Intel’s record performance in optical communications using silicon photonics

Silicon photonics technology has shown potential for the future of high-bandwidth applications like supercomputers and this technology has suffered from performance shortcomings using CMOS techniques.

Today Intel are reporting that they have achieved record performance in optical communications using silicon photonics and this development is important thanks to the use of silicon, which is a cheap and readily available material unlike the more expensive materials used in semicondutor chips today.

Intel say this technology will be very important when used in future computers that are much more advanced and powered by many processor cores. Silicon is really important in developing high-performing optical devices and the research team that’s headed by Intel managed to create a silicon-based APD that achieves a “gain-bandwidth product” of 340 GHz.
