If Sony PS3 Price Cut in 2009, Will Xbox 360 be crushed?

If Sony PS3 Price Cut in 2009, Will Xbox 360 be crushed?

By: Peter Chubb | December 4, 2008 | 57 Comments

There are so many of you out there who wish that they could own a Sony PS3, but there is one thing getting in their way, the price. It is no secret that the reason why sales of the PlayStation 3 have been lower than expected is because of that high price.

The most important thing that Sony can do to help kick start PS3 sales is to introduce a price cut, but the company has always insisted that they will not reduce the price of their third-gen console. Microsoft are not stupid, they know to help keep the Xbox 360 popular is to offer a price cut.

Over the past year the Xbox 360 has seen a number of price cuts across the range, and it is that which has helped to revive the consoles strong sales figures. If Sony were to offer more prices cuts for their PS3, will the Xbox 360 be crushed?

Not if Microsoft cuts their price as well. See how that works?

  • Dave

Microsoft are too big to let one of their products that they have invested in so much fail. Even when the 360 reaches the end of its life the xbox brand will carry on strong into the next generation of consoles. But also because of the sales totals you cannot consider the 360 to be a failure anyway, even if it didnt sell another console it has been a success.

  • Chris

The problem now is not just prices, its image. If you would have asked a 100 people 8 months ago which system they would want I would say 60+ would have said PS3. This was to do with perception, people thought it was better and would have the better games at some stage ( in the next year or two). But now people realise that there is little or no difference between the two and the PS seems to be on a downward slop. As things stand MS are in such a good posistion that Sony are really need to dig deep, and I don’t think they can. On the other side of the coin MS have all the image, poeple see good games, hardcore and casual, good online and most of there friends have one so they will copy them. This is I feel the start of the end for the PS band, i feel that it is all down hill from here on in for them as low sales means low 3rd party support with in turn means lower sales…

Im a SONY supporter (fanboy is such a negative word) and I can’t believe what SONY is doing, they are dumb…They got outsold by 200,000 consoles last week, CUT THE PRICE by $50-$100 and they will sell like hot cakes.

  • harry

Gotta disagree with chris.. if sony did introduce a price cut to say £200-£250 it would cause a massive increase in sales… mainly because majority of people are waiting for the price to go down to that level of pricing. Also on your “end of the PS band”, i dont think it will bode the end of playstation as they have predicted a profit this year, which obviously wont cause an end, it causes the money for the next console from sony… Wheras Microsofts scambox continues to sell (i say this because of false advertising on TV ads)so will the playstation 3

  • Guy

I want to buy a PS3, but there is something else that comes in my way: GAMES
PS3 has many excellent games. But X360 has more excellent games.
I would rather actually buy an X360 even the PS3 price was at a lower price (and coming to think about, when you sum up the annual LIVE gold payments at some point it will) because I have no interest in a blueray player.
I care about games, and where I find better games I will invest my money.

  • Hunter

How the heck is this an article? You literally just ask the question in the title.

  • Rin D

If the PS3 cuts its price, then me, and a ton of other people, will gladly line up to buy the PS3 in all it’s blu-ray glory.

Problem is they aren’t doing that – and I would rather not money feed a company that doesn’t deserve it trying to force feed me expensive tech. If they make it affordable and to my values (a 300$ PS3 w/o sacrifice would demolish the 360, 350$ would be on par), then we’re in business… Until then I think me and the others who refuse, will teach Sony a well deserved lesson.

  • alti

How the heck is this an article? You literally just ask the question in the title.

    “that.”

  • David Macphail

If Sony cut the price will the 360 be crushed? That depends on how much they cut the price by. Once the PS3 and the 360 are roughly the same price you can expect just as big a gap in sales as there was between the Xbox and PS2, so yes, it would be game over for Microsoft (Probably Nintendo too).

However it will take a while for that to happen (Sony might be planning to cut the price in March but not by £150.00).

I think the main thing to take away here is that there is a HUGE level of difference in quality between the two consoles. Microsoft NEED a low price to stay afloat, Sony’s quality line up of games is enough to sell consoles regardless. The 360 was cheaper than the PS3 before the September price cut – yet the PS3 still sold more, if Sony are able to move so many consoles based on the quality of software alone, imagine how many they’re gonna sell if it’s also at a competitive price point!!!

