PS3: Gran Turismo 5 Crash Damage Problems

Kazunori Yamauchi, creator and producer of the Gran Turismo series, has said that Polyphony Digital is in talks with car manufactures to try and include crash damage in Grand Tirismo 5. Not having crash damage in Gran Turismo Prologue has caused nothing but problems for the developer.
It has always been a huge undertaking to convince car makers to allow Gran Turismo to include damage in their new game. Earlier this year head of ‘Ferrari Challenge’ developer ‘System 3′ said that convincing Ferrari to allow damage on their cars would be a “big challenge.”
The problem is Yamauchi is hoping to use realistic damage in a game, nothing like what other car racing games do. This could hurt the reputation of a car manufacturer, which is why they are reluctant to allow it.

Either way, the full GT5 is going to be AMAZING.

GT5 will be amazing, but for the car manufactures, any car u smash into a wall going 200mph is gonna have damage. unless they want to release tanks in the game, then u wont be doing 200 mph. Id challenge any car company to test their car at that speed. Will it have damage? i think so!
If i was representing a car manufacture, id love to have our cars in GT5 . it should be a honor to be chosen. and damage is apart of any racing in real life.
That’s funny as Forza 2 has crash damage on it’s large list of cars which include Ferraris, you can even slap a custom paint job and accessories on them
GT5 wants to have realistic crash damage not canned animations in forza 2. Forzas damage is superrficial and the car has a limited way of getting damaged. GT5 wants to add real car damage physics to the cars
@lans
Whatever, but they can’t go on having cars crash at top speed and nothing happen to them, that’s just crap.
The reason Forza has crash damage is because it won’t sell anywhere near as much as GT5. Everyone knows GT5 will be a massive game and the car manufacturers don’t want damage for that reason.
My opinion is that damage is better kept out of the GT series. Let’s remember why we like the game - for it’s sim style arcade fun factor. No one likes to get smashed into a barrier with terminal damage on an online game. No fun in that…
You are joking, right?
Mark is right John. The last thing you want in an online race is to be pushed of the circuit and get totalled by some idiot no matter how cool or realistic it looks. It will just turn into destruction derby with people more interested in crashing than racing. Personally id love to see damage in the game but that from a simulation point of view, it would definetely be abused ingame.
@James
How can a game that’s supposed to simulate the thrill of motor racing, not simulate damage?
Oh and while i don’t think that damage being abused online is much of an argument as i generally choose who i play against, here’s an idea, turn damage off in the options when you’re setting up an online race.
I’ve been planning to buy a PS3 for some time and a good Gran Turismo game might be enough to get me to take the plunge but if they are going to stick with the ping pong physics that may have been excusable last generation then i’m better off sticking with Forza.
I hope they do include damage as motor racing is my favorite genre and you can never have too much of a good thing.
A racingsimulation without damage?
Absurd!
Simulation even claiming beeing realistic should have damage. It changes your hole drivingexperience.
I truely hope they add damage. This was the only thing that realy disapointed me when i got the game.
