Sky TV wants to ‘explore’ console use

Griff Parry, director of on-demand for Sky has said that the TV company is looking to use games consoles as an avenue to expand its audience base.

He said that it was an ‘interesting opportunity’ but said they might encounter some problems if they experimented with Sony’s PS3 due to DRM issues.

Parry also said that the company was looking into the possibility of porting Sky’s PC based streaming service Sky Player onto consoles. He said, ‘We have a relationship with PlayStation because we launched the PSP service (GoView) so I look at consoles, and there are a lot of them, and they are obviously connected to televisions and the internet.’

So we could be seeing our next gen consoles being able to double up as a Sky TV box, is anyone up for that? Because I am..

  1. The next step in a lot of these things is convergence – providers such as Sky produce TV and films as well as leasing bandwidth via broadband, gaming companies make games that need bandwidth. There’s a natural crossover there. Next step is tying in games & movies closer, perhaps? Thats only had mixed results so far & getting it right has proved a fine art.