The PS3 has many great games coming out next year including Killzone 2, Uncharted: Among Thieves, White Knight Chronicles, Demon Souls, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Quantum Theory and many more. If they’re smart enough to couple that with a price drop then the 360 and the Wii will be in big trouble.

To be perfectly honest though, i’m pretty sure Nintendo and Microsoft knew this from the beginning, neither company has the software to compete with the PS3 and the Playstation brand has the strongest brand recognition in the world. They’re basically fighting for second place now, waiting for the PS3 to inevitably pass them by (Providing it doesn’t lose any more exclusives).

  • Rin D

    @ David Macphail

I sure hope you’re joking about the software comment… MS/Nintendo are DEMOLISHING Sony on the software front. While you’ll probably attribute that to the number of consoles sold, I’ll attribute the lack of software as a reason the PS3 is lacking hardware sales.

Their games, even the ones that sell well… they’re just not that good. You can spin it however you like, any Sony PS3 owner is going to say, their only game for each season is AMAZING to justify their purchase to a bleeding edge game console. When that’s the issue, they’re OKAY games that are blown out of proportion to make it seem like they have a more high quality line-up. It’s an imaginary pile of AAA-titles.

Quit talking about games that simply are not out, and will not be out for awhile. That’s Sony’s advertising campaign in a summary – We WILL have games…. eventually.

Screw that man… Sony’s line up is decent at best, having the 2 or 3 “must buy” games out, which is not worth the price tag – When the 360 has arguably not as good games – but a VASTLY larger variety, to accommodate various game tastes.

  • RROD

The 360 is already being crushed, if the PS3 got a price cut the 360 would be reduced to a fine paste.

Don’t kid yourselves, the 360 doesn’t stand a chance going forward into 2009.

  • RROD

    @ Rin D

    PS3 exclusives yet to come:
    Killzone 2
    Uncharted 2
    Gran Turismo 5
    God of War 3
    White Knight Chronicles
    Final Fantasy Versus 13
Final Fantasy 13 (Exclusive in Japan, where it matters)
    Wardevil
    Team Ico’s game
    Twisted Metal
    Heavy Rain
    inFamous
    MAG
    Jak and Daxter
    L.A. Noire
    Quantum Theory
    Dark Cloud 3
    Kingdom Hearts 3
    Zone of the Enders 3
    Syphon Filter
I’d keep going, but the PS3 had the 360 beat with the first game I typed. Seriously, the 360 has nothing left but yet another Halo game. What else, Alan Wake? The game that looks dated despite being shown from the PC high spec version? Besides, since Alan Wake along with the majority of “quality” titles on the 360 are available on the PC… THEY AREN’T EXCLUSIVE YOU IDIOTS.

  • .

    @ Rin D

i, too, much disagree with you

the 360 has dwindling 3rd exclusivity support, while the ps3 has been gaining in 1st party support. what does this mean? it means much more quality exclusives for the ps3, and much fewer for the 360. what microsoft really lacks is 1st party support, and it will start to show as we get into the middle years of this generation’s life cycle. remember people, we are still at the beginning of this generation. the xbox has only been out 3 years. the ps3 2 years in the us, and 1.5 in europe. microsoft is starting to losing the exclusivity that they inherently gained by being the 1st “next gen” console on the market, and without 1st party support they are going to have trouble putting out amazing titles. that is why everyone continues to point towards the future, when you start to look at the quality of the games that are coming out, these trends become apparent

  • David Macphail

Rin D, i’m going to assume you’re mildly retarded otherwise there would be no explanation for your comments.

The PS3 has a much bigger line up of quality exclusive titles than the 360 (LBP beating Halo 3 AND Gears Of War/2 – that MUST be embarassing). Also, your point about none of the games i mentioned coming out anytime soon is WAY off – Killzone 2 is coming out in a mere 2 months, White knight Chronicles gets released THIS MONTH (In Japan, rest of the world early 2009), Demon Souls, Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain and Quantum Theory all GUARANTEED to hit sometime next year. The only game i mentioned that could POSSIBLLY slip to 2010 is Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which is a shame, because it looks far better than XIII does.

Not only does the 360 have very limited third party support (Despite them throwing millions of dollars at every developer they can find) but their first party games are poor quality and get completely overshadowed by their PS3 counterparts. Forza Motorsport/PGR can’t hold a candle to Gran Turismo in terms of sound, graphics OR gameplay (You can try and spin that anyway you like but it won’t make a difference!), Halo 3 is set to be crushed by Killzone 2, Uncharted has WAY better gameplay AND graphics than Gears Of War and if you even try comparing Fable to White Knight Chronicles then you’ll get sectioned to an insane asylum.

