PS3: Sony’s Last Console and Xbox 360 Blamed

PS3: Sony’s Last Console and Xbox 360 Blamed

By: Daniel Chubb | October 25, 2008 | 33 Comments

While many gamers would agree that the next model of Xbox is needed before the Sony PS4, I am sure hardly anyone would think that the Sony PS3 should be the last games system from Sony.

This is what Blend Games thinks may be possible, in an article titled “PS3 Could Be Sony’s Last Console”, they said that the “PS3 has been a financial pain in Sony’s side”.

Now we would agree that Sony has lost money so far on the Playstation 3 thanks to going with Blu-ray built-in, but to say that it would be Sony’s last console seems a bit far-fetched.

While Sony’s profits may drop sharply thanks to many factors including recession, it’s a BIG statement to think they would never launch another games system after such a big take-up of the PS3 and PS2. Plus there are so many fans that would buy a Sony system over a Microsoft one any day, Microsoft may be good at software but it shows how weak they have been with hardware (RROD anyone).

The Xbox 360 has hit a figure that will allow many more people to buy it come Christmas, this will help Microsoft outsell the PS3 unless Sony make another price cut. Hit the read link below to read Blend Games full story, and let us know below in the comments what you think.

The consumer needs the future Xbox and Playstation, with both systems in the marketplace we get more competition and this again will benefit the consumer. No more Sony games systems…now that’s laughable.

What a load of old tripe! Whoever wrote that article clearly doesn’t have a clue!

Every console Sony has ever made has lost an absolute fortune at the start, they can afford to do this because their consoles last for 8-10 years. In addition the PS3 compliments their other business – next gen consoles help drive sales of Bravia HDTV’s, the PS3 helped ensure Blu-ray became the next format – saving Sony the millions it would have cost to scrap it (see Toshiba) and giving them a potentially lucrative new revenue stream. It really annoys me when people ignorant to how business works look at things in such black and white ways – PlayStation is probably the most important brand Sony own, and brand power is 9/10th of the law in the businesses Sony operate. Also look at how sales of the PSP have picked up since the PS3 launched and it’s various complementary services. And let’s not forget that Sony have 23 or so successful game developers/publishers.

So that’s Sony covered, now what about Microsoft? Clearly the person who wrote that article as fallen for all the big talking spin MS put out. Let’s think – the 360 still cost them a fortune to develop, though granted not quite as much as the PS3, the 360 was plagued hardware faults and the warranty issue that has cost them billions, now they have slashed their prices and sell at a loss (do you honestly think the 360 Arcade makes them any money?!), they spend an absolute fortune on advertising, and let’s not forget the huge sums of money they pay developers just to get games on their system or more recently to pay for DLC. Don’t be under any illusions that the 360 is some sort of Wii-style success story, any success the 360 has is a result of Microsoft’s open wallet policy. And remember now that 3rd party titles are getting hard to buy MS only have around 3 developers to rely on.

Then let’s look at sales – MS launched the 360 a year early ( 1 1/2 years in some regions) and it’s sold 22M or so, the PS3 launched a year or more later and has sold 16M, in other words the PS3 is selling at a faster rate. Some people really do have a funny idea what counts as a failure! If the PS3 ends up outselling the 360 by the end of this cycle it’s more likely it will be Microsoft that will be wondering whether it’s worth continuing, not Sony.

Then you have to consider what MS will had to their next console? HD movie disc playback? High capacity storage medium? More advanced for of processor? In other words all the things the PS3 already has. More likely it will be an incremental PC style upgrade to piggy back on PC Games. I can’t see the next Xbox doing anything outside of the box, look what they’ve done for far of the 360:
    Scene It = Buzz
    Lips = SingStar
    In the Movies = EyeToy
    Avatars = Miis
NXE = the love child of the XMB and Wii Channels
In other words they’re completely devoid of original ideas unless they can buy them or copy them.

Now look at the PS3 – still hugely popular despite what the fanboy Sony-hating blog posters like to claim – it has an unique cutting-edge processor that people are now starting to understand – it has more than ample storage – it has the makings of an very compelling online community infrastructure. In other words Sony is highly likely to keep these core technologies in the PS4 meaning it will be much cheaper to make and much easier for developers to get up and running.

