Killzone 2: Is it doomed?

Killzone is due for release next year and is set to be one of Sony’s main attractions. The game looks superb graphically, and judging by early beta impressions, it will turn one to be one of the big successes for the ps3 , we hope…

Announced way back in 2005 at E3, it has been in a development for a whole 3 years now, and shouldn’t encounter much more problems leading up to its early 09 release. A great article over at Gamingfront.net have suggested that while Killzone is looking to be the best-looking game ever on a console, it is the marketing tools that Sony have used in the past which could lead to this game falling from its grace.

If we look at the last supposedly ‘huge’ titles released from Sony, Little Big Planet and Resistance 2, they haven’t really been pushed enough in advertising and marketing. If you look at the sales of Microsoft’s Gears of War 2 which was heavily compared to be a competitor for Resistance 2, Microsoft did a far better job of getting the public aware and prepared for a huge title by advertising all over the place. I’m a big Resistance 2 fan, but I feel like it hasn’t been advertised enough, especially on the TV, and this will ultimately result in a loss of sales for Sony.

Unless Sony acknowledges that they are going to have to advertise Killzone 2 heavily to the public, even though it will probably go on to break records, simply due to its time in development and brilliant early impressions.

Let us know what you think.

“Killzone is due for release in the next couple of months and is set to be one of Sony’s main attractions this year. The game looks superb graphically, and judging by early beta impressions, it will turn one to be one of the big successes for the ps3 this year, we hope”

It launches in 2009….”and shouldn’t encounter much more problems leading up to its early 09 release.” Was that first paragraph just added because you had space to fill???

Some questionable writing aside…I think it’ll do fine. PS3 should be at 17 mil by February (hopefully 18), which would result in some good sales for the game, especially as you say, since it looks like one of the best shooters to ever grace a console.

One of those days perhaps!? Thanks for your comment though Morne.

It’s interesting you compare Gears 2 sales to Resistance 2 sales for two reasons:
    1. Gears 2 was released WORLDWIDE and Resistance 2 is only out in NA.
    2. We don’t even know how many copies Resistance 2 sold.

Perhaps a little brain power should be used before posting stupid statements

agree with sk8man, but i dont know / care? im a huge killzone fan. havent got an xbox tho.. whilst im playing and enjoyin games the last thing im ever going to think of is i hope this has beat in sales terms (insert rival game on different console than PS). its stupid and im fed up with the attitude of all you nerds with no lives! PLAY! ENJOY! i know its a multi £££ business but let the corperation bigwigs fight their own battles whilst you fight the helghast! cant wait to be in the ZONE!

    @ Sk8man

1.It’s easy to compare the sales of Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2. Gears is known to have already sold 2million. Unless Resistance matches that (which it won’t) then Gears wins. Its that simple.

2.The article just points out how Sony is not doing all it can to advertise it’s big exclusives. There is a bi partisan consensus growing that states just this. Look at reaction on N4G to see what I mean.

    3. If you are a fan boy. There is no need to take offense to the article. It states that Killzone 2 will be good and that if it fails it won’t be the games fault. But rather the lack of advertising.

  6. Sk8man says:

@omodis420, don’t worry I’m no fanboy and I fully realize the intent of the article and it’s message about Sony’s lack of advertising. However my point was that the author (and you) are saying comparing sales data is ok when we only know one game’s sales. I have no doubt that Gears sold more, but my original two points stand and they are facts.

I just want to get across that I agree that Sony doesn’t know shit about advertising. But comparing sales of one game released worldwide to a game released in one territory is stupid no matter how you slice it.

Sk8man: please, before talk look the facts: http://www.vgchartz.com/

As you can see, contains the “worlwide sales” for both games… if you’re not so stupid… I guess… fanboy!!!!

ok. i think ALL of you are missing something HUGE here. sony cannot advertise in comparison to that of microsoft in that microsoft is worth over 300 billion dollars and counting!

they can afford campaigning their games through ads and what not. sony, on the other hand is at a big disadvantage. look into it:

microsoft is a computer company, making company games, computers, computer software, AND game consoles.

sony was an electronics manufacturer that saw big money in the gaming industry. so they went for the bait in a battle against the mobile gaming war with nintendo and sega, and etc. all of a sudden, along comes big old bad microsoft with their multi-billion dollar industry and completely wipes the gaming zone away with their business, using tactics with cheaper manufacturing costs, larger mass shipments, and relentless advertising.

nintendo just passed sony in worth i think like a year ago, or something like that. you can look it all up online. its sad, since i really love the playstation. i still own the first and second systems, and both run perfectly fine. havent had a single problem with either. and now i have a ps3, along with killzone, which i just bought yesterday, and ive never been happier.

so you cant blame sony for its hesitance to advertise. theyre facing a meaner giant with sharper and larger teeth. its like a dog fighting a grizzly bear. theyll never win. so you should just let it go, and let sony do what they can to keep themselves above water. thats what theyve been doing these past six years.