The 360 is appealing to consumers because it’s cheap, if the 360 was the same price as the PS3 NO – ONE would buy it, why? Because it simply doesn’t have any games (Any that are worth purchasing that is). You can attribute strong hardware sales to quality software, but if you did that you would prove that you’re a moron – do you REALLY think it’s just coincidence that 360 sales picked up IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PRICE DROP?!?

  • TheHighlander

OK, here’s the thing about prices. The price of the PS3 is still higher than those of the Wii and 360. OK. Said it. However think of this, Sony is still selling good numbers despite a considerably higher price. Wii and 360 are currently burning their way through the core game console buyers pockets. The people who will never pay more than @250 for a game console.

Sony is still selling to the $400 crowd, and as I said, with good numbers. The price cut for the 360 did one thing, it moved the 360 down market into a different segment.

Now, if the PS3 has a 10 year life cycle, we are only two years into that life. The initial price captured the early adopters, and the price cut that Sony has given moved the PS3 into the premium electronics market – the same market as HD TVs and Blu-Ray players in general. The people buying PS3 right now are primarily those with the resources to buy an HDTV, to buy BluRay movies, to buy the PS3 and it’s games. And they are buying them in good numbers.

This holiday season is seeing continued growth in BluRay sales and HDTV sales as well as a downward movement in price. HDTV and BluRay are heading towards the mainstream prices. BD movies can be had via Amazon (and mos other online retailers) for little more than the cost of the DVD versions. In 2009, HDTV will really begin to break into the mass market. That’s not to say that the same folks who will never pay more than $50 for a DVD player will invest, they won’t. However BluRay players below $200, and possibly hitting the $100-$150 range along with 32-inch LCDs for less than $500 make a compelling argument for HD going mainstream. That’s 2009.

So in year three of the 10 year life cycle, Sony could well see the core market for PS3 being those people making the shift to HD. That may not be the same crowd as those buying $199 Xbox Arcade systems, but who cares? Sony clearly has it’s strategy and is executing. I wonder how the sales of the Xbox at two years past launch looked compared to the sales of PS3 at two years after launch?

So, I don’t see Sony doing much with their price until the new year, probably spring, probably a year to the day that they last dropped prices. It will be a $100 drop (or local equivalent), and there will continue to be two SKUs. As the PS3 get’s into the sub $300 range, it’s sales will continue to grow as HDTV uptake increases. Sony may even throw in an additional $50 cut late in 2009 id BD players drop to $100. Once those BD players get into the commodity price range, the PS3 will have to compete as a game console alone, right now it still benefits from being a darned good BluRay player.

I don’t see 360 sales boosting past their current levels, nor Wii sales. Clearly those that want one are going and getting one, cutting another $50 of either would not really help their sales since thy are already selling to the base gamer market. Nor would cutting another $50 off either hurt PS3 sales since the PS3 is clearly not selling to the same people right now.

I would go as far s to say that from a marketting point of view Sony has pulled of quite a trick because they are not competing directly with either the 360 or the Wii. In a year’s time when Sony’s PS3 is sitting under $299 the 360 will still be at the $199-$299 level. But by contrast 360 sales at that time will be stead, or gently decreasing, while PS3 sales will continue to ramp as the console moves into the mass market. Sony has to be smart, and keep surfing that HDTV ‘wave’ of market adoption, but so far they’ve done a better job of that task than Microsoft.

Nintendo and the wii, is a completely different kettle of fish. It sells both to the mass market and the premium crowd, it’s lower cost appealing to one segment and it’s quirky/novelty/innovative controls appeal to the other. I don’t honestly see the Wii being hurt by the 360 price cut, or a future PS3 price cut. Much like Sony, Nintendo are executing their strategy and selling to their market.

Sony is playing a long term game and it’s risky, but right now looks like it will pay off in that long term.

  • TheHighlander

BTW, for an interesting revelation, go look at VGChartz. They have a very, very interesting chart that tracks console unit sales since launch.

PS3 is approximately 2.5 million units ahead of where the 360 was at the exact same point in it’s life cycle.

    http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php

    Interesting tool to use.

  • Rin D

    @ David Macphail

Nice, real productive. I didn’t feel too compelled to read your response without taking it with a grain of salt, since you’re obviously a militant fanboy who likes to throw insults when it comes to a console. Pathetic.

