Apple have now released iTunes 8.0.2 Update, this latest update was hoped to make a number of improvements but already people have been reporting problems. Apple says that the new update fixes a couple of issues that the digital media software had as well as improving accessibility for those with impaired vision.

iTunes 8.0.2 Update fixes a quality issue that the software had when creating MP3s on certain computers, the update also addresses the connectivity issue to the iTunes Store with certain Internet proxies on Mac OS X.

Apple also says that iTunes 8.0.2 will improve accessibility with VoiceOver, this helps to aid those who are visually impaired, this is done by reading out loud the contents of the files. The update is 60.3MB and is available from Apple’s iTunes site.

As we mentioned above there have been a number of problems reported already with the update. One of the problems was on someone’s MacMini; after he installed the update and then restarted all he has now is a blue screen. Read More

Another user installed iTunes 8.0.2 on to his Mac Mini, he then tried to open iTunes, all he got was a dialog box which said “The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13008)” The user tried to reinstall iTunes, but he still gets the same error. Read More

I have just downloaded iTunes 8.0.2. When I try starting it it will not open but is running but says it is unresponsive. I cannot force quit it and the only way to stop it running is to restart the machine. Since the update my computer spends an age on the blue screen when restarting the computer. I thought the benefit of a a mac was to avoid all this crap!.

I just downloaded 8.02 to my windows xp machine and now I can’t login to the iTunes store. I know get the following error:

“We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unkown error occurred (-9808). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later.”

  • Mike

I haven’t had any issues. I’ve had the itunes store problem with most versions of iTunes, and it’s sporadic. I don’t think it has anything to do with the update.

  • Machel

I hate this stupid thing. I downloaded the new version of itunes on Friday, November 21st and now I can not refresh my podcast or connect to the itunes store. I get an error message 3221. Freakin 8.0.2!!!! I am so mad!!!! My itunes was fine before this stupid download.

  • Bob Starling

Updated to 8.0.2 on vista. Now everytime I try to run iTunes it starts up Windows Installer to “Configure” the software. When finished it wants to reboot. After the reboot, exactly the same thing again.
Doing a system restore hasn’t fixed it either. Looks like I am heading for an uninstall.

I had a similar problem. The volume keys wouldn’t work after rebooting from the Quicktime/iTunes update (and Safari) so I restarted again. After restarting, I got stuck on the blue booting page, the one with the apple logo and gear wheel. Called apple care, did everything they could over the phone, nothing worked. Booting from the install disk and doing the disk verify/repair did nothing. Went into the apple store, they reinstalled leopard, and now everything is doing fine.

After iTune update, I can not open iTune app anymore.

  • KR

I have had nothing but problems with the new update. I can not even get to my itunes b/c the messages says there is a quik time error and then when I get to Quik time, It wants me to download the same thing everytime and I have let it go through its complete cycle twice. I am not happy, I just want my music back the way it was. These updates are about as ridiculous as Microsoft service pak 2.0.

  • Andrew

I downloaded this for Windows-and also the iPod Touch software update. So when I plugged my iPod in, it put it into recovery mode and says I have to restore it.

  • Filloretta

i want to download iTunes for my iPod but my pc restarts when i do that:S…i don’t know what to do:| can someone help me please…Im madd(((

  • Cody

    I HATE THAT UPDATE!!!!
Im so frustrated my iTunes was fine until this stupid update download
and ontop of that they dont even have a “Apple iTunes Support E-mail” so you can’t even get help!?!
I ve done everything it tells me to but nothing works
-uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and Quicktime
    -and a bunch other things
and when i try to open iTunes it says there is no Quicktime AND IT TELLS ME TO INSTALL iTunes?!?
    that makes no sense??!
and when i try to install quicktime it turns into an iTunes installer

Why is MAC talking trash about Microsoft when they’re having problems themselves
    HYPOCRITES!
and im just about to get an a nano for Xmas after having a 1st generation shuffle..for like 5 years!?!
if this problem isn’t fixed by Xmas im gonna punch somebody

  • Cody

    i Fixed it!!
if you cant get iTunes to open
like when you try to open it and it says to download iTunes because there’s no Quicktime
    DON”T INSTALL iTUNES!!!
    install quicktime seperatly
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
    select the quicktime only download
itunes should work after you download it

  • SM

I click YES to the update…what a mess!! It keep saying it could not upadate the program. Then I could not open the itunes becasue an error with QuickTime. I tried reinstalling quicktime but this did not fix it. I had to uninstalled and download as a brand new application from the website. Lost 4 hours of work and my iPod is not synchronizing correctly, cannot download HD videocast anymore. OS Vista.

