Google Android Code on G1 T-Mobile Phone Opened Up
By: Daniel Chubb | October 21, 2008 | Leave a CommentIt’s the day before the United States release of the new HTC / T-Mobile G1 phone and just a few days before the UK release, and Google has backed up their promise to make the Android software open source.
From today, anyone can download the code from the Android Open Source Project, which will let developers run and build code needed to operate a cell phone. This means that any software developer can create features for Android based phones and any manufacturer can make phones that run Android OS.
In the past developers could not build features that easy because manufacturers and carriers have controlled the phone market very closely. The Open Handset Alliance is a joint project with the likes of HTC, LG Electronics, Samsung, and Motorola.
It’s crunch time now for the Android software platform and the results over the coming months will show how well it competes with the likes of Apple and their offerings. Will you develop for Android?
