Microsoft think Sony’s Home is outdated

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has had a lot to say lately it seems. The exec’s latest comments have suggested that Sony’s Home application is outdated.

As most of you are aware by now, the open beta for Home begins today and Greenberg seems to have appropriately picked the right time to make his opinions on Home.

When speaking to Kotaku, he said ‘What Home to me feels like is Second Life for hardcore gamers. It doesn’t feel like it broadens the experience and invites people in. It feels like 2005 tech in 2008. I’m not sure that’s what people want.’

He even thinks theres a ‘huge gap’ between the quality offered by Xbox Live compared to Sony’s Home. Whether it’s just some friendly banter from him or he is being deadly seriously remains to be seen. Full story below.

So if a halo game was annouced in 2003 and was release in 2006 then isn’t that a 2003 technology game.

Please M$, get over it. You knew how successfull an avatar would be which is the reason why decided to include them in NXE.

I hate these kind of pot shot remarks, whether it’s from Microsoft or Sony or Nintendo about the competition, but in this case, I relunctantly have to agree with him about Home (to a point).

I’m still not convinced that Home is the right way forward for Sony online, although they are commited to it now, so there’s no turning back. But right now, it just doesn’t grab me, I don’t like it and I think it could be Sony’s biggest mistake so far with the PS3.

I do hope I’m wrong though, but that’s not a bad thing, since it’s Sony job to convince gamers like me that Home is all that they promised it will be. We’ll see (my fingers are crossed).

The facts speak for themselves. The Open Beta has been so successful its difficult to get in Home as literally thousands of people are clambering to get in!! as i say, the facts speak for themselves. I have been in and its great. Chat with friends or new people, deploy games from in Home. Branded spaces, exclusive trailers, create community groups, design your own personal space using media on your HDD. If you say Home is just Second Life then Facebook is just Friends Reunited, oh look how successful Facebook is!!

Of course they are, that’s to be expected, but it’s not a measure of success or quality MB. Gamers like myself have been waiting for Home for over 1.5 years now (i.e. since the official announcement), with numerous delays along the way. So when ever Home was going to be available, in whatever form, gamers would have been falling over each other to try it out.

We have to wait and see what happens. In future, Home may take off and become extremely popular amoungst PS3 gamers and therefore be the success Sony thinks it will be, or once the novelty has worn off, it may end up being the opposite of that. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m just not impressed…..yet.
