Nokia N97 Specs, Price and Release Date

Nokia N97 Specs, Price and Release Date

By: Peter Chubb | December 2, 2008 | 80 Comments

Nokia now has a new flagship cell phone, the Nokia N97. We now have all the details, from specs, price and that all important release date. The new N97 has a 5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel screen, giving you an aspect ratio of 16:9. Did we forget to mention that the display is also touchscreen.

The screen has tactile feedback, as well as a sliding QWERTY keyboard, giving you the best of both worlds. Nokia have made a big statement about the N97, saying that it is the “world’s most advanced mobile computer.”

So let’s see if the specs can back up this claim, 32GB of onboard memory, as well as a microSD expansion, up to 48GB, that puts the iPhone to shame then. The phone also features HSDPA, WiFi and 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss glass. The Nokia will launch in H1 2009, and will cost around €550 ($693).

    Ship it to me now!

  • NokiaFan

I have loved using my N95 the past 2 years. The N97 comes just in time for my upgrade – looking at the specs, it’s really impressive (although pricey).

My only gripe about Nokia “mobile computers” is that their processors are too slow to make them really useful and productive. Perhaps Nokia got it right with the N97…

  • bob

its not a 5 inch display, its more like 3.5 .

    i want 1

  • Gauss

It better hav at least a 500MHz processor with 3D hardware accelerated support and 256 of RAM or….. oh well

  • Celz

Yea it better be pushin 500mhz, and 256mb ram with some 3d accel on top. Because the 3.5 in screen and 5mp camera is lovely and so is the 32gb on board but lets be real none of those are POWER. Those are all FEATURES… My sprint touch pro has what 433mhz, 288mb ram, 3.2 mp (not by carl), 16gb mem card, and a 2.8in screen.. To beat that a nicer screen, more storage, and a better camera wont cut it.. That will make it a better multimedia device.. But honestly it will need about the power of a G1 to beat a win mo device. Win Mo devices have to be more powerful to equal all of the smartphone os’ out there…. But to really lay claim to being the most powerful it will have to at least beat the G1 and Iphone and at least come close to an HTC touch flo 3d phone.. because I really doubt an Iphone, G1, Storm, Bold or anyone else could run win mo with touch flo 3D on top smoothly

  • nailah

    i NEED this thing!!!!

  • zrc

yeah… features r just 4 show off…. but the game lies in techno power and capability… can we trust the new N97 to defeat iphone or better still stand win mo??????

  • MoFFo

hey this sounds and looks amazing i wanna know how much it will be in the uk im looking forward to havig the chance to get it in white!!!

    thanks for the info!!

  • Luce

I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!! Was going to get the N96 at upgrade time but think i’ll just hold off till this is released!!

  • Gauss

To Luce: You probably are going to be wating forever with that mind!

When this thing becomes released probably there would be another revision for the N96 with more RAM and 3D acceleration or maybe it would be just an announcement as well as maybe something else that would catch your eye and you are going to keep waiting lol!

You know…. I was ready to buy an N85, but I was disappointed by the fact that has poor RAM and no 3D accelerartion. So I decided to get an N82, which is already fully revised by a lot of people, so you know before buying that it’s a good deal, because you can read about its GPS and camera performance, etc. Also, to know that I would be able to add a 32GB microSD card to the phone the next year make me thought would be enough and decided to don’t think twice!

Anyway… if I change my mind I would sell it and get a newer revision of the N85 if it gets xenon, more RAM, 3D acceleration and a pointing device similar to that one on the Innov8, that would be what I really want! The N97 is overkill for my everyday necessities and big enough to not like it. If I ever need a touchscreen device to watch widescreen content, it better have also good gaming performance, that would include a better pointing device than that one the N97 has with 5-way keys, in other words, another device, not precisely my cellphone.

  • pedro

seem’s nice, i have the n95 and it served me well. this just might be a release for uk and then of course there we’ll be three more releases with updated specs more features. Till then i’ll just hold on to my cash before i shell out another 800 bucks again.

  • Savio

What’s the use of having the world’s best mobile computer if it doesn’t have MS Windows Mobile? How productive can you be with other mobile office software. I dont think the N97 will be good enough for serious business users. It’s good for people who have a lot of time to spare with gaming & multimedia

  • cody

windows mobile has NO WHERE NEAR the amount of capabilities as symbian 60 has. its so customizable, its not even funny. Windows mobile is so slow too. even if the phone has a decent processor, it doesnt compare to nokia’s software.

