It is no secret that three of the biggest automakers in the world have asked the U.S. Government to help bail them out. On Tuesday, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler asked for $25 billion worth of federal aid, but just the idea has been meet with some skepticism.
It seems that a huge number of lawmakers are concerned about the unions, the environment as well as Japanese auto plants in their home states. President Bush himself is against the idea of providing aid for the Detroit automakers; however President-elect Barack Obama is all for providing the struggling automakers with the aid.
I understand that using taxpayer’s money to bailout General Motors, Ford and Chrysler is not a popular choice, but the collapse of any one of these could be a disaster. If any one of the big three automakers were to collapse, then it could cost thousands of jobs which would be a big blow to the U.S. labor movement.