I just assumed the rest of the comment was viscous foaming from the mouth over the fact that a price drop before 2009 would mean you wasted money on a premium priced console with all “soon to come” games, while people who waited will buy the PS3 when the time comes, for cheaper, and play those games the same (and maybe even better if they make console enhancements in later editions as they have).

I, unlike you obviously, am not a fan boy. I could give two craps about MS and Sony as companies. Games/experience attract my attention, 360 offers it now – if PS3 does in the future, good for them – and I’ll get one and drop the 360 like a bad habit.

Oh, and… Lets see the PS3 sell as many consoles w/o the blu-ray player at a more affordable price point. Or if a 360 with a blu-ray player would outsell the PS3 at 400$ – not “if the 360 was the same price as the PS3 NO – ONE would buy it” The blu-ray is the X factor and you leave it out completely.

That – is a retarded argument – although, I won’t stoop as low as you to apply the integrity of your opinions to the integrity of your personality.

    @ RROD

Nice list, of YET TO COME games. I’m sick of this list, I knew of it 2 years ago too, announced in what… 2007? and I still don’t see these games. Albeit it’s a spectacular list, this is exactly what I was talking about, and you’ve officially confirmed it for me. Congratulations.

When those come out, that’s a different situation. When is the question though.

    @ TheHighlander

Great post, I agree with everything you wrote. I think the 360 is reaching the end of it’s tenure as a hardcore gaming console, which explains all of the new main-stream stuff being released. They’re trying to stretch out it’s existence since it has limited technology.

If the 360 went the Wii path, it’d be dead to me, because it’s not my style. Then I’d hope that PS3 didn’t follow as well with that crap and I’d be on board.

So guys, relax – it’s a game console, these are all game consoles. We’ll be alright, no matter what happens to the companies here. Stop getting all up at arms over this crap just because someone hates on your precious console. Sheesh.

  • Rin D

    @ RROD

In addition, you assumed I care about 360′s exclusives to come up. Not really… I don’t really salivate over games to come like you guys do. Maybe if I could play them now, it’d be a different story.

  • David Macphail

Rin D, very intelligent, you made a response to my comment without even READING it, what a clever little person you are!

If you’d had the brains to read what other people are saying BEFORE you reply to them you’d actually notice that i was making a valid counter – argument to your idiotic comments about the PS3′s games being far from release. However, i guess fanboys like you have a tendency to tell me how great their consoles are without even bothering to read what i’m trying to get across.

If i WAS a militant fanboy then i would have said something like “The Xbox 360 is an RROD’ing piece of garbage that doesn’t have the neccessary software quality to allow it to sell over the £250.00 price point.”. Unfortunately, not only would that make me a fanboy, it would also make me RIGHT!

Your comments about Blu – Ray also prove your ignorance to the gaming industry (Or maybe they’re just the result of you not reading my post properly, who knows?). You said you’d like to see Sony sell more PS3′s without the Blu – Ray player??? THAT is a retarded argument, which proves my earlier theory about you, the PS3 uses the Blu – Ray player for it’s GAMES you genious! Without the Blu – Ray player the PS3 wouldn’t have any games to work on it, so obviously nobody would buy it! Don’t you know ANYTHING about the videogame industry?

If i were to stoop to your level of stupidity i would challenge Microsoft to sell as many 360′s without the DVD drive………….but i’m above idiotic fanboy “Daring” contests. Anyway, you did a good job of proving my earlier point, congratulations.

Also i like how you mention the PS3′s excellent list of YET TO COME games, how many games does the 360 have announced for next year??? 3???

  • Richballer

eventually yes because if ps3 was some how to drop about $250-$300 Microsoft has no way to go which crushes there product and if they lower there prices then that means there retarded cause now they are loosing serious money and the only way to do this is to maintain its price and through in a free game

  • Andrew

I want to by a gaming system for myself. I dont want to invest in Wii.Graphics are subpar. Xbox is cheeper. PS3 has Blue-Ray. However, I dont want to shell out all that money for PS3.

  • Dave

if its a gaming system you want then buy an xbox, no matter what people say about the ps3 games coming out soon, its still playing catch up and that is the truth whether people like it or not. Plus its cheaper by a mile.