To say any of the big 3 won’t be in the next gen race is frankly ill thought-out stupidity, and if I had to put money on one withdrawing, my money would be on Microsoft before Sony…

  • The Future of Sega

Hey, shut the **** up asshole! The 360 pwns the PS3 hands down.

  • Bob Jones

    Just because your a fanboy!

Look at ps3 sales, it hasnt got much life left

  • Peter

I’m a 360 owner with no plans right know to buy a PS3, that could easily change in the future if Sony come out with some exclusives that are compelling enough to me as i have no blind loyalty to any particular brand. I find it quite worrying that Sony may drop out of the console race, not because i care about them as a company but because more competition helps to keep prices down and promotes innovation.
It’s still early yet to speculate about Sony’s future as a console maker but i must admit tthat i have entertained the thought that they may drop out of the console race to concentrate their efforts on trying to beat Nintendo in the handheld market. It’s impossible for any of us to predict the future of Sony’s product range when they themselves have probably not made any concrete decisions yet but i hope that either they stay in the race or someone else comes in to fill the void as less competition would be bad news for consumers.

I think the xbox fanboy is most likely a 13-18 year old who can’t afford a PS3. I mean anyone who wants a 360 can easily afford it so the question is why doesn’t everyone own an xbox? All the hate is due to jealousy or just gullibility. The PS3 has year over year increase in sales of 100% where as the 360 have not beat last years numbers 3 times this year, twice in the last two months. The price drop is an act of desperation by microsoft to try and compete. Let’s not forget that the PS3 has sold 170000 more consoles this year in the states than the 360. You know gears is going to be fun and I will play it but after trying the resistance beta it wont be for a while. Resistance is better than COD4 for online, by a lot. 60 player online with no lag is just insane and the maps are huge.

  • Nate

The Future of Sega, did you write the artical mentioned. Cos your mentallity seems to fit the profile of the writer. U know that ps3 owners comments are spot on, u cant argue with that. so all you do is throw in a closed statment that can not possibly have an answer 2 it, to try and make yourself feel better about your cheap console. Get a Job, Then get a PS3 you tight c*nt.

  • zs450

I’m a 360 fan (never fanboy) who’s over 30 and could buy a PS3 if I so desired. I don’t want a Playstation nor have I ever wanted one since the first one launched. Sure, there are certain games that they have which I would like to play (God of War for example) but there is not enough to make me want to plunk down the $$ for another console. I have a 360 and PC that I game on and my kids have a Wii their own PC. The few games that I’ve wanted to try on PS3 that are exclusives have been Motostorm, Heavenly Sword, and MGS4. That’s not enough to make me go out and pick up a new console. I’m very happy with my 360 and have been since launch. I’ve been on XBL since the beta days and don’t regret one year of the fee. I don’t care who sells more systems, I just care about the games that I like to play and right now they’re on the 360. I don’t care if I can get 60 people online in Resistance, I would’t play it very long and would likely prefer CounterStrike which I’ve been playing for years now.Looking at the quality of multiplatform games, most of them are either neck and neck or give a slight edge to the 360, check the professional reviews and not those fanboy rants for that.
Trying to type a person by their choice in console makes no sense to me. Just because I prefer the 360 you think that I can’t afford a PS3 or that I’m not an adult? Seriously….. Do you think all Chinese people eat nothing but rice and practice marshal arts all day? I think anyone who would post a statement like yours is just blind to the world of people with differing opinions and you are the one who needs to wake up. Enjoy your console choice and accept the fact that not everyone wants what you have. In fact, I don’t personally know any PS3 owners who don’t have a 360 as well. I know there are many out there but most of my friends can afford both and those that want both have them…. On that same note, I know many more 360 owners who don’t have a PS3. Your point is pointless.

  • Kman

    @zs450

The fact that you are ‘over 30′ but feel the need to defend your choice of console is indicative of having the same mentality of a typical 13-18 year old Xbox owner.

    Just sayin’.

  • R

The PS3 is a poor games machine; nice spiffy processor, but that doesn’t translate well to how games utilise a CPU. Games dont use much multithreading, so splitting tasks across the cores is not something that can always be done. Also, the read times on the bluray are terrible, thats why PS3 games install to the Harddrive. The fillrate is also nowhere near what the xbox 360 can do.. Lastly, the controller is horrible, its too small for an adults hand and the analogue sticks make your thumbs bend downwards in an unnatural and uncomfortable position.

