the ps3 alive is the Playstation name, which is eroding as time goes by. If MS had launched that system instead of Sony, it would have died the first year ala 3DO.

One thing you have to know and learn is that NPD only counts the US and not the whole world

The number that PS3Owner posted where world wide numbers. This is the real value. Everyone thinks the US is the mecka of gaming. But rest of the world things otherwise.

The PS3 has outsold the Xbox in 08. Their recent increase in sales is only attributed to the recent price cut. Which is allowing existing owners to replace their RROD plaged boxes with newer that don’t heat up as often.

“In the last 12 months PS3 sales have improved 69% compared to the previous 12 months sales. ”

Compared to last november, PS3 sales were down 19%

Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 across Europe in november

“The console install base of the PS3 since the start of 2008 has increased by 98%
The console install base of the 360 since the start of 2008 has increased by just 53%”

This one made me laugh, if you take 53% of 13.4 million 360 units and 98% of 5.63 million PS3 units you get,
    7.1 million 360s
    5.5 nmillion PS3s
sounds better for Sony the way you said it lol.
(this is from October 2007 data, the nearest i could find, if you can supply me with a source for november 2007 i’ll do the math but it aint going to be much different)

“The 360’s recent sales spike is driven from a 3rd year product price cut”

Yes and didn’t PS3’s spike last year come from a price cut?
    http://uk.gamespot.com/ps3/action/heavenlysword/news.html?sid=6175529&cpage=21&prev_button=1

Both company’s have stated there will be no more price cuts for some time, they could both change this but as far as i can tell PS3 production is still costing Sony more than the 360 is MS and MS make more back in game sales from their larger user base and 8.1 attach rate.

How long now have i heard fanboys saying an PS3 exclusives are going to turn things around, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Haze, MGS4, LBP ect. none of them have set the world on fire in terms of sales, LBP was hyped to death by Sony fanboy’s as being a 360 killer and system seller, in november it was 19th in the all formats chart, December and it’s 28th, 4 places behind kung Fu Panda lol.

P.S if you’re gonna make lots of claims please link a source and preferably not from a Sony mouthpiece but even that would be better than no source at all.
