Microsoft Windows Azure: It’s not trademarked

Earlier today we reported news of a new cloud-based operating system from Microsoft called “Windows Azure”, and in the last hour we have learned via Computer World that Microsoft has not registered a trademark for Windows Azure.

The site Azure.com was registered by Microsoft Corp over 14 years ago (October 1994), but it looks like the trademark for “Azure Services Platform” or “Windows Azure” has not been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Microsoft certainly planned ahead with the domain side of things, they registered the above name 14 years ago and the domain Azure.net back in November 2003, so what’s up with the Azure trademark and how can Microsoft miss this?

Let us know what you think about this and Windows Azure in the comments.