  • Addnan

Don’t say 13-18 year old own 360′s. Cos Im 15 and have owned a playstation 3 since the day it launched in the UK. Have never even imagined buying a 360. Why? eventually games that support all 7 cores will come out and then ps3 will kick 360′s ass…………………O yeah….and online is FREE

  • Joshua

Doesnt everyone understand that people, like our friend “ps3 owner” don’t really think “outside the box.” Fanboys will be just that, and personally, I HAD a 60 gig ps3 at one time and well, it LACKED. The funny thing is, I love the OS in the ps3 way over the xbox blades, and the blu-ray was a nice addition, but when it came to the games I wanted to play, Sony just didnt have them at all.

Resistance and in my opinion, Ridge racer 7 along with folklore were the only REALLY good titles at the time. But now there are titles like: Saints Row 2, Bioshock(which I think was a blast to sony, since it came out over a year ago for the xbox360, but with DLC that has NOTHING to do with the storymode on the ps3), and Dead space.

All these new games ive had on my 360 and had no wanting or craving to get them on a ps3. Oh, and if you want to talk about “copying what others do” in the game industry, atleast get it right.

Buzz is and has been a really, REALLY low budget game, that has sold a few 360′s, not ps3′s. Lips is better, no FAR better then singstar, for a few good reasons. ONE: You can sing along to ANY song in your OWN library, not just set songs on a disk. Have something on your ipod or Zune? plug it into the 360 and sing along to it. Farcry from singstar.

Hmmm, the Eyetoy eh? It got MORE play out of the ps2 then the ps3 so far. Off the top of my head, I can count over 5 games on xbox arcade that use the vision camra, over the eyetoys 2 games on the ps3.

Furthermore, think of the Avatars as an “evolved” version of the “mii’s.” Last time I checked, you could not ADD a gamer picture to a Nintendo “mii” and make that gamer pic the avatars shirt, now can you? Or how about winning achivements on Xbox Live, and also winning new styles of clothing to add to your avatar?

Besides, Nintendo Mii’s are like SD(super deformed) characters, and the Avatars on the new MS dashboard are NOT SD characters, but more of a “picture of who you are all together as a gamer and a person. And the NXB I won’t even start on, because the XMB is completly different. End of story.
Also , if you are good enough to acutally read and do some research( mainly follow links) you can see that The head of Sony was praising that the Xbox360 did better this year then their own ps3. A ploy? maybe, but it doesnt rule out the fact Sony wants MS to win this year for sales.

And the way the economy has been recenlly, if I were Sony, id be scared. honestly. Rumors fly, like always and ofcourse MS is supposedly releasing a slimmer 360 next year, with a better chipset and almost non-noise making fan, while the new xbox is underway.

The ps3 is still a good envistment though, with its blu-ray player still being 200, if you think that 400 is the full price of the full system.(200 for the game system, and 200 for the blu-ray player) That is untill MS acutally announces its blu0ray for 150 bucks, which has been confirmed by Toshiba and Samsung, since their merger recently, despite MS’s hardcore: ” we don’t want or need a blu-ray player” talk.

  • StatingTheObvious

Hey guys, did you see Sony’s financial forecast for this financial year. Did you see Microsoft’s results?

Sonys proft prediction down from 2.4 billion 1.5 billion dollars (2009 March Ending Financial year)

Microsoft made a 4.3 dollar profit for the last quarter (Yes, just a quarter).

Sony are unlikely to drop the PS3 or PS4. The brand is too strong. The PSP is selling well over here in Japan.

The bottom line is the shareholders, the market etc… will determine if there will be a PS4 or a Xbox 720.

    oh and im 30 btw

Kman, I’m not here to defend a console. I typically don’t post when I read this type of news. I posted because I am fed up with stereotypes which goes far beyond console ownership. This whole, my system is better than yours B.S. is dumb to me honestly. I have people ask me all of the time what they should get and I tell them to buy what they like, plain and simple. If you go by who has sold more, the Wii is trouncing both MS and Sony, but when it comes down to specs the console is a joke in comparision. Wii owners on the other hand don’t care! It’s a great console and just fun even without being competetive with the others. it’s a waste of time to argue about something like this article. If Sony does produce a PS4, I’m all for it because that forces Microsoft and anyone else that wants to get into the race to compete and that just makes a better experience for all of us. If they don’t produce one, I hope they team with Nintendo to put out something big time. I don’t want a Playstation, but, I can respect what they’ve done for gaming and don’t want to see that stop. Either way, it’s not going to hurt my feelings.

