PS3: Sony’s Last Console and Xbox 360 Blamed

While many gamers would agree that the next model of Xbox is needed before the Sony PS4, I am sure hardly anyone would think that the Sony PS3 should be the last games system from Sony.
This is what Blend Games thinks may be possible, in an article titled “PS3 Could Be Sony’s Last Console”, they said that the “PS3 has been a financial pain in Sony’s side”.
Now we would agree that Sony has lost money so far on the Playstation 3 thanks to going with Blu-ray built-in, but to say that it would be Sony’s last console seems a bit far-fetched.
While Sony’s profits may drop sharply thanks to many factors including recession, it’s a BIG statement to think they would never launch another games system after such a big take-up of the PS3 and PS2. Plus there are so many fans that would buy a Sony system over a Microsoft one any day, Microsoft may be good at software but it shows how weak they have been with hardware (RROD anyone).
The Xbox 360 has hit a figure that will allow many more people to buy it come Christmas, this will help Microsoft outsell the PS3 unless Sony make another price cut. Hit the read link below to read Blend Games full story, and let us know below in the comments what you think.
The consumer needs the future Xbox and Playstation, with both systems in the marketplace we get more competition and this again will benefit the consumer. No more Sony games systems…now that’s laughable.

What a load of old tripe! Whoever wrote that article clearly doesn’t have a clue!
Every console Sony has ever made has lost an absolute fortune at the start, they can afford to do this because their consoles last for 8-10 years. In addition the PS3 compliments their other business - next gen consoles help drive sales of Bravia HDTV’s, the PS3 helped ensure Blu-ray became the next format - saving Sony the millions it would have cost to scrap it (see Toshiba) and giving them a potentially lucrative new revenue stream. It really annoys me when people ignorant to how business works look at things in such black and white ways - PlayStation is probably the most important brand Sony own, and brand power is 9/10th of the law in the businesses Sony operate. Also look at how sales of the PSP have picked up since the PS3 launched and it’s various complementary services. And let’s not forget that Sony have 23 or so successful game developers/publishers.
So that’s Sony covered, now what about Microsoft? Clearly the person who wrote that article as fallen for all the big talking spin MS put out. Let’s think - the 360 still cost them a fortune to develop, though granted not quite as much as the PS3, the 360 was plagued hardware faults and the warranty issue that has cost them billions, now they have slashed their prices and sell at a loss (do you honestly think the 360 Arcade makes them any money?!), they spend an absolute fortune on advertising, and let’s not forget the huge sums of money they pay developers just to get games on their system or more recently to pay for DLC. Don’t be under any illusions that the 360 is some sort of Wii-style success story, any success the 360 has is a result of Microsoft’s open wallet policy. And remember now that 3rd party titles are getting hard to buy MS only have around 3 developers to rely on.
Then let’s look at sales - MS launched the 360 a year early ( 1 1/2 years in some regions) and it’s sold 22M or so, the PS3 launched a year or more later and has sold 16M, in other words the PS3 is selling at a faster rate. Some people really do have a funny idea what counts as a failure! If the PS3 ends up outselling the 360 by the end of this cycle it’s more likely it will be Microsoft that will be wondering whether it’s worth continuing, not Sony.
Then you have to consider what MS will had to their next console? HD movie disc playback? High capacity storage medium? More advanced for of processor? In other words all the things the PS3 already has. More likely it will be an incremental PC style upgrade to piggy back on PC Games. I can’t see the next Xbox doing anything outside of the box, look what they’ve done for far of the 360:
Scene It = Buzz
Lips = SingStar
In the Movies = EyeToy
Avatars = Miis
NXE = the love child of the XMB and Wii Channels
In other words they’re completely devoid of original ideas unless they can buy them or copy them.
Now look at the PS3 - still hugely popular despite what the fanboy Sony-hating blog posters like to claim - it has an unique cutting-edge processor that people are now starting to understand - it has more than ample storage - it has the makings of an very compelling online community infrastructure. In other words Sony is highly likely to keep these core technologies in the PS4 meaning it will be much cheaper to make and much easier for developers to get up and running.
To say any of the big 3 won’t be in the next gen race is frankly ill thought-out stupidity, and if I had to put money on one withdrawing, my money would be on Microsoft before Sony…
Hey, shut the **** up asshole! The 360 pwns the PS3 hands down.