  • jacee

I can not update, everytime I try to update to 8.0.2 I have an error message. I can not find support for this either. I know the last time I had a problem with iTunes I found support after hours of looking. Their support pages seem to go round and round. After reading all the above I think it is best not to install the update anyway.

I have the exact same problem…only with a PC. I wouldn’t have downloaded the new version (my old version worked fine) except for the reason that I upgraded to software for my iPod to 1.1.2 PC and it wouldn’t work on the version of iTunes that I had.

Does anyone have a clue as to how to fix this?

  • chris

my ipod wont sync with just the pics .. i have taken everything off of it 4 times since yesterday .. and even hacked it .. it puts the songs on there and just sticks on sync before it gets to the pics any help ?

  • hmcc

I tried to install 8.0.1.1 then 8.0.2 (tonight). With both updates, I got the message that:

“There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.”

What program? I do not have support staff or vendors at home. Do I need an update before the update? I don’t want to lose data, but want to make sure I am getting the improvements and also stop getting the “do you want to upgrade?” messages.

  • Annie

I installed 8.02 last week. All seemed to go well except when I got to the I Tunes store, the are broken links, and no artwork. I have uninstalled, reinstalled x 3, all to no change!!!
I have tried to download music and it starts to download but then starts and then stops. The error area says it has to do with the artwork not be available. I have already tried trying to “force” the artwork, and that didn’t help either. Ideas?

  • erika

Grrrr, is there any other music machine like itunes? i’ve had problem with itunes from day 1, bought an iphone and it upgraded, it wont work no more.. i finally fix that only to discover it wont work with my sim and i should look for at & t dumb sim. I got around that in the long run but updates still coming, i lost all my music on this stupid 8.0.2 upgrade because i thought my windows os based computer has crashed when i saw the dreaded blue screen, every thing freezes and the computer drags, and this is supposed to be a sony vio series that runs like rocket before. in my own opinion. this is a water loo for itunes. let someone like Microsoft take over if they don’t know what they are doing. i have the intention of throwing away my iphone and buying a samsung omnia and quite apple update which looks like a downgrade or degenerate.

  • Maryse

I installed the update and I regret it so much. Now, there’s no audio output. I’ve tried restarting my Macbookpro a few times, checked settings, but the problem persists. My entire audio output is non-existent, not just for iTunes, but for all other applications.

The problem was instantaneous the minute the update was installed. Any suggestions. I’m stuck.

  • Sean

Ok guys if you have the “quicktime needs to be installed” error, on itunes 8.0.2
    1. uninstall quicktime.
    2. install quickime and itunes separately.

  • Brittany

I can’t believe this! I got a 120GB Ipod Classic for an early christmas present,
and it is only compatible with Itunes 8
I attempted downloading it with the Apple Software Update, but that came up with “an invalid signature.” I tried to download it from the website, but that did not work either. I have no idea what to do!

  • Cate

When is this problem going to be fixed and how are we going to be advised. Next time wont bother with any upgrades. I am having the same problem as everybody else quicktime wont load even after trying manny times NOT HAPPY

  • angie

Installed the update on a 2 month old 120GB. Now iTunes tells me that they can’t synch 80-odd files, and it won’t download anything to the iPod. This is my first Apple product and the lack of comprehensive product usage memoranda and product support communications facilities is infuriating. Of course, if they do get a product support line, the operator probably won’t speak even semi-fluent English!

