Apple (AAPL) Earnings Fourth-Quarter

Both analysts and Steve Jobs don’t know how bad a recession could hurt Apple (AAPL), but for the first time in 8 years, Mr. Jobs made a conference call to discuss quarterly results.

Apple’s earnings saw profit at $1.14 billion for the three months that end Sept. 27, this works out to $1.26 per share compared to the same period in 2007 at $1.01 per share or $904 million profit.

This shows a 27 percent increase in Apple’s sales for this quarter, up from $6.22 billion in 2007 to $7.9 billion in 2008. While Analysts expected Apple’s sales to be $8 billion in this quarter, they expected a lower profit at $1.11 per share.

Apple outsold Research in Motion in this quarter with 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs sold compared to 6.1 million BlackBerry smartphones. Apple’s iPod and Mac sales also set quarterly records with 11.1 million iPods sold and 2.6 million Macs.

With Apple’s profit beating Wall Street’s expectations, what does this mean for the year coming in 2009, and can Apple really keep up these good figures with recession well on its way if not here already?
