Japan: Sony PS3 outsells combined Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii figures
Filed under: Gaming

Japan’s sales figures are in for games consoles sold last week. And it seems that the Sony PS3 is finally starting to do very well on their home turf. These latest sales figures of games consoles have been supplied by Media Center, and it looks as though the Sony PlayStation is outselling the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.
This past week in Japan, the Sony PS3 sold 39,587 units, the Wii sold 23,123 units, and the Xbox shifted just 6,119 units. The biggest sellers were still the handhelds, with the Nintendo being top of the list, shifting 171,925 units.
The PS3 outsold the combined figures of both the Wii and Xbox 360, as sales figures of the PlayStation 3 jumped up by 907% from last week. Is this just a one off, or will this now be an ongoing trend?
Sales figures for the week of October 27th – November 2nd:
- Nintendo DSi: 171,925
- Sony PSP: 50,358
- Sony PS3: 39,587
- Nintendo Wii: 23,123
- Nintendo DS Lite: 16,369
- Sony PS2: 6,714
- Microsoft Xbox 360: 6,119

Week In Japan: Sony PSP 95,487 units then Nintendo DS, Wii, PlayStation 2 & 3, Xbox 360
Xbox 360 increase sales, Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 drop

I think this is only a temporary flux in sales. The PS3 is a powerful machine but it has no chance of winning the console war. I realy beleive that Sony’s dominance in the world of video games is over.
I agree with Andrew. It’s not that Sony can’t do well, but they aren’t going to grab the market share that they had last generation. That monopoly is firmly over.
Sony should exit the gaming market by next generation because I think Nintendos next machine will be a Monster.
Wow the new DSi sold a lot damn thats good over 150000 damn
I wonder if Eternal Sonata and Valkyria Chronicles had anything to do with this… if they were recently released for PS3 in Japan as they were here. A few good Japanese titles could do a world of good for Sony over there… but they don’t seem too interested.
Going have to disagree with sam. The playstation 3 is aimed for more traditional players. The wii is a “universal” console for audience who don’t consider themselves as “gamers”. See the difference?
Also no one should think that one console should win over another.
Sony is like Nintendos annoying little brother.
Follows everywhere it goes and mocks everything it does.
Sony dominance in the world of video games is NOT over. It just started. Upcoming PS3 games wil make PS3 sales WAY better. Sony beat Nintendo in last 2 gens and it will beat Nintendo AGAIN.
This recent PS3 lead over Wii in Japan may be partly due to saturation of the Japanese market. Almost everyone probably has a Wii already. Another reason is probably inclusion of a blu-ray player in the PS3 and consumers playing catch-up now that the format war is over. Why not get a gaming console along with your new blu-ray player?
However, in the much larger U.S. market, Wii is still trouncing PS3 sales almost 4 to 1! I think Andysw correctly states one of the primary reasons–appeal to a wider audience. With its blu-ray player, superior processor, 80GB hard drive and built-in wireless Internet connection (can you say Vudu?), PS3 should be the new broadly popular console, not Wii.
Maybe Sony management still dreaming about regaining dominance among traditional gamers. With a superior console and new games arriving in 2009, their dream may come true, but it won’t matter. Nintendo is selling to an audience that is inherently 3 to 4 times larger. Hardcore gamers sit for hours shooting, crashing and bombing everything in sight. The rest of the world has a much wider range of interests and far less spare time, so the idea of combining play with physical movement is key.
At the root of expanded audiences for the Wii console is the fact that Sony and Microsoft have been leapfrogged by a revolution in virtual reality. Computer games have benefited from improvements in graphics, sound, tactile feedback and multi-player functionality. PS3 and Xbox 360 excel in these areas. But having games respond to the movement of your body eclipses recent improvement in these other areas and keeps Nintendo Wii selling out at stores around the world.
Correction: in the much larger U.S. market, Wii is still trouncing PS3 sales almost 3 to 1.