  • danwhittle

On the 8.0.2 upgrade, we got the typical “invalid signature” error on install, but did the download only, then install, that worked. Wish I would have read all this before upgrading, now just holding my breath. For people who think it freezes, when you launch itunes setup file, it take a good minute and a half before anything happens. Use that time to reflect on the nonexistent differences between mac and pc software…

  • LPC

This is the most frustrating AND time consuming thing ever. I was perfectly fine with my current version of Itunes. I just bought a brand spanking new Ipod Nano yesterday. Great right? Wrong. Cuz I had to udate to the version 8 of Itunes. Thought I did that. Then when I went to click on it, it said in was configuring, and afterwards prompted me to reboot to complete the configuration. I did. Then the same thing happened the next 4 times I tried it. So I ended up uninstalling the whole damn thing, and reinstalling it, downloading it directly from apple’s website. It seemed that had fixed the problem, but when I turned my computer back on this morning, the same configuring box came up again. So I am taking my Ipod back, and getting rid of Itunes all together. I’m getting an MP3 player and using old faithful windows media player because this is the third major problem I’ve had with Itunes. It;s unreliable.

  • MB

I can’t even get the update to load. I’ve now been prompted twice to download 8.0.2, and each time the download will not complete because of an unspecified “error.” It tells me that if the problem persists I can try to click on “tools > download manually” but I can’t even find a “tools” menu on iTunes! GRRRRRR.

  • joel venegas

i read some of the people’s comments

my problems are that all my playlists have been deleted causing me to repath all my music, movies, tvshows, and photos. but now it says everything i bought need a password to be allowed to play (on the exact computer it was originally on!) do they know how much crap i have bought this year? to go back and find all that and retype my password? they better fix this, it’s uncalled for

  • dave

I’ve had some of the same problems described above and I agree that the solution is to install quicktime separately from itunes.

  • Pat

A few days after upgrading (on Vista) I somehow ended up with a corrupted itl file and followed the online guidance to restore the library.xml file. That gave me a new xml that had none of my playlists and an empty music library. So I restored from my pre 8.02 backup DVDs, which did not complete correctly at the last disk. I eventually fooled it into working by importing the library.xml from the backup disk 1, then did about an hour of manual cleanup because I ended up with duplicates of everything. I haven’t tried syncing the iPod since doing all that. Hope it works.

This software is poorly designed, badly implemented, and extremely poorly documented and supported. Even Microsoft does better software than this. If anyone knows of a viable commercially supported alternative, I’m gonna buy it, give away my iPod, and buy all my tunes elsewhere.

  • Scott Spencer

I have a Vista Home Premium system and when I upgraded to iTunes 8.0.2 from 8.0.1, it totally messed up my iTunes program. Every time I click on the icon to start the program, it brings up a box and tells me that it is initializing and then after a min or two, it says to finish the install, please restart the system. So I do, and when I click on the icon to start iTunes up (again), again, it does the exact same thing. Then I try to do a system restore to go back to my previous version (the one that WORKS!!!!), and it is all messed up. I have to search online to find iTunes 8.0.1 to download and install. Once I do that, then I have to go and RE-DOWNLOAD Quicktime so that iTunes can work properly.

I love my iPod, but I hate when Apple does such a shitty job of putting these updates out without double checking that it works with it’s OS and Vista.

This is why I would NEVER go to an Apple for a computer system. That and the fact that they love to OVERPRICE their products.

  • DaveT

After installing 8.02 files would not play. Reinstalling quicktime solved the problem.

  • http://itunes Clair Hodge

I downloaded itunes version 8 but have not been able to open it to to the Data Execution Prevention feature on Vista. I tried to have it bypass itunes but it wouldn’t let me do this. Very frustrating.

  • Bill

8.02 said my iTunes file was not valid, then over wrote it with some default and I lost all my music. Luckily I have two pcs set up to sync and I won’t be upgrading the other pc. I would strongly suggest not updating to the new version.

  • Wendy

Since we have updated itunes to 8.0.2 version, start up on the computer does not work. Once computer is shut down, will not reboot without windows startup disk. Also, can not get the version 2.2 download. Says we do not have permission.

  • Anne

Great I update quicktime/itunes and now I cant connect it keeps saying re install and restart computer which Ive done around 5 times now! What shall I do?

