It has been reported that Sony almost added backwards compatibility to the PS3 via a recent firmware update, but they changed their mind at the last minute.
As things stand at the moment, backwards compatibility of PS2 software is only available on the original 60GB consoles as the chip was later removed from the 40GB versions. The French website where this story originated was told though that this could still come in a future firmware update as Sony wanted to start introducing PS2 titles on its store.
Sounds like a good idea in my opinion, although I’d still prefer Sony to release some decent PS1 classics first, I mean what’s the holdup already. Let us know your thoughts on this guys.

I had a original 60 gig PS3,that played all my PS2 games just fine…Then it kicked the bucket, and I had to get a new silm PS3.Now,I’m sitting 30+ PS2 games I can’t do squat with.I only have 7 PS3 games and don’t make the money to shell out 60 bucks for PS3 games too often. My PS2 is packed up in some box,in the bowels of a storage building.I really don’t want to go digging thru all that.I’d kill to play any of my PS2 Armored Core games right now,not to mention DMC3:DA Special Edition. It was so much better than DMC4 was, gameplay wise.
