Hands on with iPhone 2.2 update: what a nightmare

Hands on with iPhone 2.2 update: what a nightmare

By: Peter Chubb | November 21, 2008 | 8 Comments

We mentioned in an earlier post that a new update for the Apple iPhone was available; the new 2.2 update has a number of enhancements to help speed thing s up a bit. We reported that a handful of people had experienced some problems, but thought I would still download and install the update, well I thought that as it was only a handful of people reporting problems, it was worth the risk.

The first thing I had to do was download and install iTunes 8.0.2 update, that went smoothly, so then proceeded to download and install iPhone 2.2 update. The update was 246MB, but did not take long at all.

Once the firmware had downloaded it then started to install on to my iPhone, it took about 5 minutes, after which my phone then restarted itself. My iPhone then started back up but asked to be connected to iTunes as my handset would only make emergency calls.

The funny thing is, my iPhone was connected to iTunes, I disconnected my phone and reconnected, still nothing. I then closed iTunes and tried to open the program up again, to my surprise iTunes would not open, it said that there was a problem with QuickTime, and directed me to a help page.

I was advised to uninstall Quick Time and then go direct to the QuickTime download page, which I did. So with QuickTime now reinstalled I proceeded to open iTunes once more, thankfully it opened up. The next thing was to connect my iPhone, which I did, the iPhone managed to sync with iTunes, but the handset was still stuck on emergency calls only, I started to get angry, then I was greeted with my home screen, I have never been so happy to see all my icons.

Well that it my little story of the nightmare I had with the new iPhone 2.2 update, let us know if you have experienced the same problem.

You need to be smarter than your phone.

I am glad that apple is continuing to update the firmware, but can they get some priorities straight? Like better integration with exchange calendar invites and some copy paste. I would love to replace my blackberry with an IPhone at work, but these basics need to be provided. Sure Street view is nice, but all its going to do is help me find the soup line if I lose my job because I missed a calendar invite.

I had a smooth downloading and installation of 2.2 update. And its amazing improvement. I really love Apple. No other company give you something everyday to cheer.

No problems here, everything went very smoothly, especially suprising as I’d been in the pub all evening! :)

The gentle man who has written “update a nightmare” doesn’t know how to use an iPhone he should better use standard simple B&W big sized phone.

I am so happy Storm failed miserably my friend who bought Storm now planing to return it. The touch screen is jagged poky and slow.

it initially took more than 50 min just trying to “contact software update server,” and I had to manually disconnect it to make phone calls. Finally one time I left it connected long enough and when I came back to check I got an error msg saying there was an error downloading. Now it’s my 4th attempt trying to update, it finally started downloading! I heard it took people from min to as long as 5 hours for the completed update. I guess the progress varies depends on how many and what apps you have? No idea. Let me keep my fingers crossed and hopefully I can be as lucky as those who had smooth update.

must because of china’s lousy connection, it will take 3HRS to download the 245.7MB software. Gosh!
