AMD are to upgrade their aging Opteron servers, they will now use the 45nm ‘Shanghai’ Quad-Core Processors. The new processors are thought to deliver at least an increase of 35 percent in both performance and power efficiency.
Shanghai will launch today, Thursday November, 13, this is the Advanced Micro Devices long-awaited, next-generation version of the Opteron server processor. Many experts believe that this could be a turning point for AMD, as they have struggled in the market, which has been dominated by rival, Intel.
Shanghai is the first chip built by AMD, using their advanced 45-nanometer semiconductor fabrication process. This move will now bring AMD on par with Intel, who have been shipping the 45nm processors for almost a year now.
