Facebook wins $873 million against Canadian spammer
By: Peter Chubb | November 26, 2008 | Leave a CommentFacebook is happy in the knowledge that they have won $873 million in damages against a Canadian man who sent 4 million spam emails to the users of the social network. Facebook should not open the Champagne just yet, as spammer Adam Guerbuez of Montreal, has not been found.
This means that he will not be able to pay the $873 million fine, but it is hoped that this judgment will deter future spammers from doing the same thing. Guerbuez had managed to acquire Facebook emails through a number of phishing techniques.
In the emails members of the social network site saw ads for penis enlargements as well as other similar products. Although there is a huge amount of resources for eradicating spam, the technology that is currently available will not fully remove the risk of spam on Facebook.