Sony won’t stop making consoles as they are too big a brand… they could potentially dominate the market if they wanted to, they just need to make a better console… same with the XBox 360… They’re too similar to compete.

  • DaveBG

I bet the Sega guys are laughing their b*llocks off at the thought that Playstation has ended up wrecking Sony.

    Poetic justice.

  • Joshua

“Sony won’t stop making consoles as they are too big a brand… they could potentially dominate the market if they wanted to, they just need to make a better console.. same with the xbox 360…”
    ————————————————–

Look, the SAME could be said about SEGA’s older consoles, the saturn and espically the Dreamcast. The dream cast was always way a head of its time for processeing power, but they (SEGA of America) didnt market right over here and boom, a dead awesome system.

The ps3 and 360 are really good consoles. But they arn’t good consoles to PC and MAC gamers though. Think about it really. If you own a top PC or MAC, sure those will own the current systems, but there is still a lot to take into consideration as well.

The ps3 has many cores to program for, and it didn’t help that SONY kept all the coding IN JAPANESE for the American programmers to deal with. This makes it 3 times as hard, unless you know fluent Japanese/coding.

I would’ve stuck to my orginal 60 gig model if I would’ve known that devs couldve worked with no problem on the system without hiring like 12 translators to get all the coding into English just to produce one single game for a power-house system.

Sony has kicked themselfs in the teeth this year and since the PS3 came out.

First off is the coding/translation stuff.

Secondly is the backwards compatable ps3′s being yanked off the shelf’s. Too many people are still looking to play their old ps2 titles on the ps3 system

Third:the PS2 is STILL going strong here in the USA.
I know this because I work at a GameStop. I see it all the time. Parents wanting to get a cheap game for their kid and then heading over to the ps2 section and picking up a game or two, instead of getting one for their dad’s ps3, with better everything.

The people that own a ps3, still buy more ps2 games as well.

I find this funny because if Sony would’ve WAITED on realeasing the ps3 till this november, WITH backwards compatiblity and the price tag it has now, AND translated all the coding for the major game devs over here to make it 100 percent more accesable to develop games on, it wouldve beat out MS no problem.

A lot of the time people and fanboys/girls want a system released to combat a new game for the current system that is out. The thing to do though is release it AFTER a hit game comes out for a rival system to release your system, and by that time it comes out, you already have a handful of game devs for it, all the coding is worked out and so forth.

Then that is the time to let everyone know your system rocks socks.
M$’s issues have always been with software. Heck, look at windows and the Zune software. But as always, first come first serve software(and hardware in M$’s instance) has been trial and error. But honestly don’t blame M$ for it. Its standard that anything first gen will have it’s issues. Need I say more Apple?

Every company that puts out a new console will have issues. Overheating, freezing of games, etc. UNLESS they test run them way before a public release. Then they could have time to fix everything before loosing millions of dollars and having law suits aginst them all the time.

Most of the companies don’t go this route though. Sure the prototypes are there like M$’s huge silver xbox system back in the day of the orginal xbox, and the many prototypes for the ps3(remember the boomerang controller?) but it’s usally at production lines where it all comes together..no pun intended.

Fact still remains. no matter what system is put out, it will always have issues. Espically the first models of the systems/hardware/software. Also, have you noticed why “hackers/modders are shun by huge corps? Its because the corps realize that their stuff can be fine tuned and fixed for better, and they see this happening and don’t like it because they dont get credit for it. lol

Its only wrong if they didnt think of it first. lol

  • Joshua

    @ Dave:

I agree. lol I never liked SEGA of America. SEGA of Japan was ALWAYS where everything was. SOA made poor choices, like when they put Working Designs (famed translation and group that made Lunar The Silver Star) in the very back of an E3 show while the Sega Saturn was starting to take off in the USA.

Then Working Designs saw that Japanese developer, Game Arts, the main group that made Lunar, and many other RPGs for the SEGA systems, turn to Sony, and then…BAM…Sega lost a good chunk of 3td party support.

They (being SEGA of America) said: “Gamers don’t want RPG’s from Japan. They want action games like doom.” quoted by SOA’s marketing group eons ago. I still may have that website. saved. lol Peter Moore was, I believe one of the very few that wanted import over here while he worked with SOA, he truly believed in gamers on both sides of the world, and had many plans on making them come together for online play.

