Apple iPhone 2.2 Firmware Update: Issues and Problems

Apple iPhone 2.2 Firmware Update: Issues and Problems

By: Peter Chubb | November 21, 2008 | 35 Comments

Apple are working hard, not only have they launched iTunes 8.0.2 Update; they have now released iPhone 2.2 update. The download is 246MB, and has a number of new features. The new update has a number of new Google Map features, like Street View.

This feature runs so smooth on Wi-Fi, and still works great over 3G. Other feature updates include, public transit, over-the-air podcast downloads improved sound quality for visual voicemail, mail enhancements, fewer dropped calls and Safari tweaks. The much needed copy and paste and new MMS features are not in this Apple iPhone 2.2 Firmware Update.

Users are already reporting a number of problems since downloading and installing the update, some of these include: One user was unable to delete emails, another users said that his update failed, iTunes gave him an error but he ignored it and went on with the download, now his iPhone is stuck on the connect to iTunes screen. Another problem is that the auto-brightness stops working properly.

A subtle but very useful update for the iPhone from Apple. Still no cut and paste as already reported but I’m sure that will come. The one thing I would love to see is auto switching to landscape keyboard mode in horizontal position. Something that occurs in Safari when you browse. Being able to turn off the auto-correct feature when writing text messages or emails is a bonus too as is the more accurate 3G signal display. All up, I’m very happy with this update and so far, no problems to report.

i was in the process of updating to 2.2 today (JST) the update posted no errors and when completed said leave phone connected and it will restart when complete and appear in iTunes.
What happened is the phone began to restart then got stuck at the connect to iTunes screen. iTunes however reported that my phone cant be used with iTunes because the info required for activation can not be obtained from the phone. check that the SIM card is in and the phone is not PIN-Locked….oh, yeah right i took out the damn card and locked it while it was updating…i think not. Now my phone is in a dead state and so far no way to recover it. PISSED OFF is an understatment.

Lucky you Lou…i’d like to just get the damn phone working again

my iphone has been ‘verifying’ the updated software for over an hour now.

I am glad that apple is continuing to update the firmware, but can they get some priorities straight? Like better integration with exchange calendar invites and some copy paste. I would love to replace my blackberry with an IPhone at work, but these basics need to be provided. Sure Street view is nice, but all its going to do is help me find the soup line if I lose my job because I missed a calendar invite.

One way that you are supposed to be able to fix this is by disconnecting the iPhone, reboot the computer. The computer will try to search for the device driver. Select Install Drivers Later when you can. Open your start menu, right click My Computer, Select Properties, Select Device Manager. The iPhone is listed under Other Devices as Apple Mobile Device. Right click Select Update Drivers. Select Browse My Computer, Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support. Click OK or Next. If it installs backup your phone and update with iTunes. Hope this helps.

Try restarting your computer. Then restart iphone. Then open iTunes and then connect phone to iTunes.

This solved the same problem when I had it a couple of hours ago…

My Iphone was working perfectly until I did the 2.2 update. Now, email does not want to delete. I get an error message stating that mail can not be moved to the trash bin now. Is anyone else having this problem and do you now of any way to fix it? Thanks for any help.

  • ceb

Thanks all. PJ you were the closest i think to a solution. However the driver did install ok. Restarted the computer and all. Still no love. simply telling me it cant obtain the activation info from the phone and to check that the sim card is not locked. it wasnt before the upgrade attempt

Email seem not to be able to be deleted with the new 2.2 upgrade comeone apple test it first before destrobuting it to the world !!!!!

  • Bill Moore

    DO NOT UPGRADE TO 2.2.

This thing is buggy. I just upgraded and I am getting a ‘black’ screen, nothing more, when I try to use the phone.

Serious issues with this upgrade need to be resolved. Wait for 2.2.1

  • Memorex

Does any one know how to downgrade to 2.1 ????

  • angry anderson

mine was fine till I updated- tried all of the above suggestions- phones stuck on connect to itunes- very pd off

I had trouble getting the last version and this time, it is even worse. I actually was able to get the new iTunes version. But when I tried to get the iPhone update to 2.2, at the end it said there was an error. I reported the error. Then I had no phone usage. It gave me no option but to restore. Now I have nothing but a wiped clean phone. I can’t find a way to get back all the apps I bought. Some of the newest ones aren’t even listed on my computer. Same thing with the music. And all of my contacts are gone. I haven’t been able to synch my phone recently–the computer/iTunes screen had changed and there was no way to synch. So I’ve lost everything. I love the iphone when it works but this kind of problem every time there is a change is just plain stupid and a waste of my time. Get the kinks out first people—I’m not a guinea pig. And you are stuck–if you don’t update—you can’t use your apps because they update to the new version. Any one got a solution because as much as I love my iphone, I’m ready to chuck it.

