Xbox 360 RRoD with New Experience

Xbox 360 RRoD with New Experience

By: Peter Chubb | November 20, 2008 | 29 Comments

Yesterday was meant to be a great day for Xbox 360 users, as they were able to download the Live update of Xbox Experience. It has not even been 24-hours since NXE update and already the complaints are coming in, some with RRoD problems.

A number of forums on the Internet are showing that Xbox 360 users who upgraded to the new Xbox Experience have noticed that their consoles are slowing down, connection freezes, lock ups, and a number of other errors.

The Red Ring of Death reports is a shock to many, some have said that the RRoD is only affecting modded consoles; however there are some untainted Xbox 360 consoles that is also meeting the same fate.

As yet there is no official response from Microsoft. Have you been affected by any problems since the NXE update?

Nope, no problems at all. Don’t really see why the new interface should cause a RROD.

I downloaded it yesterday and now cant get any sound! E-mailed microsoft but no reply so far.

I just did. Got the update, loaded Fallout 3 onto my harddrive. Was playing it earlier when it froze up loading a level and now I have the RRoD. G’damn.

I got a few lock ups, in fact, immediately after accepting the terms and conditions, (before even starting the new dashboard) my system locked up, and I had to force shutdown. Navigating some of the menus, friends/party list specifically, caused some minor chugging. The most nervewracking was my Gears of War 2 disc took 4 tries to play. It would simply not read the disc, and in fact didnt even give me the unplayable disc message. Simply said “open tray”. The disc is only a few days old, and is absolutely scratchless, so that is very worrysome. However , on the whole it is more visually appealing than the old blade system, but much more tedious to navigate. And as for the avatars, whats the point? I get it, its a gimmick, but I seriously think I couldve done without it. All in all, nice upgrade, the netflix viewer is great, and party chat is fantastic. As with most XBL dash updates, there are some kinks to work out, but change is good.

I hit yes to the system upload, then the RRoD. I unplugged everything, took it into a different room, plugged it in and then it was working again. It again notified me of the update, hit yes again and then RRoD. Again unplugged it, took off the hard drive, reconnected and started again and it was fine. But when I attached my hard drive, the RRoD. Now it’s in the mail back to Microsoft repair for the 2nd time. What a frickin’ nightmare.

I had this problem last year twice the first time I took it back I got a new one at best buy. The second time though the warranty was up and microsoft said they could not do anything about it, unless I paid $140 for the repair and that didn’t include shipping and handling. I was pretty mad but I did some across a repair guide, with videos for like $20 and it saved my gamer score from suffering ha. It took about an hour to fix my rrod error and opening the console was a snap. I got it from http://redlightxbox360.com if you are having the same problems and microsuck wants you to shell out more money I suggest getting a repair guide.

Ever since the NXE update, I have been getting lock ups all the time. Sometimes i can get about 30min of play, but usually happens within 10 min. I had absolutely no problems since my first RROD about 1.5 years ago (sent in and replace with refurb system.)

Downloaded new experiance. RROD. Unmoded XBOX 360.

Downloaded the update on Friday the 21st, last week. The machine restared to the RRoD. I’ve tried everything since then. It’s an unmoded one dated 2 Feb 2006. I borrowed it from a friend to check it out, I didn’t play it much at all, I’m not a big gamer. I’ve spent all weekend reading about the problem. I know for sure now that I will Never Ever!!! be getting this console. My friend is gutted. I will do whatever I can to ensure everyone knows about it. It’s just shambles!!! I’m discusted. The machine worked perfectly before th update and have never overheated!!!!!

This and the PS3 Firmware 2.4 update are examples of why you should NEVER download major software updates until after at least one month after release. Holding off on updates will allow developers time to fix bugs in the updates. To prove a point, I am still using iTunes 7.6. I refused to install iTunes 8 until next year and I’m sure glad that I did; my iPod is safe.

I turned on my XBOX 360 last night to watch a DVD we rented. It prompted me to download an update, so I did. The XBOX restarted and I saw this new cool splash screen and then what looked like a “select a profile” page flashed up for a split second. The screen went black and the XBOX 360 spun down and went quite. Three red rings appeared on the front. It was dead from that point.

I called an Al Queda agent somewhere in Pakistan that pretended to be a Microsoft AGENT. The idiot could not understand ANYTHING I said, even after spelling phonetically for him.

I got a UPS shipping label for my unit but my info was totally wrong for the return address. The info attached to my Live account that he inputted was also completely wrong. I went in and changed it all and called them back… this time I got thru to someone in the USA and they fixed my shipping label.

I am now in the process of waiting for Microsuck to fix my XBOX!

I got my first RROD in July this year, microsoftcock fixed it, then power brick went in August. Downloaded the NXE last thursday, bought guitar hero world tour on friday, turned on the console saturday morning and got the RROD! That’s twice in 4 months, oh joy!