  • http://gamerpawner Hardcore gamer

Wil it crush 360? Not sure if i can see that far ahead. I will say this much, if Sony sticks to their guns and comes out with quality titles over the next 2 years i have predicted from last year Sony will be ahead of all systems by mid 2010. Not like i am collecting a check from Sony, just i like the games they have giving me over the past …..ohhh 14 or 15 years. With that being said to date Microsoft has lost a total of 8 billion dollars between the Xbox and Xbox 360. Now rule of business for you people wo choose to not use the lef tand right side of your noggin. Any company that has consistent staggering loses in those number over any time, will eventually have to pull plug on that particular project. Now because it is Microsoft people tend to believe that they have this unlimited amount of wealth {it is great but not unlimited}. You rush release a new console without solving the issues your prior system had. Hence the red circle of death. The price cut is a desperation move by Sony. You realize Sony nor Nintendo have decreased their prices for the holiday season. U must think long term, Microsoft thinks for 6 months. Sony on the other hand thinks ahead 5-10 years down the road. I owned all 3 systems,Wii ,360 and PS3. Sold the Wii as it does not cater to me{the hardcore gamer}. Microsoft is already making preparations for the development of what is suppose to be the Xbox 720. {They have a few other names ont he table i like better personally} This is just after 3 years of the release of yet another system that is tanking. Time will tell. Longevity and consistency is what i look for in a gaming system. Nintendo, SNES and Sony PS are timeless systems that have set a bar and standard so high it is almost impossible for them to eclipse. I really hope Wii starts re-vamping old titles. Cuz this hoop la over creating games for the casual gamer doesn’t make sense. You are an adult longer than u are a kid. I have 2 cousins right now bored out of they wit of Wii but my aunt says they have to be a little older to buy that system.

  • Robert

The Playstation 3 trumps the Xbox in every respect. Financially speaking, the PS3 is certainly more expensive. However, you don’t have to pay for online gaming (xbox pays for online gaming yet still has to deal with advertisements) and once your warranty runs out, you don’t have to fear a “ring of death.” Why is that still a problem anyway lol

In terms of exclusive games, PS3 easily trumps the Xbox with hits like metal gear solid, Final Fantasy XIII versus, resistance, the upcoming sequel to Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry, and a host of classic platformers like Jak and Daxter. The exclusives for the xbox like fable and gears of war and halo are all just imitation alien shooters that get old and repetitive, keeping in mind that there are games like Perfect Dark that are worthwhile. Those games are only good for online play, which would be fine if it weren’t for the fact that xbox’s fan base are all illiterate, racist morons who ruin your online experience.

Graphically speaking, the xbox seems to be doing better when comparing cross-console games, but the hardware capabilities of the PS3 can’t be ignored. Once developers learn how to use it, the PS3 will catch up. Also, no one in their right minds goes to games simply to scrutinize the resolution features of inanimate background art anyway. They all look the same to me. In addition, Sony added some neat stuff like Blu-ray players and a complete library of porn.

My only complaint is that the PS3 no longer has backwards compatibility, but who gives a crap when I have the systems necessary to play my old games. Now, I’ve been making this decision for a while because I have no money so at the end of everything, I can say that I am right and you are inevitably wrong

O, and as a qualification, no one gives a (I CUSSED) about the wii (hyperbole).

  • XboxFansDontBeStupid

    Guys, don’t be so stupid.
For the ones saying ‘Blu-Ray is a waste’ and then continuing with ‘I only care about games’ then if you care about games that much then PS3 it is.
If we have a look, the Xbox360 HD-DVD Dual Layered holds 8GB. Impressive for a disc, huh?
Look at the PS3. 50GB. GTA IV wouldn’t be a completed fail if Microsoft weren’t being fags and stole GTA. GTA would’ve gotten GOTY because of its quality, not because of its popularity.
Let’s just look it at this way :
Developers are still getting the hang of the PS3 and they’re getting through it. Look at Uncharted 2 and God of War 3. They’ll be groundbreaking titles.
Also, Sony are always 2 steps ahead of themselves. Backwards compatibility will come back one day via firmware and in 2010, PS3 will have 2nd place of the console war because it will be really cheap and devs would’ve gotten used to the PS3.

  • Carlos

Right now you till january 31st 2009 you can get the 80gb ps3 for $250. Search for the Playstation VISA offer. This offer helped me make my mind.

