October NPD: Sales for Xbox 360, Sony PS3, Wii and More
Filed under: Gaming, Nintendo Wii

Some latest console figures have came in today and it may be of surprise to some, but the Nintendo Wii continues to sell well in the US, and has surpassed predictions that the system would sell more than 800,000 units in October.
Yep, well much of the media interest surrounds the PS3 and Xbox360 these days, Nintendo’s console happily continues to shift consoles, 803,000 to be precise according to latest NPD figures.
The figures released, have also indicated that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has once again secured more sales over the Sony PS3, but usually not as much as a margin as the latest figures suggest, with Xbox 360 shifting almost 100 percent more than the PS3, worrying times perhaps for Sony?
For your information, here is the list of the figures from top to bottom:
1. Nintendo Wii – 803k
2. Nintendo DS – 491k
3. Xbox 360 – 371k
4. Sony PSP – 193k
5. Sony Playstation 3 – 190k
6. Sony Playstation 2 – 136k

“with Xbox 360 shifting almost 100,000 more units than the PS3″
I think you need to retake math, the difference between 190k and 371k is 181k thats almost 2 to 1.
LOL – every single post you make regarding both the XBOX 360 + PS3 is negative for the latter. I have not read one post recently which suggests that the PS3 may be better than the 360 in any sense and this is the cherry on top. A review site should be unbiased (your certainly pro 360) and you guys suggesting that its worrying times etc etc is just plain wrong.
If you look at the facts, Sony have a 56% increase in sales vis-a-vis October 07. This is amazing growth considering the current economic situation, and to bear in mind that the console itself is not much cheaper than last years model. Put this into the perspective of the 360 and we see a console which is now so cheap, that the masses can indeed afford it (if they dont want internet, hard drive or any of the other mod cons). The 360 is nearing the end of its life where as the PS3 is no where near it which means that the PS3 has many years to gain ground (having been behind to begin with)
Therefore this is not worrying for Sony at all, this is great news and I suppose they will be celebrating that they have a 56% increase in sales in just a year – a massive increase for any product and the shareholders will sure see this as just good news! Also, the massive increase in PSN subscriptions recently shows that the PS3 worldwide is growing faster and faster. This will still be a very close race in deed (counting out the WII)
@Dan
First of all there’s no point getting defensive, the PS3 isn’t going to go away and there are good games coming out to keep it’s owners happy but lets be honest, Sony is nowhere near where they would want to in the market right now and with the low price point of the 360 and the fact that they have been outsold 2 to 1 and their flagship game LBP failing to have a big impact, it’s got to be worrying times for Sony.
MS built up a lead by launching early and the slow post launch sales by Sony meant that the lead actually widened for a time, then the PS3 picked up some momentum and started to close the gap back down to about the level it was at when they launched, unfortunately 360 price cuts have reversed that momentum and so now they are looking at being the same distance behind MS that they were at launch but with the gap beginning to grow again and coming up to christmas, the time when the companies do most of their trade.
There’s no doubt Sony dropped the ball this gen and there’s no point getting defensive, i’m sure Sony’s fans are happy with their games and value their console but from Sony’s point of view their gone from dominant market leader to last place with every possibility of staying there or about for some time.
Sony’s performance has been lack luster, but they are at an earlier point in their life span, so it’s not compairing apples to apples. MS has just had a big price cut, but Sony really can’t because their where MS was last year. Besides that, with the past two months of increased sales, MS has only now matched Sony on total sales for 2008, so November and December sales will decide who is the winner for the year.
I’m still not convinced LBP will drive significant sales, but it only came out October 28, so I think it is a bit too early to say it failed to have an impact.
I’m sure Sony would like to have a better market position, especially after the success of the PS2, but MS hasn’t exactly hit it out of the park. Total console sales of nearly 25 million while the product is nearing maturity isn’t overly impressive, and with the significantly longer life of the PS3, and success of Blu-Ray, I expect Sony to finish this gen strong.
Im not getting defensive – I just think that sometimes, constantly being negative about something without mentioning any positives is not good journalism and I think that there are a few points Sony can sing and dance about as outlined in my last post. What I do feel and agree with is Sony has had a very poor start – primarily down to the late release of the console. I cant help but feel that sometimes though the PS3 was simply used to win the format war (Blueray) which this has done for them, Toshiba simply didnt stand a chance. Would such a win bring success to Sony as I do not know much about that area? If they get royalites everytime a blueray is created then I can see the reason.
Realistically, neither of the HD consoles have done very well compared to the Wii. The Wii has shown that graphics are not everything (although if they all created a machine like the wii I think I would no longer get a console – that style of play for me is more of a gimmick in my opinion)
Dan.
Blu Ray movies, internet browsers and NetFlicks that have NOTHING to do with gaming are Gimmicks.
Get That Right.
But dont the 360 and PS3 see themselves as home media centres – its not all about the gaming with respects to those consoles so they are not gimmicks.
Also, Blu Ray is the media that the games are presented in and I suppose you could say that it therefore has something a little to do with gaming?
Who cares Dan? What are you trying to prove? Unless you’re a Sony shareholder, just forget about it.
“If you look at the facts, Sony have a 56% increase in sales vis-a-vis October 07. This is amazing growth considering the current economic situation”
No, it just means the PS3 was selling like crap last year, which it was. The 360 outsold the PS3 and PS2 combined and then some last month. Sony have got nothing at all to be happy about, especially considering the Nintendo DS is still pounding the PSP into the ground.
“The 360 is nearing the end of its life where as the PS3 is no where near it”
Yes, I’m sure MS are going to just scrap a console that’s now making a profit, sells more hardware and software each month than its main competitor, and is millions of units ahead and pulling further ahead each month. It’s doomed I tell ya! Dooooommmeed!!!!
Of course many PS3 fanboys think they’ll pull the plug because they did with the first Xbox. The first Xbox was losing MS $170 dollars on each unit due to being sold at a loss when they pulled the plug on it. Why keep selling something that’s losing money when you’re about to launch a new console? The 360 is not losing money now and manufacturing costs are only going to go down as time goes on, so profits will go up.
The 360’s early demise is just a fantasy – wishful thinking on the part of PS3 owners who believe in “the power of the Cell!” and “the 10 year plan!” and think an army of adoring Playstation geeks will appear from nowhere, buying up PS3s by the million and sending it soaring past the 360. Since the PS3 was released I’ve heard “just wait until 2007!”, “just wait until 2008!” and “just wait until game X is released!” from the fanboys, yet time passes and AAA “system sellers” fail to sell systems in huge numbers and the fanboys still don’t learn. They’re either great at keeping the faith, or they’re sucked in completely by Sony. Probably a bit of both.
“100 percent more than the PS3″ john needs to work on his reading this means almost 2 to 1
