The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit in New York
By: Peter Chubb | December 4, 2008 | Leave a CommentTens of thousands of people gathered in New York’s Manhattan plaza to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree get lit; among the crowd was survivors of Hurricane Katrina, whose home was partly built by last year’s Christmas tree.
This year’s lighting ceremony was attended by a number of star’s including Beyonce, Harry Connick Jr., Jamie Foxx and Tony Bennett. The singers entertained the thousands of people next to the eight-ton, 72-foot Norway spruce.
The tree has been decorated with 30,000 energy-efficient LED lights, which shows that America is finally thinking about the environment. The tree had five miles of wire, which all went to the top of the tree, where a 750-pound star made of 25,000 Swarovski crystals sat.
