It is no secret that a number of companies are interested in the use of white spaces, the television spectrum, as it can be used for wireless Internet services. Microsoft has now shown their interest and has now asked the FCC to allow them unlicensed use of the spectrum.
Microsoft chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie has said that Bill Gates is to talk to FCC commissioner Robert McDowell via telephone, and hope that he can persuade him to offer his support for the use of the white space.
Mundie said that by opening up the use of white spaces, it will then put the United States at the forefront of deploying mobile broadband technology. Mundie has compared the use of white spaces to that of Wi-Fi, as that also operates on unlicensed spectrum.
