Hands-on: Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1 PS2

This is Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1 and it’s one for old school gamers, I can remember the days of Capcom’s Street Fighter in the arcades and how we use to meet for “winner stays on” games. They were the days of bad graphics but amazing gameplay.

Back then graphics was still appreciated even if nothing compared to current video games, it was all about gameplay back then and maybe that’s why the Wii has become so popular.

Another classic arcade game was Fatal Fury and this is Battle Archives Vol.1, it may not be for the gamer that has never played the series; they may be more interested in the Volume 2 (better graphics and gameplay). The old-school graphics and sound offer real value for those that love Fatal Fury, although this collection starts with the very early NeoGeo development.

The original Fatal Fury is extremely primitive by today’s gameplay and graphics, remembering that the Fatal Fury series started in 1991. Even the last game in the collection is 1995’s Fatal Fury 3, but this version changes a lot with most of the series foundations thrown away. FF3 has a new and sometimes confusing gameplay system and a different graphical presentation of the series.

If you are a dedicated SNK gamer or enjoy collecting fighting games of all eras, then you will love Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1. If you’re a casual fighting gamer then you may want to check out Volume 2 of the archives collection, which features the three better games after Fatal Fury 3.

Main Features of Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1:

  • Four complete FATAL FURY games
  • Switch the Soundtracks of all 4 titles between Original and Arranged compositions
  • Create your own player character with the Color Edit function
  • Multiple fighting modes: single player vs. the computer, 2-player head-to-head or 2-player co-op.
  • The first series to incorporate two-plane fighting in a 2D system.

Check out the two-gameplay videos below, the first shows Volume 1 and the second shows gameplay of Volume 2. Look to pay around $12.99 on Amazon or £16.99 in the UK (Release Date: 31 Oct 2008).