Too bad he “quit ” MS. =p

  • you

Meh it’s the games. The 360 and even the original xbox put out a ton of high quality games.Even Nintendos rep is built on games(why are they dropping the ball on the dust collecter,i mean wii).Granted MS does some screwy stuff with storage, streaming limitations, etc. And the 360 has had hardware probs……
There are som many great xbox titles i can’t remeber them all.Sony has many more games total(counting ps1-2) but 98% of them are garbage.

  • you

“Third:the PS2 is STILL going strong here in the USA.

No titles, high prices what do you expect.i’ve never seen a gamestop or any other game store that had a bigger ps-2 or 3 section than the 360 section.
Most game store people tell me it’s the 360 games that move.

I’m a 360 owner who just had the Red Ring Of Death, last month. I called Microsoft, I was sent shipping labels and my Xbox 360 was off to be repaired within 24 hours of the problem. I recieved a NEW console in less than two weeks, along with an extra 90 day warranty and a 30 day gold membership to Xbox Live and an apology.
    Not bad.
When my PS2 broke down, it cost me 200 dollars to get it repaired. I had to send the system away at my own cost. I ended up getting a “refurbished unit”, which I believe is French, for “Some other poor jerk’s headache”
The replacement PS2 broke down 3 days later. I sent it off again at my own expense. I will spare you the breakdown but I ended up sending it back 5 times and I was without a console for 6 out of 7 months. I never received an apology…a perk…..an explanation or a new console.
At least when Microsoft makes faulty hardware, they take responsibility for it. I won’t bother with the fanboy rants of which system is better. For me, it’s all about service.
If I want quality service, unbeatable online play and no headaches, I will continue to buy Microsoft.
If I want a Blu Ray player….I will go to Future Shop, walk right past the PS3 and anything Sony and buy one. Trust me. Accountability matters. So does service. I told Sony when my system broke for thr 6th time, to keep it. I also said I would scream this story for years to anyone who would listen. Up yours Sony. Thanks for your time :)

  • slow17motion

360 has better games and is a better option for the serious gamer.

  • Xbox 360 and a PS3

I have both consoles, and so far its he PS3 bringing me more enjoyment. Microsoft hypes this and hypes that, and you know what?. There were all boring. Gears of war and its sequel has only excelled in the graphics department. Halo 3 was just the same as Halo 2. Dead rising was really nice but not for long as it got reppetetive. I dont know if Xbox 360 exclusives are just not my type of game or are just praised for absolutely nothing so I’ll still look around for those. Despite poor performances from the 360 exclusives I usually always buy a game on the Xbox 360 over the PS3 because its always significantly cheaper in my country and almost always runs better.

When it comes to the PS3 exclusives I usually have a blast. I remember staying up until two o’clock in the morning just playing Metal Gear Solid 4. Heck thinking about how addictive it was scares me and how badly it wouldve changed my lifestyle if it lasted longer. I remember mashing the controller so hard towards the end when the main Character, Old Snake is crawling towards the computer cluster called G.W.. I also managed to get a chance to play Uncharted and in my experience it was fun being a treaser hunter before the old guy died and you didnt have to kill anyone. After that it was boring. Resistance was boring from the start since it felt like every other shooter. MotorStorm was amazing and I managed to play the sequel demo in 2 player mode and I really enjoyed it. LittleBigPlanet was also alot of fun somehow when I played with my freind since the levels were so smartly designed and your SackPerson and your personal moon could be customised to quite a far extent.

Although I usually always choose the Xbox 360 version of a game over a PS3 version I bought Oblivion for the PS3 which I absolutely loved. This would sound really scary to some but if I bought it for the Xbox 360 the Xbox 360 would have been on for another 112 hours. Knowing defect rates im not sure if Oblivion wouldve broke the Xbox 360 because it certainly didnt do a thing to the PS3 which has been on for so many hours. Damn I love how reliable it is.

  • OMEN

the next xbox will come first, thats a fact, but ps4 will be much easier to develope for and it will be more powerfull, just like sega dream cast-xbox will suffer from it.