  • pedro

i can agree with cody i’ve was capable of putting large amounts of apps. that i used from day to day and since then i’ve never loved a piece of equipment as much as i do now. see i produce music and i’ve got this app. in which i can use my phone as a beat machine and i love it till death especially if i have an idea in my head and i need to do a quick lay down. also with symbian they upgrade their firmware every 4 months or so.

  • anonimous

to be honest 6.35 dollars that is alot of money. I WONT IT NOW AND I HOPE I CAN GET IT FOR MY BIRTHDAY IT IS A AWSOME PHONE AND I BELIEVE THAT IT IS BETTER THAN THE IPHONE……………………YAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYAY

  • sonny

when is the release date. i want it so bad ;p

  • http://n97 jhon

This is only the start of nokia big releases for 2009. Buy the end of the year well be seeing phones that will be exceeding well over 64gb aswell as expandable sd cards so come this time next year were will the i phone / storm stand

  • Omar

I Like It !! i need to have 1…i used to have n95..then n95 8gb..and now n96..i guess the 4th one will be the n97..hope that nokia won’t miss any great features..like increasing battery life so it would be like the n95 8gb or better..but i think that this phone will (i hope not) include a problem in this phone,,,maybe some slow interface or frequent freezing…

  • Beib

Yeah .. a nicey gadget, but a pricey stuff .. THE MORE FEATURES IN IT, THE MORE TROUBLES . .. The E-90 which I used for 6 months starting to scream freakly . does anybody have this e90 speaker prblm? Hopefully not in N97 …. wil see !!

  • KOTR

I have to agree with celz on this one. if the n97 has power like he mentioned then there wont be a phone in the world that can touch it. i have an iphone and honestly i love it but ive done my research on gsmarena like any phone fanatic should, and the n97 will be the hottest phone out when released. Im even going as far as using my income tax check to get the phone. But any phone fanatic should know that phones constantly change as technology changes and that the only way to really tell if a phone is really good and better than another phone is by actually using it yourself. Different people use different phones and brands to suit their needs or wants in a phone. thats why you have your nokias, apples, sony ericssons, iphones, g1s, n97s, and etc;. I guess we’ll all find out when its released. 1 thing is for sure though no matter anybody says: IM GETTING ME A NOKIA N97!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CraigS

Why can’t any of these guys at the top end of the phone market introduce a high end phone with all the features, AND with dual sim ? I am sick and tired of having to carry around two phones. Samsung has one, but no WLAN. While on the subject, why can’t these guys get together and come up with a solution to have the same charger plug. Even Nokia keeps changing theirs and my latest Nokia charger doesn’t work with the previous phone – which I still use.

  • KOTR

Well CraigS the answer to your question or questions is very simple. I’m quite sure they’ve discussed it, but think about it. If Nokia, Apple and Samsung or any phone company for that matter came together and made a phone with every feature possible then that would more than likely than not end the phone competition around the world and that would be the end of the phone manufacturing business, because they would all go out of business for the simple fact that if that were to happen, although that phone would be very expensive to get your hands, we would still buy it because it has every feature possible and although it would be an hell of an investment and there would be no reason to make another phone. Like if they were to continue making phones after this “every possible feature phone” nobody in the world would buy it. For what? This phone has all you need while on the other hand the others dont and they would be of no use to us. Why? Because this phone has every feature possible. The end result is that the phone manufactuers go out of business because noone is buying anymore of their phones because of this particular phone. Now people are out of jobs and well its a dominoe affect after that. The same with a vehicle. If a company produces a engine that lasts forever then why would you buy another vehicle? You wouldnt. Thats why they have all these parts and tune-ups and etc;. And that why Nokia keeps changing its chargers. So customers like CraigS can continue to spend the extra money on a new charger everytime a new phone comes out and you buy it. I know it was lengthy but I had to make a point: ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO ‘ROUND.

  • NokiaUserSinceCellPhoneStarted

What the… I read some people talks about that microsoft mobile..??hey if you want a faster productive stuff… use a laptop… ir buy a personal desktop computer and buy the most ram, best motherboard, processor and etc. etc… don’t blame nokia about it… the cellphone is needs more of these and that… they can actually make a laptop into a cellphone or handheld… but the price will soar high up in the sky because of thetop end products… then you complain about it then…. etc etc.. bllah blah blah…

  • popwar

its rumored of it have the arm11 326mhz processor but overclocked with a ti omap3 chipset at 800mhz. this would own so much if it had a 1ghz processor . hell even 800. better than the iphone which has a 600 sumtin processor. it has really good gaming gfx for a phone, i read that its as powerfull as the sega dreamcast when it comes to shelling out gfx power. hope the n97 is better. and with a 1700/2100mhz us 3g band.