  • BlaBla123

    @ David Macphail

i would BARELY consider buying a ps3 if it was lower in price than the xbox 360 due to a few reasons:

1.most of my friends have an xbox 360 so if i got a ps3 i couldn’t play with them
2.considering most of my friend have a 360 that means i will have 2 continue buying games for the 360 (yes that includes multiplatform games) if i want 2 play with them
3.i just plain dont like the ps3 controller
    4.ps3 is way overhyped
5.i dont give a damn about blu-ray i really dont 2 tell u the truth if DVD or HD DVD beat bluray i wouldnt give a damn, i mean sure it has more memory but so what? that would just make a game so long it would be boring (don’t tell me thats wrong cause you know its true)
    6. ive never been a fan of playstations i was getting Nintendo consoles before the Xbox and after i played the Xbox a bunch at a cousins i knew i had to get the 360 (ive played ps2 a bunch at friends and i HATED it, it was go GAY) and so far ive been right

BTW- final fantasy is A GAY GAME (it REALLY is)

  • XboxFansDontBeStupid

    @BlaBla123

You sound like a true Microsoft fan boy.

And no, the longer the game the better. We know it won’t be boring and YOU know that too.

I’d like to spend money on a game that can entertain me for a long time than paying for some game which will last under 10 hours.

  • Snozzle

    HELLZ NO!!!!

Please, has the 360 price drops helped it beat the Wii’s record sales?!?! The 360 A is now the cheapest console and it has been since Sept. 08 yet they still get outsold over 2 to 1 by Nintendo. Sony’s financial outlook isn’t going to allow them to lower the price of the PS3 because they still loser money on every sale. Sony was banking on the digital TV changeover in ‘09 to increase sales but HDTV sales are in the toilet. The only way Sony will increase sales is by selling Nintendo products!

  • spirit

this generation of “console wars” has never been more interesting. I’m in the uk and personally have sold my 360 for the PS3 but i’m certainly not any type of fanboy. I’m a gamer pure and simple. if MS release a better console in a years time i’ll ditch Sony. Sony badly needs a price cut to keep in this race. without doubt the PS3 exclusives released in the last 12 months have been incredible, Resistance 2, LBP, MGS4. and with up and coming titles like GT5, Killzone, God Of War. I’m certainly not worried about “lack of games” what does worry me greatly is Sony NEEDS a certain amount of consoles sold. remember sony loses money for every console it sells. it only makes money from game liceneces. sony certainly doesnt seem to be advertising it’s “flagship” very well at the moment. combine that with the looming international recession and it’s not a good idea to have the most expensive product on the shelf with the poorest advertising. so to finally answer the question. I think sony NEEDS to cut the price of the PS3 but not to “crush” the 360 but just to stay in the market !

  • http://norfolkblogger.blogspot.com Nich Starling – Norfolk Blogger

The problem is that PS3 games are virtually identical to XB360 games, so people are not going to buy a PS3 over an XB just for games unless they are a real techie geek or just desperate or Little Big Planet, and that is an expensive purchase for just one game.

So then Sony fall back on the fact that the PS3 was marketed by them as a Blu-Ray player, but you can now get a Blu-Ray disk player for 50% less than a PS3, so its other main selling point has gone.

PS3 is holed beneath the water and the longer Sony take to drop the price, the more water will be taken on.

honestly for the current price of the ps3, you get more out of your dollar than you would buying the xbox 360. xbox 360 does not even offer free online gamplay while the ps3 does. the ps3 has a blue ray player which will be the future entertainment format in a few years rendering the dvd obsolete.
many people say that the xbox 360 has better graphics and there are many comparisons out there on the web. truth of the matter is that no game out there has even come close to tapping into the ps3′s full potential. the capabilities of the ps3 is far greater than the xbox and within time, developers will begin to utilize more of the ps3′s capabilities. the xbox 360 does have a marginal graphics advantage right now but just imagine when the ps3′s capabilities are used. so what does all this mean? that with the ever advancements in technology and media, the ps3 will suit the advancements in graphics and movies while the xbox 360 will be obsolete. but if you want to save 100 bucks for all this then go ahead and buy a 360 from a company that is profit orientated and not consumer orientated.