  • Steve-0

xbox 360 got a headstart and they did good but now look. ps3 is going to win, blu ray, free online, now many great exclusives

    -littlebigplanet
    -resistance 1+2
    -MGS4
    -Uncharted
the xbox really hasnt a a great new exclusive for a while

gears 2 is basically the same thing, its gets repettitve

fable 2 is ok but gets boring

besides the ps3 will have god of war 2

    parents get the ps3

    besisdes littlebigplanet is incredible

  • Steve-0

my bad god of war 3

that GoW beats the 360s GoW :P

  • FG

Not all games for ps3 will be free online from watching the net . Some game developers have the option to charge a server fee to play their games online through ps3 . even though ps3 itself will not charge they say . Still means some games may charge their own rates .I could care less about either sony or xbox360 but I do find all the games I enjoy are on the xbox .
I tried the ps3 thing was gonna give it a fair shot and so far to date “7″ “DOA” sony ps3′s straight from the box . Last trip was at bestbuy they opened and tested 27 seperate ps3 and found 80% of them would not even come on they had instock on the shelf. So what does this tell me , Sony can not just yelp about MS failure rate when theirs is starting to catch and/or even pass MS.
I hope sony can over come the failures but from my experience already they do not even honor their own warnetys charging me for repair of a brand new ps3 not a week old ontop of charging me to have it sent in for repair . bestbuy went ahead took it back even though they are not supposed to with the “send it in to the man” to be fixed crap .
I wanted to try ps3 I seriously did I hope someday I can still try it , But it will have to be at someone else house not mine . I do not have the Extra $$$ to throw away.
plz over look my typing I spilled tea on my keyboard and have buttons married to each other . I guess i will just stick to my pc until a new console comes out or prices drop down to ragged dirt cheap , till then I can read the forums and watch the ignorant fanboys fight about who’s the most retarded .

  • some dude

I have a 80gig ps3 and an x box 360 elite side by side and although i love them both the ps3 rapes the x box.

  • N.C.

    Fg,

I know you are outrageously over hyping or even lying about that event. The literal fail rate of Playstation’s is no where near the possibility of that many defective units ending up in the same Best Buy. PS3 has a fail rate of around 1%.

  • Harrison Bender

I am an Xbox 360 owner, and I see no need to buy Sony hardware. I bought my first Xbox 360 back in 2007, because I wanted to play this exclusive game called 'Saints Row' (not exclusive anymore). I did have the money to buy a PS3 (was still around €600,- here in the Netherlands), but it didn't have the games I wanted to play, and I still enjoyed my PS2 back in the time, playing The Getaway, GTA: San Andreas and Gran Turismo 4. So I wanted some variation, so I bought my first Xbox 360, back in fall 2007, just before Halo 3 came out.

  • Harrison Bender

Now, I do consider myself a 'fanboy', but there are some things I'd like to say; back when the Xbox 360 was relatively new, it had alot of exclusive games, like Saints Row, Full Auto, PGR, Perfect Dark etc., so I bought an Xbox. But when the PS3 was longer on the market, it began to get exclusive games also, like LittleBigPlanet, MGS4 (not an exclusive anymore), Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, M.A.G., Socom etc., so this might mean that because the Xbox was the console to start the 'next gen', game developers thought the Xbox was superiour, and wanted to make alot of games for it, but when PS3 came on the market, they decided to make the games for both consoles (like Saints Row, Full Auto etc.), and some even went exclusive for Sony (Valve looks like it's abandoning the Xbox, and so does Rockstar).

  • Harrison Bender

And some exclusive developers for the PS3 went to both consoles (like MGS), all I want to say is, the Xbox went old, fast, and the PS3 developed slow, very slow, but now with the Kinect, Microsoft is actually giving the Xbox some fresh air, and with Move, Sony's tries to get the developing of the PS3 even better. In the end it all comes down to this; Microsoft needs to release the new Xbox console early (because the current one is dying fast), or Sony might even get stuck by releasing their new PS4 too late (because they tried to speed up the process of the PS3 some more)

But with the recent happenings to PS3 (PSN hacked, and offline for more than a month) it looks like Sony might loose even more billions up on billions to their PS3 console, and might even abandon the hardware-industry. And with Microsoft testing their new format for the current Xbox (they are going to revise the regular DVD-9 disc's to a Double Layered DVD-18, which holds twice the capacity) is might attracting some developers to push this new format (probably Turn10 will do this with Forza 4).

So, in the end, this industry has it's ups, and downs, and you might never know where it ends, it can be surprising sometimes (Dreamcast, anyone?).