  • KOTR

Excuse me “Mr.NokiaUserSinceCellPhoneStarted “, but learn how to fucking type and talk before you start talking shit over the internet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • arbi

bull it has only 3.5 ‘ screen which is still awesome ! But i was expecting the camera to be 8 or smth Mp cuz Samsung and LG already have put touch phones with 8 Mp Renoir and Pixon !!!! But i think this phone will be awesome because of the memory and in the end it is a NOKIA!!!!!

  • pankaj verma

  • shams

    I need this.How can I buy

  • Muarrif

I am impressed by this phone. I previously had Nokia N95 and it did not disappoint. I am currently using Nokia E71 and upgrading to N97 will give me best of both. Looking forward to release. My only concern is the flip up screen and how well Nokia build this.

  • Jason

Considering the fact that windows platforms always take more power just to run the os, saying that windows devices are better by default because they have more power would be inaccurate. They need the extra power just to run the os at the same level as the other platforms…

  • arslan

    what is price

  • Veric

hey I have heard that n97 supports ngage and ovi.

This results in cool gaming fun………

  • flick

the nokia n97 will have a crappy arm11 processor!! they failed again!!

  • Nokia Lover

Its cheaper than the N96 when it first came out!!!

  • Anonymous

this phone is a letdown … n95 is still best Nokia ever … n82,N85 etc just built on the existing n95 with more ram, xenon flash, etc
this phone has approx just under 300 mhz cpu … no 3d chip …. stil 5mp cam …. only impovemtn is touch screen and storage ….. Nokia is ripping us off …. this is not a flagship phone …

  • http://gk1world.com ex-iphonelover

I already got an E75 just recently. I’m so sorry I didn’t hold off for this… :( How I wish I could get someone to trade with me. I wonder how much cash I have to add to my E75 to get this glorious N97????

  • Jay

Its not really about the processors speed. Its how its used. HTC brags about its 500mhz+ processors but they’re useless when the operating system hold it back. So you have to look at it as a whole. not just the impressive numbers on the processors.

  • Ollie

    LOL! Owned!

  • cytek1

I have never been impressed with these “computer phones”. They are overpriced piece of hardware crap that the average consumer will not pay the money for. Sure, they are fun to mess around with, full of goodies and new features but so what, I will stick with my regular old cell phone that works just fine when I need to make a phone call, take a pic. or access the net sometimes. Ridiculous and just like a lot of other related hardware, something will come a long and replace it for 1/4 or 1/3 the price soon enough, it happens every time. Blah.

  • JOHN

does anyone know date of release in uk

  • nafiadiba

Its simple english. Not greek or Hebrew. You may go to school……

  • silva

nice phone but when it going to release in asia market. better reduce the price selling will double than expect……

  • http://razew.com dacook

Roflmao people its a phone so it doesn’t really matter if he has a camera or hdd or you can play games on it,
I hope you remember the times when the phone was only meant to call people and nothing else i am still using a old nokia and nothing else you all should go out and have some free time for a change no offence lol.

It’s such a nice weather outside to spent with your girlfriend or wife and kidz you can also visit your parents or go to a nice vacation and it won’t cost you that much as this phone or even better stay home and relax and keep the money for bad days.

  • Luke

I want the new n97. Can somebody give me one for free? lolz! I’ll do anything.. haha

  • hooooy

he said geek not greek. lol

  • akram

I am a very latecomer. Just to say I learnt a lot and enjoyed the exchanges. As for the phone think I will wait for the improved version.

  • ahmed

sorry to disappoint but the processor is around 440mhz.

  • manu

    very beautiful phone

  • gaurav kataria

Friends for me this phone is not upto the mark. For businessman this n97 is totally no no. since it don`t let you use quickoffice .so u cann`t even open word and excel files forget about editing them. u cann`t purchase quickoffice since its not available anywhere. Secondly, it get hang again & again even the latest version .Thirdly, it doesn`t connect on bsnl wi-fi. When i enquired on nokia toll free no. they surprised me by saying that n97 cann`t be connected through wi-fi.Even the service center people do not know anything. I feel betrayed.

  • Austin

A couple of years later and we now know that this phone sucks intensly. It's slow, buggy and the camera lid and slide knob easily break off. Nokia should be ashamed of themselves!

  • Hitesh

Whats the price of this N97 in USA

  • majid

what is price nokia n97 and n98