Just because your a fanboy!
Look at ps3 sales, it hasnt got much life left
I’m a 360 owner with no plans right know to buy a PS3, that could easily change in the future if Sony come out with some exclusives that are compelling enough to me as i have no blind loyalty to any particular brand. I find it quite worrying that Sony may drop out of the console race, not because i care about them as a company but because more competition helps to keep prices down and promotes innovation.
It’s still early yet to speculate about Sony’s future as a console maker but i must admit tthat i have entertained the thought that they may drop out of the console race to concentrate their efforts on trying to beat Nintendo in the handheld market. It’s impossible for any of us to predict the future of Sony’s product range when they themselves have probably not made any concrete decisions yet but i hope that either they stay in the race or someone else comes in to fill the void as less competition would be bad news for consumers.
I think the xbox fanboy is most likely a 13-18 year old who can’t afford a PS3. I mean anyone who wants a 360 can easily afford it so the question is why doesn’t everyone own an xbox? All the hate is due to jealousy or just gullibility. The PS3 has year over year increase in sales of 100% where as the 360 have not beat last years numbers 3 times this year, twice in the last two months. The price drop is an act of desperation by microsoft to try and compete. Let’s not forget that the PS3 has sold 170000 more consoles this year in the states than the 360. You know gears is going to be fun and I will play it but after trying the resistance beta it wont be for a while. Resistance is better than COD4 for online, by a lot. 60 player online with no lag is just insane and the maps are huge.
The Future of Sega, did you write the artical mentioned. Cos your mentallity seems to fit the profile of the writer. U know that ps3 owners comments are spot on, u cant argue with that. so all you do is throw in a closed statment that can not possibly have an answer 2 it, to try and make yourself feel better about your cheap console. Get a Job, Then get a PS3 you tight c*nt.
I’m a 360 fan (never fanboy) who’s over 30 and could buy a PS3 if I so desired. I don’t want a Playstation nor have I ever wanted one since the first one launched. Sure, there are certain games that they have which I would like to play (God of War for example) but there is not enough to make me want to plunk down the $$ for another console. I have a 360 and PC that I game on and my kids have a Wii their own PC. The few games that I’ve wanted to try on PS3 that are exclusives have been Motostorm, Heavenly Sword, and MGS4. That’s not enough to make me go out and pick up a new console. I’m very happy with my 360 and have been since launch. I’ve been on XBL since the beta days and don’t regret one year of the fee. I don’t care who sells more systems, I just care about the games that I like to play and right now they’re on the 360. I don’t care if I can get 60 people online in Resistance, I would’t play it very long and would likely prefer CounterStrike which I’ve been playing for years now.Looking at the quality of multiplatform games, most of them are either neck and neck or give a slight edge to the 360, check the professional reviews and not those fanboy rants for that.
Trying to type a person by their choice in console makes no sense to me. Just because I prefer the 360 you think that I can’t afford a PS3 or that I’m not an adult? Seriously….. Do you think all Chinese people eat nothing but rice and practice marshal arts all day? I think anyone who would post a statement like yours is just blind to the world of people with differing opinions and you are the one who needs to wake up. Enjoy your console choice and accept the fact that not everyone wants what you have. In fact, I don’t personally know any PS3 owners who don’t have a 360 as well. I know there are many out there but most of my friends can afford both and those that want both have them…. On that same note, I know many more 360 owners who don’t have a PS3. Your point is pointless.
@zs450
The fact that you are ‘over 30′ but feel the need to defend your choice of console is indicative of having the same mentality of a typical 13-18 year old Xbox owner.
Just sayin’.
The PS3 is a poor games machine; nice spiffy processor, but that doesn’t translate well to how games utilise a CPU. Games dont use much multithreading, so splitting tasks across the cores is not something that can always be done. Also, the read times on the bluray are terrible, thats why PS3 games install to the Harddrive. The fillrate is also nowhere near what the xbox 360 can do.. Lastly, the controller is horrible, its too small for an adults hand and the analogue sticks make your thumbs bend downwards in an unnatural and uncomfortable position.
Don’t say 13-18 year old own 360’s. Cos Im 15 and have owned a playstation 3 since the day it launched in the UK. Have never even imagined buying a 360. Why? eventually games that support all 7 cores will come out and then ps3 will kick 360’s ass…………………O yeah….and online is FREE
