T-Mobile G1 for Google Android Software or Hardware?
By: Peter Chubb | October 20, 2008 | 5 CommentsWith just two days to go until the launch of the T-Mobile G1, the first Google phone to run on the Android OS, we have to wonder what people will be buying the handset for. When Apple first launched the Apple iPhone, you knew that not only were you getting a cell phone with good hardware, but also with good software to match.
As the G1 is the first open source Android phone, many buyers will be rushing out to get their hands on it, but will they want it for its software or its hardware. Early reviews have said that the G1 has great software, but it is the hardware that lets it down. You have to wonder if buyers will rush out to get their hands on the T-Mobile G1, not knowing what they are actually buying.
Since we first learned about the launch of the first Google Android phone, some people will think that the it is more about the Android software. When the iPhone first launched, buyers were not buying the handset for the Mac OS, they knew that the phone was the complete package.
The T-Mobile G1 still looks on paper to be a capable handset, with its 3.1-megapixel camera, that already better than the iPhone. The G1 also has 8GB of memory, 3G, GPS, Bluetooth and a 480 x 320 HVGA display. These features look good, but will it be enough for cell phone users who wants the perfect balance with software and hardware. That is something that is very difficult to do.
