Little Big Planet Levels Deleted: Sony PS3 Gamers How do you feel?

We reported yesterday that there have been copyright infringements on LittleBigPLanet, when Sony PS3 users have been creating their own levels. Players had noticed that their custom levels were moderated, then deleted.

Player are now very angry and have been expressing their feelings on the official Little Big Planet forum. As yet there is no official word from Media Molecule, but it seems that it is the use of copyrighted materials is the cause of the levels being deleted.

What is making LittleBigPlanet players even angrier is the fact that Media Molecule’s system does not allow users to change the copyrighted material so that they can keep their level. How do you feel, that your levels are being deleted?

I’m surprised i didn’t see this coming, it was a rootkit infection and Sony’s aggressive stance on DRM that stopped me buying a PS3, or any other Sony product for that matter.
One thing i’m confused about though, do Sony actually own Media Molecule? as i thought i read somewhere that they helped form the company in return for 3 exclusive games and after that they were not bound to any one console.
Anyway my heart goes out to anyone that has spent days creating a custom level just to get it deleted unfairly, i know what that’s like from when my HHD has died in the past.

Wow, Michael, Mr. High and Mighty.

Let me throw in my poor conjecture here- All I know is that from what I have heard, read and seen, levels that lots of people have been putting many hours into creating are being deleted from the servers, and access is being blocked on their own machines to re-edit them. This is FACT. Myself, and many others, are now very hesitant to put forth any effort or time to make any cool levels for fear of having all our hard work thrown down the toilet. As anyone who has been playing the user created LBP levels can attest to, MOST of the user created levels you have to sift thru are complete wastes of time. I usually have to play thru at least 10 crappy levels to find 1 that is even mildly entertaining. Unfortunately, because of this modding, the people who have the creativity and drive to make amazing levels are going to be put off for fear of losing all their time and hard work. It is not safe to assume your level will be protected just by not including any trademarked or copywrited materials in there. Chances are anything you create yourself is going to resemble ’something’ that is questionable to someone.

Now lets sadly watch the LBP community spiral away into mediocrity. Media Molecule and Sony better address this problem soon and alleviate our fears, or huge chunks of the LBP community are going to be lost. I myself am at the end of the rope, after the rocky start with censoring a song, bad server problems, ect.

I have not had any levels deleted yet, but I am not willing either to put forth anymore the 30+ hours I have spent in the past designing levels just to have all that time and energy thrown away for nothing. Way to let us use our limitless imaginations, guys…

I always thought this would happen. Sony has taken a big risk with its open stance on PSN content. It was praised when it allowed UT3 players mods and maps.

But this is essentially a game thats going to be played by a LOT of young kids. Judging from the amount of idiots on XBL, im pretty sure there are a lot of people waiting to post some pretty awful stuff that they have created on LBP. If they dont keep strict regulations on the content of uploaded levels, they are going to get a massive amount of complaints.

MS are very strict when it comes to user content, which i find suffocating but understand how complicated such issues can become

  4. Slippy Sloppy says:

Well I feel for people who have spent hours creating content only to have it deleted without explanation. I’m now hesitant to create my own levels. People can be spiteful, jealous or just malicious and if a level lives or dies because someone submits a complaint, then this is bad if there’s no investigation.

LBP is good but short but the whole philosophy is now create and share and make the game infinite, this isn’t going to happen if Mm and Sony are suffocating their devotees.

It’s one thing removing levels from PSN but it’s a disgrace levels are blocked on creator’s own machines. Sorry Sony, I thought it was me that invested a large sum of money buying your overpriced console and it was me that purchased the game - how dare you tell me what I can store and create on my machine.

This is dangerous ground they’re entering here, I thought this was 2008 not 1984.

  5. VinTheDean says:

Yeah. This whole thing is going to affect LBP community and the longevity of the game.

Theme based levels are really cool to play. Such as Batman, Ninja Warrior, Sonic, or WipeOut.

We now have to be even more creative concerning our levels.

An official explanation from either Sony but mainly from MM would be VERY VERY VERY nice.

  6. James says:

ummm havn’t had any levels deleted yet….

Just hope no one finds them offencive.

I do have to disagree with the lamo Pete.

Alot of the levels on the user created side are actually quite interesting. maybe none as interesting as the ones he has created (doink). But i just thought i would set the record straight and give more credit to all my fellow level creators.

Thats a shame though that they are deleting the level from your moon. Just take it offline, I think that would be enough. I will say this though……and with caution I sy this because I love my LBP….If they delete my rock n roll level from my moon, that I spent 14 hours working on. I will trade that game in to gamestop tomorrow.

but until that happens I’m going to laugh at all the people that talk smack abnout this game but have never even played it. it’s a cupfull of fun.

  7. if your scared that your level will be deleated, make one level, and befor publishing it, copy it on a different cator in your moon and name it something else with somthing, probally small, in there that the other one doesnt have like a random block or somthing. so if the one you publish is blocked, then you have a back up to work on.
im not 100% sure on this because my levels were not deleated but it seem very logical, right?

  8. steven says:

I had a level deleted not that long ago and it didnt have any sort of copyright infringement, and for that matter it used one of MM’s very own templates that i added a bunch of things on to, and for some reason it was deleted i dont think it had anything that was at all offensive. The only thing i can think of is that it was rather challenging so i wonder if someone didnt complain about it because it was to hard for them. In which case i think that MM should check your level and talk to you about what it is that is bothering people so tha ou have a chance to fix it. Not just straight up delete it.

  9. steven says:

Oh and people it might not be the smartest thing to tell people how you are hiding your copies of the levels if they are that intent on getting rid of them they will probably still delete them, and you are telling them how you hid them so now they can probably find them.

  10. Cedric says:

My level was moderated after being published for 3 days. I was so upset because for one it took me a week to create it and it was my first level. The thing that bothered me the most is that they didn’t even notify me or give me a reason why the deleted my level. As far as I know there wasn’t anything offensive or copywrittable on it. I am done with LBP and have deleted all the saves off my hard drive. I will support Media Molecule no more and come tommorrow I am going to trade this game and hunt down some locust and chimera.
