Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii: Who’s Winning?

Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii: Who’s Winning?

By: Alan Ng | November 18, 2008 | 4 Comments

As we come up towards Christmas, those without a next-gen console will be hoping to pick one up, but with statistics and figures coming up all over the place, who is actually winning at the moment?

Well although some people might be slightly surprised, the Nintendo Wii continues to sell very well according to the latest sources from the NPD group. The Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 in unit sales and this is a trend that has happened since the launch. While the Nintendo Wii may not be the console of choice for some of us, it certainly hasn’t stopped people buying it, and the demand for it remains very high.

The Xbox 360 can also record a victory of their own as their nearest competitor in graphical terms the Sony PS3, doesn’t even come close. In terms of software sales, Xbox 360 is the clear winner as they have been available for longer. Another thing in Microsoft’s favour is that maybe they don’t see the Wii as a direct competitor anymore due to Nintendo’s target audience, and just prefer to focus on competition with the PS3.

It’s quite obvious that the Nintendo Wii has won the battle between all three consoles, the real fight is now between the PS3 and the XBox 360… I honestly think and hope that the XBox 360 will pick up in the new year once the novelty has worn off the PS3 and the fanboys realise it’s not actually what it’s supposed to be! :)

Wii has won this battle, 360 is seconds and the PS3 is third.

However, Nintendo has won by reaching a whole new demographic of gamer and expanding the market that way. As we’ve seen with the six-axis controller and the new 360 dashboard, Sony and MS have copied elements of this success, but in the minds of the general public, Nintendo is the current King having taken the crown back from the Playstation brand.

For the hardcore fans, it’s a fairly even split between the 360 and the PS3. The best games are currenty on the 360 and Xbox Live is better (from what I can see) than the PSN. But while MS and Sony duke it out for the hardcore fans, it just goes to show that the inability of the two to differentiate themselves enough to allow a clear winner.

Nintendo wisely backed out of the competitive ‘Next Gen’ arena and left MS and Sony fighting over the ever-decreasing tradional market share. Nintendo have gone back to what they do best: making excellent games and in doing this they have won this round of the battle.

All the protestations over the Wii not being a true ‘Next Gen’ console sounds like sour grapes to me.

In the console race, the Wii has already lapped the other consoles. The PS3 Firmware 2.4 leading to bricked consoles and the XBOX 360 Live Experience update creating a RRoD outbreak really turns me off. I have yet to purchase a new console and as it stands now, I will be choosing the Wii, even if it means passing up GTA4 and FFXIII. Nintendo is the best!!!