“Pachecs” cleary need to move to japan…profit oriented and not consumer oriented…look at da damn price for a ps3…dere da wun making money from the US while were in a economic melt down…Microsoft cut dere 360 in all levels by $100+….Sony is not going to cut dere prices…try investing in ur own country…

  • Steve

M$ would have expected a greater than 8% increase for the 360, taking into account the huge discount on the console, the release of Jasper to finally stop the thing sounding like it’s going to take off, the release of their last remaining AAA exclusives and their move to be Wii 2. The fact they’ve let Greenberg out of his box again suggests M$ are concerned their sales weren’t higher in that “all important holiday season” and about how 2009 is going to turn out. Sony will no doubt cut the price of the PS3 again by the end of Q1 and, with their 2009 games line-up, then we’ll see what happens.

The Bush Family + Presidency = War = A rocky economy.

Dumb asses got Bush in office, and dumb asses have to accept the truth that he messed things up. Maybe a few more people would have been able to afford the PS3 if that doofus didn’t get into the white house and run a muck. Now payings bills and eating are the only things money should be spent on because they are needed for nurishment and shelter.

Microsoft did the SMART thing and lowered their price, while Sony thought that their PS1 and PS2 reign would come again for the third. It doesn’t work when you aren’t willing to acknowledge the fact that a struggling family will not be able to afford such an expensive game system.

At this point, game companies acknowledge that sales are too sluggish for the PS3 to give it so many exclusive titles. Its obvious, and I wouldn’t either, you have more chance of sales on a cheaper systems as far as titles are concerned, then a system that initially broke the bank. The buyer probably couldn’t bounce back as quickly to such a big purchase.

haha good one David. I agree with u. The 360 is going to bow to the PS3 very soon. Instead of fine tuning and making there console better they just quickly released it. Don’t get me wrong I would still buy it but I’m waiting for the PS3 to come down in price because I would rather spend my cash on a premium console then just a quick release lets get as much money as possible console. Sure the 360 has some good games but not nearly as good as the ps3 line up and the blue-ray has only been out for a while and most game industries havn’t unlocked the full potential of the space and capabilities. for example look at the quality of games when the PS2 first came out and look at them now. there way more graphical.

To answer your articles question, NO the PS3 will have to be content in third place. Another thing to mention is that when you ask “IF Sony cuts PS3 price in 2009?”, it is a huge “IF” when you consider the massive profit loss for Sony there has been this year, which is down 95%. (Last I heard it was something like 1.1 billion dollars) So how is a company already in financial trouble going to swallow that much more of a loss from PS3 manufacturing? They are still losing close to $300 on each PS3 made at the current price. They really don’t even have that option at this time, if they want to avoid all their shareholders unloading their stock.

I almost feel bad for the company considering how hard they tried this holiday season only to still be coming up short behind MS, and Nintendo. They have already splurged almost all their mentionable exclusives(minus God of War 3), and they sold even less consoles then last holiday when they barely had any premium titles. Sony threw a hail mary only to have it intercepted.

Another big problem is that they were relying on being the economy Blu-Ray player as a lifeline, but now you can get a decent one at half the price of a PS3. There are quite a few problems building for Sony, and unless they start really hustling things are going to get bleak. However, what do you expect from a company that was up until now mainly surviving off the PS2. Nintendo has won back the casual gaming market, while MS is picking up the Hardcore gamers who feel betrayed.

As a company Sony will survive, they might be lost, but they aren’t complete fools. I think if things keep up this way they will need a massive reboot, returning to their roots in home electronics. It is their own fault for becoming so reliant on the videogame market, while not keeping their ears to the ground. However, the PS3 might be their last console for quite a while. Them speculating on a “10 year lifespan” was not solely because they believed the technology would last, but also because they realized it would be that long before they could afford another console launch.

I keep coming across rather humorous comments blabbering about the PS4 being in the “pipe line”, but I think the better term is “pipe dream”. It’s funny when misguided fanboys say stuff like that when on the same site there are articles about how hard Sony is being hit financially right now. It’s crazy how drastically the console market has changed over the past 5 years, but anyone paying attention most likely recognized the signs. Obviously Sony did not realize, or even speculate that consumers’ budgets would be so tight for the foreseeable future. By not planning ahead, and releasing a beast of a console with the highest price tag they asked for it. Lying about the system specs, non-user friendly developer kits, and contradictory hardware did not help either.

Look guys do yourselves, and your bank accounts a favor, if you really want a PS3 buy one used.

Honestly, i don’t think the playstation 3 should go any lower on the price. I recently bought a brand new 80gb playstation 3 from Dell online because i know that they will not get a price cut for atleast another 1 year to 1.5 years.