  • http://www.taylorchristianjones.com Taylor

After installing this update, iTunes will play music and television shows fine, but WILL NOT play any movies. (Rentals or Purchased). Apple has had me reset my password, and install a new version of Quicktime, but nothing has helped. Very frustrating as Apple usually takes 3 or 4 days to reply to each follow up email I send them with the problem. Wish there was a phone number I could call..

  • http://productreview Joan Bradley

I purchased a new I-pod classic in December and updated my version of Itunes.
Music and podcasts kept “skipping” and either jumped back to main menu or to next track. I thought the ipod was defective since in my family we have owned nine ipods with no difficulty. Exchanged the ipod and the new one did the same thing. Apple support stated that it was a software issue and that it was being worked on. A search of the blogs showed that they have been “working” on my problem for about a year. I have to say that as soon as I upgraded the the version of ipod with the genius bar and the album cover shuffled that is when things started to go down hill.
Now even my old 30G Classic hiccups a little but at least it doesn’t skip to the next track. I have told all the ipod users in my house to not update their software
Oh-I took the new 160G ipod back. I couldn’t count on apple’s reassurance the skipping problem was being worked on.

  • Michele LaPorte

I am having a problem with iTunes 8.0.2…The cds I burn will not play on any of my cd players, my jukebox stereo or the 5-disc cd player I recently purchased. Before you say make sure I have audio CD check, rest assured that I followed the correct procedures to copy my playlist to CD and used a quality Memorex CD-R. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution? Please email me if you have any ideas I could try.
    Thank You,
    Michele

  • Susyy

I tried to download the new version 8 of itunes but everytime i click “download now” it takes me to this page where it asks for name and email. Is it supposed to do that?

  • Kris

This version is a disaster. I can not play any of my purchased music nor can I play the previews of songs in the itunes store. Does anyone have an older version of itunes 64bit, maybe v8.0.11?

  • Kris

Fixed. Had to wipe everything and anything apple related, then do reinstall of everything…works fine now.

  • chloe

the new itunes won’t even load to my computer it does all the loading and as soon as it gets to 100% it says theres something wrong with my computer. i already have an older version of itunes. is it my compter? something im doing wrong? or the new itunes? ive never had a problem with itunes before :S help!

  • mark harrhy

when i install itunes 8.0.2 it ruins my internet connection by disabling the wireless connection, which I cannot find how to turn back on, therefore I have had to restore to an earlier point.

  • blairg23

I am having a similar problem. iTunes keeps crashing on me, using up memory and becoming unstable. I can’t update to 8.0.2 either. c’mon Apple, let’s get this fixed please. I just bought an iPod Touch and I can’t even use it!

  • Liam Gallagher

  • Sonu

My ipod just won’t sync anymore. It’s like it just doesn’t want to be friendly anymore. It never gave me any trouble before and after downloading itunes 8.0.2 it won’t sync no matter what I do. I’ve tried restore, restart, uninstalling itunes and reinstalling, and my sister’s works just fine but she still has the old one. I’m starting to consider giving up on my ipod.

  • Dan Doyon

I just finished upgrade recently, now my master volume keeps being turned off. Seems to be too coincidental and looks like a virus/trojan.

  • http://anaara.com Fuad Kamal

I just updated to iTunes 8.0.2 and instead of syncing my phone, iTunes said the OS could not be updated. Now my iPhone (classic) is a BRICK – it just displays the usb cable to iTUnes graphic, I can reboot the phone only to get back to that screen, and iTunes doesn’t recognize that the phone is connected so there is no way to restore it.

  • Mikey D

    Solution!!

everyone just uninstall 8.0.2 and install a previous version!

i am running 8.0.0.35 on Vista SP1 and it works fine :)

    good luck to you all!

  • Daniel

This new upate has many problems. My library continues to become corrupted and not recognized in start up of itunes. When I reinstall the new version songs are partially played. ugh!

  • Joe

Do I need 8.0.2? I never use the Apple Store and I’m having no problems with my ipod. Can I leave ‘good enough’ alone?

