Sony Ericsson joins Google Android camp: Setback for Nokia and Microsoft

Nokia and Microsoft have received a huge setback, as cell phone maker Sony Ericsson has joined the Google Android camp. Yesterday 14 other members have joined the Open Handset Alliance (OHA); these consist of Toshiba Corporation, Omron Software Co. Ltd, AKM Semiconductor Inc., Atheros Communications, Garmin International Inc., ARM, Borqs, Softbank Mobile Corporation, ASUSTek Computer Inc., Teleca AB, and Huawei Technologies.

This news confirms that the first Google Android handset, T-Mobile G1, made by HTC must be doing well in sales figures, for other members to sign up. HTC expects to sell around 500,000 by the end of the year; the G1 was only launched in the fall of this year.

Sony Ericsson plan to launch their Android device in mid-2009, the handset maker wanted in on the action as an Android-based handset is much cheaper than those running on Nokia and Microsoft operating systems. Google Android’s future looked uncertain, but the signing of these new members has just cemented its future.