Phoned microsoft customer service (bunch of incompetent f*ckwits from eastern europe) and after 5 days of complaining i finally got them to correctly send the label to UPS and they collected it today. Also managed to wrangle a free game out of microsoft for complaining so much. I love my 360 but seriously getting pissed off, to break once is bad, but twice in 4 months is a disgrace, hopefully they will give me a new unit back, but will likely be a refurb unit.

I had 3 red lights before the update after watching a DVD, rebooted and everything was fine did the upgrade and chooses my mees and then got RROD. Am waiting for MS to email my label, did this online – what a hassle you have to sign up to loads of stuff – a lot of hoop jumping.

They only give you 20 days to send them the RROD xbox, you have to supply the box and it ups to me to ensure it is packaged if not they can reject the repair. Under UK law they are responsible for collection and goods must last a reasonable length of time.

I downloaded it yesterday, works perfectly
    the xbox aint moded

We have two XBox 360 consoles. One we bought refurbed from GameStop and the other we bought from a neighbor who was tired of it. Two days after the update our first system quit with a red light in the lower right quadrant with error code “E 73″ (ethernet error). Contacted Microsoft and UPS will pick up the console today for repair. We attached the hard drive to the spare XBox and have been using it, but then today it also started up with the same red light in the lower right of the ring. This time with error code “E 68″ (voltage/hard drive error). I removed the hard drive then restarted the system and it worked fine, so I put the hard drive back on it and so far so good, but we have noticed that our game save data for the new Call of Duty World at War has been erased. Our other games are still saved. We had NO problems until this “new experience” download. I’ll probably be sending the hard drive off for repair soon as well I’m betting. I wonder if there is any way to go back to the old experience?

I finally got my xbox back and it works fine now. I strongly recommend keeping the box they sent it in because you may need it again. If you have the box, you only need to print out the mailing label to send it back rather than wait for them to send you the empty box. Saves a few days of not having your xbox.

I just downloaded the new update on a completely stock system, and it caused a RRoD immediately after the update completed.

  • Jeff

I rarely play my xbox. It’s not modded and in great condition (probobly because I never play it). I downloaded the experience thingymajig…red ring. It’s been in Texas for the past week being fixed by Microsoft. The experience download looked pretty cool…for the thirty seconds before my system fried.

  • seano

    GOT IT TOO. SUCKS ASS

  • Paul

I downloaded the NXE (love how it’s a *required* update, unless you don’t like to play any of your games), and a week later, RROD for my 6 month old xbox. this is a system that I use mostly for streaming video – something that really shouldn’t be taxing the cpu/gpu enough to generate a significant amount of heat. no mods, completely babied. I’m really kicking myself for getting a 360 instead of a PS3. a better games library means nothing if the console fails at such an abominable rate. now I get to wait and see what sort of unit they give me in exchange.

  • dylanevl

At least MS was quick about fixing and returning my 360. A bit of advice to anyone who has to return their system– don’t wait for the box to mail it! Find your own way to pack it up safely and get it in the mail ASAP. Once your box gets to the factory, the turnaround is quick and waiting on the UPS guy is torture enough.

Although I almost didn’t get anything since they put the wrong address on the package! I just happened to see the UPS guy outside at the last minute delivering something to my neighbor. I ran downstairs and asked if he had anything for me and told him my name. He pulls out two packages (MS thankfully returned the harddrive I forgot to remove) and points out that they’re address to a different house down my street. What’s really strange is that the correct address was also on one of the packages just in smaller print.

To Paul: Kick yourself in the teeth for not getting a PS3? Don’t think so. You should be kicking yourself for not getting a Wii. Sony has a reputation of releasing software updates that brick PS3 consoles. Therefore, getting an XBOX 360 or PS3 is a waste of time and money. Unfortunately at this time, you would be better off getting a Wii or playing new games on your PC.

  • jwon

    Joe,
Xbox online gaming is freakin awesome. I play the same game on line for over a year because it never gets old. My wii is mostly for the kids and I don’t think they have online gaming. It does suck that microsoft makes such flawed consoles. Hope it doesn’t RRoD for the 3rd time.

I updated to the new xbox experience about a week ago. About four days ago I began experiencing disk read errors. Today the system completely stopped reading disks. I will be upgrading to one of the new Elite systems and hope that it doesn’t have the same problems that the first generation xboxes have.

I had RROD year ago. fixed it by replacing the screws on the cpu and gpu. worked until few weeks ago i got a RROD again. then i fixed it again. after the fix i inserted the CODWAW and after the mandatory update nxe it broke down again. i could not get it to work again although i changed the paste on the heatsinks and cooked it with out the fans. then i did the Towel cooking for 25 minutes and after cooldown it worked again. I gotta say allthough the games are great im sticking with my ps3 if the new xbox i bought already breaks even once. FU*K YOU .,…you know who !

  • babak

Yes. I got rrod about 2 weeks after the update. Also I had many freezes before it.
I think the NXE causes more overheating!!!!
    I don;t know why, but I still love 360