  • marc quinn

Hi i have a mac mini and i recently updated itunes to the newest version, what a mistake as now i have 21 purchased songs in my download that will not download as theres an error. • Lizi

    I have the same thing!
Tried uninstalling itunes about 3 times now and when i download it again it just restores the old one.

when i open itunes it comes up, then the spinning colour wheel thing goes for about 10 seconds, disappears and then says it had to quit unexpededly.

seriously…i need my itunes today for band work.
anyone got any ideas on how i can sort it out?

i emailed them last night, but apparently its taking them 4-5 days to respond and im not up for ringing an 0807 number :(

  • Lizi

Mine just loads for about 10 seconds and then disappears.
    So frustrating seriously.

Also tried to uninstall it and it wont seem to go away, tried everything and when in install it again it just restores the itunes I had before.

What the hell is going on!

  • Vivian Jensen

I am having the same problem. Can’t get past the QuickTime portion of download. Have been on the phone with Apple Support and McAfee Support and have tried everything they and I can think of. Were you able to resolve it and, if so, how?

  • Vivian Jensen

Have done that multiple times and iTunes still won’t completely download. Any other suggestions? Have even spent hours on the phone with Apple and they say its a problem with my spyware or my computer.

  • Jordan

I’m having the same problem right now
where you able to find out how to fix it?
If you did please tell me

  • Rick

Had to reinstall 8.02 twice, first one failed, none of my ipods, or itouch’s was recognized after the update, I had to go into device manager after I plugged my ipod in, right click on the ipod device, select update device driver, and point it to \windows\system32. Once I did this, I could plug my iphone, itouch, and ipods in and snyc with no problem.

  • Scott

You know Rick, they have iTunes 8.1 out now.. I downloaded it yesterday (3/19) and it installed fine on my computer.. I could never get 8.02 to run at all, but 8.1 works great (not 8.01, but 8.10).

  • Steve

Have just come across this message board, hope somebody can help me. I too have recently downloaded an updated I Tunes programme, and have since experienced the following problems:

I do not buy or down load music from the Web, I just use I Tunes to sort, compile etc. music for my I Pod.

Recently, (since the new download) any albums/playlists that I have compiled myself from different original CDs, eg: Take an original 10 track CD, add some extra songs from different CDs, go to “Get Info” and change album title and track names etc. so new CD has say, 20 tracks OR CDs I have made myself from the original analogue recording, either vinly or casette, (I have a CD Recorder so am always converting vinyl to CD). In these two cases the compilation CD or analogue converted CD when put onto I Tunes appears to malfunction. I try and play one of these albums and a completely different track, (ALWAYS FROM ANOTHER COMPILATION/ANALOGUE CONVERTED CD) will play in it’s place and at the same time delete the original track that I had selected. (A message appears saying ” the song XXX could not be used because the original file could not be found”. Does any of this make sense to any of you, it’s driving me crazy with frustration and I’m not very good with computers anyway. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks very much

  • nenette

I used to love the itunes till I downloaded the 8.0 version and I could not burn cd anymore.I tried a lot of things even downloaded the tune clone and missed up my computer I lost all the music I have put in there that Ive spend for days and recently I downloaded 8.2 version but still I cant burn CD.That pissed me off I spend a lot of money on Itunes and I cannot burn it.I like to burn Cd so I can listen on my car.So i stop buying music. Thats what people should do don’t spend your money on itunes it just a waste.Ill just going back to buying the CD album at list you have it.

  • Gary Grunau

The I tunes up date installer did it’s thing, now I can’t open Itunes, Any one got any ideas , Who can I call to get this fixed?

    thanks

  • lantao

My ipod touch was not recognized after the update… is it because itune or ipod touch? Man, I never jailbroke it…
The recent frustration on apple made me dislike apple gradually. I have not opened my macbook for about one month. Then after the update, it did not recognize the ipod..

  • ELSIE

THIS NEW ITUNES IS THE WORST I HAVE TO KEEP REINSTALLING TO SEE THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER I AM SO MAD RIGHT NOW.

  • Mario

Installed 8.0.2 onto XP, iTunes is complaining about a Mozilla plugin file, npitunes.dll

Now NOTHING WORKS!!!! APPLE YOU SUCK!!!!

  • Chris

It’s hard to take a review seriously when there are that many misspellings.
