New Xbox 360 Game Needs 3 DVDs: PS3’s Blu-ray would do in one

Star Ocean: The Last Hope will be released soon on the Xbox 360 in North America, and Sony PS3 users will be laughing, as the game will be on 3 DVD discs. The Sony PlayStation 3 would do it on just one Blu-ray disc

Do not get me wrong, the Xbox 360 has an amazing online experience, but their DVD technology is a big problem. It’s like having a CD drive instead of DVD on PC’s by using DVD rather than Blu-ray, so why does Microsoft still use old technology.

There is a worry that as games get bigger and offer more detail, Xbox 360 games will need even more than the 3 discs that Star Ocean: The Last Hope has. We would just like to know if Xbox 360 users are happy with the old DVD format, or would that much rather games on the Blu-ray format. Please do not think that we am running the Xbox 360 down, it is still a fantastic games console, and the sales figures speak for themselves.

PS3 rules, they just had mistimed start,
sony will sooon reign the consoles market, they offer the better quality, but xbox 360 is all about hype and so called AMERICAN PRODUCT,
ever heard of RED RINGS OF DEATH? check it out asap,

Putting blu ray in the PS3 was mistimed. The PS3 couldn’t compete because it was overpriced. Not many people care to upgrade to expensive blu ray for movies even now.

The RROD was an issue with the first 360 consoles ever produced… its been years now since it was an issue.

We’ll be on to the next generation of gaming before the PS3 could possibly reach the heights of the 360s user base. The PS3 is by no means a total flop, but Sony definitely won’t be king this go around.

I have a 360 and if it’s not costing ME more money for those extra discs, then I really don’t see the drawback here. They can give me the game in 5 discs for all I care. This is an issue that Sony pointed out 2 years ago when comparing the 360 to the PS3 but nobody really cared and so 2 years later it’s funny that this article is bringing it up again, must be a slow time of the month at ProductReviews.

Wow, talk about a basic article…

  4. Matt Doherty says:

Other games, such as ‘Lost Odessey’ have 4 discs and playing through that wasn’t a problem – it takes two seconds to change the disc and then you get another good couple of hours play. It’s certainly much better than waiting 10 minutes to ‘install’ the next part of the game story (Metal Gear Solid 4), which is no doubt what will be needed on the playstation version!

I personally don’t mind games being on more than 1 disc. I am getting a bit angry with companies because they seem so afraid to go beyond one disc. Look at the big releases on the Xbox 360 and tell me how many of them are on more than one disc. Halo 3, gears 1 and 2 for example. I don’t get it. They could easily put campeign on one disc and multiplayer on the other.

Just like with metal gear solid 4. If ever released on the 360 which it wont be they could put one act on a single DVD. PS3 users have to wait for an install between every act so switching a disc on the 360 should take less time in my opinion. The only reason the PS3 has installs is because of Blu-Ray anyway. The old DVD drive on the 360 is simply faster.

However I will concede that going beyond 5 DVD’s is impractical. With 400GB blu-ray discs on the horizon blu-ray is the only way to go in the future for console gaming. The drives do need to get faster though. 1TB is not far down the road either. I do feel that games becoming as large as they are downloading is goint to be impractical unless we switch to very large capacity ssd’s, say 3TB and and the internet needs to be much faster. I say the switch to SSD’s is important because the amount some gamers use their machines they would kill a hard drive in a couple of years.

Why would it bother Xbox 360 users to use DVD’s? Is having 3 DVD’s that big of a deal? The author of the opinion piece is either a Sony fan boy or someone with absolutely no knowledge of gaming. In the fast, multiple disks have been used and have never been a problem. I remember playing Final Fantasy 7 (what many consider the best Final Fantasy game ever) and it came on a bunch of disks. That didn’t bother anyone. Many thought that it was actually a positive as it gave them more of a feeling of accomplishment when they got through one.

The PS3 can have all the Blu Ray disk space they want but since the reader is only a 2X drive, the more you put onto the disk the more of the disk that will have to be loaded onto the hard drive to ensure the game will actually run properly.

    This “article” is a joke.

you know, star ocean’s just a really really big game, dvd drives aren’t a problem yet, in fact, blu ray drives are still quite expensive, which would raise the 360’s low price

I’m totally fine with the dvd format. I get my HD movies streamed on Netflix. I’ve got my media center PC hooked up also. And if you remember, Playstation 1 had final fantasy VII on 3 discs and VIII on four. It’s not uncommon.

I’ve got a better selection of games on the 360, and five out of six of my best friends have a 360. The sixth is trading in his PS3 for a 360 after christmas.

And what about that rumour that MGS is coming to the 360? The PS3 owners can laugh all they want. I’ve got no use for bluray at this time. I can give Sony credit for creating it, manufacturing it, and making it cheaper though. They broke their shareholders backs doing it so we’ll be able to enjoy it in the next gen Xbox. :)

  9. Lee says:

Must be living in another world. This is nothing new, Lost Odyessy had 4 discs and it came out early this year. Isn’t really anything new from last gen either. Multiple games had multiple discs I don’t really think that prevented anyone from buying those games. Also, since Star Ocean 4 is exclusively coming to the 360 it’s not like there really is another option.

  10. Jay says:

Hmmmm switching a disk every 6 to 12 hours isnt a deal breaker. I would like to ask if PS3 players wish for DVD 9 because of its faster read times than games INSTALLED on the PS3 hard drive? So the 360 is a bit of a pain every 8 hours and the PS3 is a bit of a pain evey load screen. So it depends on where you look or what you choose to ignore. The Xbox 720 will put a end to the DVD 9 but maybe they will go with another format… maybe a ultra modern Nintendo type cartrage with built in memory and almost zero load times. Anything is possible when you get your mind around putting it all on one disk.
