White Spaces: FCC say yes
By: Peter Chubb | November 5, 2008 | Leave a CommentThe row over the use of White Spaces has been going on for some time now; companies such as Google and Microsoft were all for it, while Television companies were worried that it might interfere with their broadcasts. The decision was down to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), and they have now said yes, as they voted to authorize the unlicensed use of white spaces.
The FCC has always been for the use of White Spaces, as it will help to increase access to the Internet. The National Association of Broadcasters has been against the use of White Spaces from the outset, so are not happy about the result.
A number of broadcasters have said that if White Spaces are freed up to be used for Internet, then it could interfere with TV reception, as well as wireless microphones. FCC Chairman, Kevin Martin has said that the use of White Spaces have included safeguards which should help protect both TV broadcasts and wireless microphones.