  • Cinoy

Honestly, i don\’t think ps3 should have a price cut. I recently bought a brand new ps3 80gb from dell online because i know sony will not cut the price simply because the system itself is at its actual value. The technology that the system consists of is incredible, and no doubt it is faster than 90% of all home computers and also it has blu-ray. I am feeling right now that even 400$ is quite cheap for such a system. If the price goes down then PSN will be filled with a bunch of retarded 10 year olds just like on xbox live.

  • JOHN

In a way i agree with ‘guy’ in the not caring about bluray players, I have so many DVD’s putting the cost of them together could buy me a PS3. they should cut the price because i only know three people with PS3′s and seven people with xbox’s and most of the people with xbox’s also have wii’s which are also beating down PS3. i think that the only reason that wii and 360 are selling well are because of PS3 price, playstation is a classic, every one liked the PS2 and for playstationto go out of business would be extremely bad. Also the credit crunch isn’t exactly helping playstation in sales, PS3 40gb is 299.99 and 360 20gb is 109.99, HUGE difference, and the with expansion packs of GTA IV on 360 is showing that 360 can afford to do a exclusive thing with RockStar it is showing that it is kicking ass in sales. i personly think that plsystation should cut by £50 or even £100 if things get tough.

  • jackmack

I know I’m late here, but that’s not entirely true. I love playstation and that’s the bottom line but I bought my kids an Xbox. The graphics and the online play was so powerful I’m considering one for myself. Wii is a whole different monster as it is attacking from the family mid-section (exercise-strong interaction). I think Playstation (my fav) has a big fight on their hands and a price cut would only help them mantain in a dying market. Sure it would concrete their stay if it is big enough but by no means will it crush the other two. The high price tag allowed the other two to creep into 3′s fan base only to find that these machines are strong competitors. Xbox with the best graphics and Wii with the most appeal.

  • Haseo

Dun really think that PS3 price is going down anytime soon.Though PS3 do have the potential ,i am sad to say that in its current state and is unable to surpass Xbox360.Price,less variety of games and late releasing of games might be factors to its downfall. At this rate not even blueray is going to salvage the situation and its exclusive games might turn their backs on PS3 and go to xbox360 instead(game developers have no loyalty mind u only profits).

  • badb0y

The thing is, PS3 exclusives coming out are first party games (Made by Sony) so Sony won’t hop the boat on it’s own product.

As for the price cut, it will probably come around holidays to up sales and then follow through into next year.

Considering how the PS3 is doing right now, it’s actually quite good considering the Xbox 360 sales 2-3 years into it’s release.

  • Anthony

It’s not only about prices, it’s also about games. For instance, this year Uncharted 2, a new Ratchet, and God of War 3 are set for release. Any one of those games can get a few PS3′s sold, and if they added a price cut on top of that, then they could do some serious damage. I mean, they are only trailing MS by about 8 million units, far less than what they were trailing them a year ago, and its because of titles like MGS4 and LBP. With TWO FF titles coming to PS3 next year, that makes it even more of a buy. Yes, one of those two is coming to 360, but PS3 is such a superior console, more people would want it on there, plus they would want Versus 13 as well. Therefore, thos games, plus a price cut, and 360 is in 3rd.

  • Fishy

Guy, you most be a little on the slow side or living under a rock. what games are you talking about that hasn’t come for the ps3 aswell? its only gears of war and halo that is xbox360 only, while ps3 have MGS4, killzone 2, infamous, LBP and so on. so i cant see what your talking about unless your a hardcore fangirl for halo and gears.

  • Kendall

its like a new game called mag coming out so people might just buy a ps3 for that game,

  • james

Pricecut or not fact still remains ps3 still blows compared to 360, xbox owned ps2 and 360 has already taken the ps3 down. Jus accept it

  • person

Mass Effect, Fable II, Left 4 Dead, Forza 2, Saints Row, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Shadowrun, and the list goes on

  • Luke

Saints Row 2 was for PS3 you douche.
And to be fair L4D is a port from PC, and lags like shit on the xbox360.

  • Ronak

Fishy, in know that ps3 is way better than 360 but some games like ben 10 alien force vilgax attacks is not going to release in ps3 but im ps3 fan and wish ps3 price cuts down.

  • mike

L4D lags if you’re a douche that can’t afford a decent internet connection. i’ve never had a problem with L4D or any game for that matter on XBL

  • Spade

It’s funny how Sony just did the pirce cut.
