CNN features hologram interviews: technology from Star trek

By: Peter Chubb | November 5, 2008 | 2 Comments

Yesterday was a big day for not only the people of America, but also for those at CNN. So not only has America elected their first black President, but CNN have now featured hologram interviews. Many are saying that it is like something from Star Wars, but talking to someone directly via a hologram was something from Star Trek Deep Space Nine, which was installed on the Defiant, man I’m a geek.

During CNN’s coverage of the 2008 Election, they had the new Magic Wall, but that technology looked old compared to the hologram technology that they were showing off. If CNN use this technology more, then they have taken a huge jump over other news networks.

Times are changing fast for news reporting, to be the best you have to feature all the latest technology to help report the news. The 2000 and 2004 elections, CNN used the basic White Board, 2008 was so different this time around, and makes you wonder what will happen in the 2012 Election, maybe a Woman President as well.

This was not a hologram. It was technologically impressive camera and computer use. If you had been present in the studio at CNN you would not have seen a shiny floating apparition. The “holographic” effect was wholly contained within computers. There was no spatial reassembling of the image in the studio.

Who cares? It’s still pretty impressive.
