Looks like Microsoft has dealt the first blow to the Sony PS3 on the build up to the holiday season, as gears of War 2 has beaten LittleBigPlanet in games sales in the UK charts. As we well know both titles are exclusive to their consoles.
The shocking thing was LittleBigPlanet even had a couple of day’s head start; it was released on November 5, with GoW 2 being launched on the 7th. The sales data has been taken from the GfK Chart-Track.
Gears of War 2 entered the charts straight in at No.1, with Little Big Planet entering in at No.4. This has to be a shock for Sony, as they have done a lot of marketing on their new title, but it seems that gamers want action instead of taking control of a rag doll.

Gears 2 will sell LOADS, mostly in America because the yanks are gun crazy freaks. Little big planet is fresh and superb. Gears will be dead and gone while LBP will be a classic forever.
LBP is similar to the PS3 platform - it will only get better and better with time, unlike GOW which is already peaking. The thing ppl don’t realize is that LBP’s value will be much higher when ppl upload more user-created levels - it’s not worth as much buying now as it will be each succeeding month… there are no ‘games’ for it yet. It’ll sell when a friend says, ‘Hey, you’ve got to get LBP now! This new level someone uploaded last week is unreal!…’ Repeat this scenario several times for pretty much until the sequel comes out.
it is too bad about the pulling of copyright material, but it’s only certain materials. besides, people should be more original.
for me, LBP has been a long time in the coming. it fulfills on its promises and expectations and then some. it provides hours of entertainment and creative meandering. it exceeds as both a casual game to play with friends, strangers, girlfriends, wives, AND as a core-hardcore game, with the endless task of unlocking all items, and finally creating your own serious level.
since i have a family, lbp is ideal, because i don’t have to shield the content from anyone’s eyes, and my wife even enjoys playing with me.
i’ve played gears of war, it’s good fun, but to laud it over titles like LBP is absurd. sure, it sells well, and it’s darn good shootey fun, but it can’t be considered innovative by any means, or particularly creative. just polished.
the only game out this year that deserves any kind of “game of the year’ is little big planet. because it is truly a step in a new direction - a bold, accomplished, and seriously fun one.
my guess is that this title will go to fallout 3 in many cases.
never mind that Guitar hero WT is out today in UK , resistance 2 next week in UK also and a few more crackers for xmas
*****still regret buying a Wii though its pants unless you like the quirtky sports and fitness games . *****
Gears 1 & 2 are good although enjoyed first one better second one isnt that much of an evolution from the first one in tersm of gameplay or expansion ,
resistance 2 has 60 person skirmish mode. sweet!
Xbox 3-fix-me has a few good games , but i prefer to use my PS3 more now , my XBOX will be going on ebay along with gears 1 and 2 shortly
Has everyone that criticized Gears 2 as “boring” and “a polished version of the first game” actually ever played it?
I bet not.
First, it is WAY (and i mean WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY) better then the first one.
It has twice the weapons (everyone of which is perfectly balanced, being more or less useful depending on the type of enemy you are facing, and pretty fun to play), a lot of graphical improvements, MUCH more varied gameplay (there’s even a whole level in which you meet NO enemies, it’s more kinda platformer, one level requires avoiding turrets like in the first Metal Gear Solid, one requires to repair from mortal hail falling from the sky, there are bosses 40 times larger then the tv screen, you use 3 different types of veichles, etc… ), you can play the campaign in 2, and the co-op is THE BEST i’ve seen in 20 years of gaming, the story is more deep and compelling, with TRULY emotionally shocking twists, has a lot of little classy add-ons (use the enemies as shields, use heavy weapons, different fatalities depending on the weapons, different types of grenades and one-hand guns, etc…), and much, much more.
Second, it doesn’t get boring at all! After playing the campaign of the first game, i played some online then i got bored quickly.
This sequel feature a LOT of multi maps, and the multiplayer has amazingly nice game modes, like Horde, Capture the meatflag, Companion, each of them pretty original and a source of neverending fun.
I didn’t play LBP, but from what i saw it looks pretty fun to play, and an excellent game.
None the less, GOW2 is one of the legitimate candidates for GOTY for sure.
lbp is shurely part of this new trent of user created content, like farcry 2 and spore. its not a francine like Gears. its just the american game bigger is better, but clearly the runing time is very low, just a few hours. lbp is gona be big in the near future but we have to wait
These comments are full of ps3 fanboy’s who feel backed into a corner when their system selling title is clearly not doing its job as well as it was intended to… the point made here was that Gears 2 is the better seller, but when a ps3 fanboy reads this he jumps down the throats of the over 2 million people who bought gears 2 and accuses them of being old fashion in their approach to gaming… well, we’ve kinda got news for you, the whole innovation thing in gaming… well it only gets non-hardcore gamers excited… typical example, the Wii, only non hardcore gamers jumped up and wet their pants over it, and now they’re getting over it, games like gears shows why gaming is a somewhat exclusive to those who have a passion for it… these ‘innovative lovers’ seem to be forgetting that shooters, not ragdoll games are the biggest sellers and the reason why so many people go online to show off their skill. I’m not saying innovation is not welcome, it more than is, nothing is better than something refreshing, just look at bioshock, thats was a nice innovative and refreshing shooter, however don’t try to replace the genre, that would make for some very angry fans
yeah and i think we can all agree that if gears was for ps3 and resistance was for 360 this story would be the exact same except the names would be switched
if gears was for ps3 and littlebigplanet was for 360***
Sadly, PS3 owners are a bit offended by the margain of defeat LBP was dealt. I have both consoles and I dislike LBP. It’s just as repetitive as everyone thinks Gears of War 2 is. Saying it will take time to take off is bull considering many people are waiting for the next game. Such as Killzone 2 or God of war and will toss out this game just as quick.
I get so sick of fanboyism. Innovation doesn’t = a great game. It’s essentially a building block for the future games of the genre. Sequels are not meant to be new. Frankly Resistance 2 is almost identical to 1. just as gears 2 is identical to 1 but that is not bad. People would be complaining about huge changes or no changes. There is no middle ground ( only exception is MGS) only series to change but not in a gigantic way.
Get over sales figures and play the game. Don’t criticize others for not liking it.
You play LBP, I’ll play gears 2, fallout 3, and MGO.
