Full HD (1080p) video on cell phones thanks to Renesas
By: Peter Chubb | December 2, 2008 | Leave a CommentWe first learned about Full HD (1080p) video for cell phones back in May, but Renesas Technology are all set to show off their application processor at ISSCC 2009, which will take place in San Francisco, California, from Feb 8 to 12, 2009.
This new processor will allow cell phones to process Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 resolution videos, at 30 frames-per-second. The core of the Renesas processor will have a maximum operating frequency of 500MHz. The application processor will support a number of video formats, MPEG-4 AVC / H.264, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
As yet there is no word as to when the 6.4- x 6.5-millimeter chip will be released, but we should know more once Renesas Technology has showed the device of at ISSCC 2009. It seems that phone technology is now moving at a faster pace than that of computers for the home.