  • memorex

Download quickpwn22 for third party app is out for the new update 2.2
And it works I’ll installed cydia the best 3rd party

  • bigness

EVERY time I try to update a version, it takes me over an hours. The “unknown error” stoppage hits, and I have to restore the phone at least once. In the middle of updating to V2.2 and stopped again.

Yeah, “Apple, it just works” MY A$$$$$. If I wasn’t under contract, I’d ditch this POS in a heartbeat!

  • Kacey

I hate this freakin update. I get like 50 emails at least daily and now I’m getting that error message that the mail cant be deleted. They need to fix that ASAP.

  • n2n

    Email delete FIX:

Setting > Mail, Contacts, Cal..> “Your Account” > Advance > Delete Mailbox > under “On My Iphone”, click Trash (even though it might already be checked marked). That’s it

if this doesn’t work, then under “On the server” click Trash

  • kacey

    great thanks email problem solved.

just out of curiosity, is anyone experiencing a random and RAPID battery drain? Like the phone is fully charged and then all of a sudden you go to use it and you have like 2% battery life left.

  • memorex

Yeah also here I’ve notice battery drop significantly to dead battery

  • memorex

Bigness you may have to free up your music on iPhone . Aslo if your computer is slow for reasons like infection of virus it may cause that .. It take me about 5 min or less to up date I tried it to diff phones already..

  • bob

n2n…Thank you for your email advice…worked immediately!

  • Rich

I instaled the upgrade and my phone forze on the connect to I tunes screen – couldnot shift it. I rang apple support and the only way around it is to restore to factory settings! I lost all of my info on the phone – photos the lot! Apple are aware of this and so far have done nothing about it – Quote from the support chap i spoke to.
I love this phone – however, if everytime i update im going to lose everything, apple will lose me…

Be WARNED you might lose everything if you update!

  • memorex

Rich. Just restore it using the same computer and yull be able
To regain back your pictures at least if any that you previously had!!

  • Rykkers

Just updated to 2.2, mostly all working fine except gps! No little blue dot, just crosshairs but about a kilometer away. Still calculates route though

  • Ram

The 2.2 works fine except for updating apps from the AppStore and editing the notes. I can do nothing with them. I love my iPhone, but this sucks!!!

Is there a way to delete this update?

Ever since I updated, a lot of websites are not working. When I check fantasy sports teams on Yahoo only half the page pulls. Hotmail on safari is screwed up (worked just before I updated the other day) and a lot of websites restrict where I can scroll too. This has been a pain and has ruined some of the most important things I do with my iphone.

  • feek

Same issue as Rykkers, no true GPS fix. It seems to only be using the estimated location based on cell tower and possibly WiFi location databases.

Applications that use location services (e.g. CPS Tracker) show that the location fix is non-GPS.

  • rykkers

I tried everything even found site that allows you to download 2.1 it shows how to “select” the update you want! Didn’t work.rang apple as phone was still under warranty tried all the soft and hard resets, nothing, eventually diagnosed as problem with antennae for gps and ended up getting a new phone which now works perfectly. Guess I am one of the lucky ones.it’s worth noting new phone has 2.2 , also the gps was the only problem that I had, I never experiened a. Problem with anything else.sorry I am not much help

my iphone is now stuck on theblack screen/apple logo where it has been since uploading the 2.2 firmware updates.

does anyone know how I can get the phone working or just how to switch it off??? I only got it today, I havent even used it yet. I figured perhaps trying to switch it off but it wont let me do this. Trouble is now I cant even phone up apple because this is my only phone.

Hi everybody, you know I have had the same 2 problems described above,The battery drains very quickly even if I do not use the iPhone, and twice the screen has turned black where the brightness does not work so I have to reboot the phone.

I made a video tutorial on my blog so you can downgrade the iPhone to version 2.1. All the links and software you will need are there. Visit my blog at http://www.aramistech.com. Hope this helps until they revise the version.
